For the past 6 months I have been playing under the 2nd aliases Stellarnebula on FTP and makersmark66 on PokerStars. I have not used the aba20 account on Stars since I began playing on the Makersmark66 account. I have since gone back to using the aba20 account and will play only that account. During this time I played the 25/50 and 100/200 PLO games. I played under the Stellarnebula account from February until the end of June at which time Lee Jones and I had a discussion and we came to an agreement that I needed to close it. During this time I was playing under the Brian Townsend account, never at the same table with the Stellarnebula. Under the Stellarnebula account I played 25/50, 50/100, and 100/200 PLO. During this time I played a very small amount of 50/100 PLO and primarily 200/400 PLO under the Brian Townsend account.
I wanted to have come forward and make this public sooner, but unfortunately because of certain business relationships I could not do that. What I did was wrong and I am going to be punished by FullTilt poker by having my red pro status revoked for 6 months. I am unsure what action, if any, PokerStars will take.
I have also hurt those that I work closely with primarily at CardRunners but also at FullTilt. To compensate those that were hurt by my actions I am going to be donating 25,000 dollars to a charity to be determined in the future. This money will be removed from my CardRunners distributions. This is by no means me making my actions correct but I hope that it shows some good faith towards those that I work closely with. I am very proud of CardRunners; we are doing something very special.
My first reaction when this occurred was to go hide under a rock. I am not going to do that and I will answer any questions that are asked of me. I feel that I have nothing to hide. If you wish to interview me on this subject please email ezra@cardrunners.com and we can set something up. I will also be answering questions in not only the CardRunners forum, but the 2+2 forum as well. I will not be hiding from anyone or any questions.
Those are the pertinent facts. The reason why I created these accounts was because I enjoy anonymity when playing smaller and am very prideful in what I do. The past two years I have made a lot of money playing poker. This year I have been breakeven. For me it’s correct to play smaller when things aren’t going well. I have never played poker for the money; it has always been a byproduct of my play. Whatever I do I want to be the best at it. For me playing the 200/400 PLO games was not the right thing to do because my results haven’t been good. I think I am a winner in those games and I intend to prove to myself that I am one of the best poker players in the world. I believe what it takes is an incredible amount of focus and work to accomplish this goal. I intend to work harder than anyone to prove this, because I have not been playing my best for the past year. I have something to prove to myself.
I have removed what I have online and left myself with 100K. From here I am going to play 25/50 PLO until I have 200K then 50/100 until I have 400K online then 100/200 until I have 800K online. From there I will play 200/400. If things don’t go well when I first move up I will move back down and rinse and repeat until I am at the 200/400 PLO games.
I used to think that playing 25/50, 50/100, and 100/200 was a failure because I wasn’t playing the largest limits. I am smart enough to move down when things aren’t going well; I was just too prideful to make it public.
Along with this I plan on continuing managing CardRunners and create the best poker instructional videos. I have put a lot of effort into my past videos and I want my partners to know that effort will continue, as well as the effort I put into running the company.
I hope that people can look to me and not only learn about poker and bankroll management, but also how to do the right thing and be a good person. Poker isn’t about luck or how you are running. It’s about the work and effort that you put into it. I have not had good results this year because of my poor play and lack of focus, not because I have run below expectation. I want to prove that to everyone. If you follow my play as I move up you will see the trials and tribulations that I face. There will be days of intense frustration and times when I will doubt my game. But I know that with hard work I can accomplish the goal I am setting.
I hope that people can not only look to me for poker education but also for the way to live their lives. I made a mistake and I am willing to take responsibility for it. I am willing to stand up and face the music. I apologize to entire the online community. I will never partake in this type of activity in the future. This post should act as a full admission of my guilt, and I sincerely apologize to anyone that I've wronged.

I understand how CR wouldn't want this to tarnish the sqeaky clean image they try to propagate, and it's obviously against the Full Tilt rules, but you're not alone. Never seemed to bother FT when Patrik had three different accounts prior to becoming a red pro, and I'm sure other red pros do the same.
You did wrong technically (and contractually), but there are plenty of worse things to do in online poker. You are not a God, and I don't think is reasonable for people to expect you to be without foibles.
Build a bridge and move on.

We all mistakes and I think that playing under a diff screenname isnt that much of a bigdeal.
I mean, just because you change name wont make anyone a winner player.
Even if a large number of players know your original screen name, and you play under a diff one, they should be able to adjust there play to your play- Not your screen name.
Get back to playing well brian and do your homework.

This is one of the reasons that I like CR. It's hard to be a poker player online. I want to change my screen name so bad sometimes. There are 100 SnG's that I played as a losing player. There are people who've seen me donk off money and assume I'm bad and play with me because of it. And this is at tiny-tiny stakes. Hell sometimes I want a separate account just so my girl won't know how much \$\$ is in my account on Stars. You live under a microscope. People post Hand Histories about hands you play that they watched. That's insane pressure. The pressure on you to win is enormous, more so when you factor in CR. I understand completely why you did what you did. You're teaching all the people at CR and 2+2 about the importance of integrity in poker. Some already know, some will hate on you anyway, and some (read aisflat439) will appreciate the fact that you man up. That's a bigger a lesson as learning when to float with overs in position.

I think I understand both sides and frankly, I mostly agree with both sides. Because of that, I don't really have an opinion one way or the other on the subject... Nevertheless, I appreciate you on your straightforwardness and honesty with the members here and what sounds like the poker community. Part of being a leader is owning up to the negatives when under your responsibility and I commend you on that.

not that big a deal. patrik had like 3 sns and david benyamine had 2, maybe more. I'm sure it violated your contract with ftp, and that is for them to deal with, but other than that it really isn't a big deal. good of you to own up to what you did brian.

Hey brian, i lack the understanding of why it is unethical for you to play under a different screen name? Anonymity is certainly important - why are you not allowed to? (Ok - if you violate contracts with Full Tilt its another matter...)
Anyways, good luck for you - you are always an inspiration for me!

Months of playing under those names, and you think this makes it right? The only reason this all came to light was because you were exposed on 2+2 - its not like you came clean because of the guilt you fealt - you got caught - and thats why you stopped....and now its damage control time.

Why are people congratulating him? Online poker gets enough heat as it is and Brian Townsend, one of if not the most recognizable faces in the game is disrespecting the rules. Okay so fine he owned up, thats no reason to be proud. I thought at card runners lead pro and a full tilt red name you were supposed to conduct yourself professionally?
I've had a lot of respect for you and I remember reading a post on 2p2 a couple of months ago about samh bitching about Stellarnebula being Brian Townsend and i was like whatever he's Brian Townsend he is not that stupid.
I know this seems harsh but you're the most high profile player on the interwebs so if you can't serve as an example of integrity I'm not happy.

ehrrm, i remember a blogpost a long time a go where brian actually said he was gonna be playing under several different nicks for a time when he was playing his hu challenge i believe. Why didnt anyone react then.
And calling it cheating??? come on, its not like he can see anyones holecards or anything, still the same game except people dunno who he is. And it only takes like 20 minutes of play to understand that ur playing vs a good player anyways.
Kudos for making it very clear what uve done brian, but i think people overreact a bit. Im guessing a ton of players have done the same thing before

We all make mistakes. Some, several of which have commented to this blog, act as though they have not and would rather spew venom at others than consider their issues. People like you, whatever the catalyst, are willing to accept responsibility and apologize. I applaud you and am proud to say that I work for a company fronted by Brian Townsend.

This falls in a very grey area.
How about 1 person playing and other(s) helping in the background? during tourneys and/or cash games. This is cheating!! playing under diff. accnt names is not a big deal. In high stakes games I don't think it takes long for others to find out if they are playing a good player or not. It is not like Brian has is own unique style that people can't play against if they don't know its him.
To me it is an ethical issue. Lee and Brian have discussed it and think it is unethical. While many others think it is ok to play under diff. accounts, have other people help while playing.
While the many online poker issues continue, I DO NOT think this is cheating.
BTW - I think BT is down for the year anyway? so he was using diff names and loosing, I don't see the advantage

you get HANDED a gig where you get 100% RB, and \$35 an hour on full tilt - and, become a representative of a company. You know how many people would kill for that deal? In return, you expressly breach your contract, misrepresent yourself, and make a mockery out of full tilt. I'm sure Howard would be proud.

I respect your decision to come clean without a doubt. Reading some of the posts on 2+2 I just shrugged it off because like others have said, playing at higher limits most players are competent enough to read a player and play accordingly. Thanks for bringing some class into this situation.
As far as the donations, I HIGHLY recommend a donation to the ASPCA foundation under the name of CardRunners.com, not just under Brian Townsend. That way, some better light comes to poker players as well as giving some (who almost demand it) some dignity back regarding the situation.
Good luck with your challenge!

What suprises me is how everyone says "everyone else does it so ...." You broke the rules and you got caught. And your apology timing does seem a lot like damage control. You may be sincere but I'll always wonder.
drainer
Aug 27, 08 20:17:39
Why does timing matter so long as he is sincere? He's a human being just like all of us, micro limit to obnoxiously high limit players, he will make mistakes in life like all of us.
I look up to Brian, Taylor, Cole, and all the guys at C.R., but at the end of the day they're just a regular dude good at something. (no offense) And that means they will from time to time, fuck up.

You admitting your mistakes is noble but after reading other pros doing this sort of thing and getting busted while probably feeling it was wrong a simple apology isn't going to clear your name in the poker world.
For me you are a solid player and I've learned a lot from you. I forgive you eventually but obviously some will hold this against you for a long time. You might walk into a casino or whatever and other pros perhaps even FTP red's will either think or say "Their is Brian Townsend the multi accounting cheat". It just really depends on how they feel as your certainly not the only one in "red" whose multi accounted.
A donation is great but obviously whether it was \$5K, \$25K, or \$250K that certainly won't buy respect back from some people in the poker world.

Aug 28, 08 05:28:49
Glad you came clean about this.
What I don't understand are the following:
1 - To compensate those you played against woulden't it be better to refund any money the lost to you while you deceived them by playing on your other accounts? I don't see how donating money to charity compensated those you deceived. If you won 200K and donate 25K how does that help those you deceived?
2 - How come the poker sites didn't find this sooner? They must know from your IP address what you are doing right? Or do you use different ISP's and computers for each account?
Anyway, glad you came forward and I hope you feel better about everything.
All the best,

Aug 28, 08 08:14:12
its more than likely a big deal to the high stakes HU players you played since a history and knowledge of who you are playing (when they are clueless) is such an advantage.
Pretty unfair but we all make mistakes.
It would have been better if you were like: "hey i lost a load of money and have to drop down and build back up, so im making a cardrunners video series about it."
-kinda like something andrew was suggesting.
Than would gain huge interest as every player has done something similar before. I guess you can still do it but it doesnt have the same quality to it. Gl and welcome back !! and nice gesture with the charity donation.

We all humans and we all make mistakes.
Admiting and correcting mistakes is what separates losers from winners.
I wonder would you admit and correct those if you werent spootlighted and you wouldnt be tied to CR and FTP as a public face. Probably not, because many uses multiple accounts and dont even think about it.
One way or another - the action you took is brave and correct one as you set one of rare precedents and show example. I salute you for this.

Aug 28, 08 09:28:47
The thing about online poker is that there is usually so much that is unknown about a player. In Brian's case, everyone knows his style and he probably couldn't get good action. People say he deceived others, but isn't that what poker is? I don't see how it should be considered cheating at all. Unethical, possibly, but I can see both sides to that argument. He was definetly wrong in breaching his contract with FTP and he will pay the price for it. Unfortunately this can only have a negative impact on online poker being legalized in the US, because everyone is deciding all of a sudden this is a big deal and it will be seen as such by congress. Good luck to you Brian and I'm glad you came forward and addressed the situation, even if you didn't have a choice you were a class act about it.

For those of us who grind it out in the poker world trying to move up using such tools as Cardrunners this truly dishonors us. This makes a mockery of cardrunners and those that believed the new breed of pro's truly earned their way to the top. Having multiple accounts increases the odds of collusion by 90%. You all built your rolls on PartyPoker, and now it has to be in question as to whether the rise to the top was legit. I now unquestionably have doubts.
This has nothing to do with the opinion of style or videos. This has to do with integrity. I employ over 20 journalists and our integrity is the MOST valuable asset that we have.
Only you know the real story and either way you have to deal with the truth on your own terms.
I only hope you have learned something positive.

People seem to think what you did is not a big deal - and now you've made it seem even more acceptable. The next time someone gets caught they'll say "well aba did it too, its really not cheating its just a stupid rule." - Could you atleast clear up the fact that it is blatent cheating that should not be condoned and that you DID GAIN A HUGE ADVANTAGE against the people you played. People seem to think this is a gray area - So much for class of the industry. If you're one of the guys cheating up there then I'm sure everyone is - and that makes me not want to play highstakes online - so why the hell am i paying cardrunners then?

I am greatly dissapointed! You were the one I was looking up to, when starting in poker, and a great reason for joining CR!!
But, allright, everyone deserves a chance, and I suppose this is yours! -Beware thou, I dont think you can afford to dissapoint your fans further

I applaud you for your honesty. This really isn't that big of a deal. It seems to be your entitled to some privacy when you play every once in a while if you want it. Your dedication to this site and your videos is a testament to your professionalism and character. I have lost no faith in you.

wow, just wow.
Why do people get so bent out of shape about something like that?
I really don't see this as cheating. Sure you broke the site's rules and they will deal with it as they'll see fit, but its not like you did anything immoral and its not like by playing under a different name you got a bigger edge on your opponents.
People should really relax a little and don't take everything so damn serious.

Brian, you should donate the 25k to the Poker Players Alliance (PPA). It gives back to the community and it's for a good cause, IMO.

You have always come across as being a good guy in your videos.

I see CR's punishment was putting a pic of you (the CR Dashboard one) up which you're most clearly doing your best Down Syndrome impersonation. That's rough, fitting though.
You had a contractual obligation with both FTP and CR that most players/pros would kill for and broke both agreements. That was just plain stupid and selfish. I'm actually surprised FTP will be giving your red pro status back. I would have been expecting a 6 month COMPLETE ban, then back to sbrugby. But whatever, I'm glad they didn't cuz I'm still a supporter and wish ya the best. I've done dumber things and am just fortunate enough that no one really cares.

I'm still a fan. I think you're cool, but....
Why would you give up \$35/hour and 100% rakeback? You're going to sacrifice this kind of \$\$ just so people won't talk about you playing 25/50? Since when is 25/50 the kiddie pool? You gave up earning money so some forum tards wouldn't lose respect for you? That doesn't make sense. Do you think any of your peers who actually play in the bigger games are going to make disparaging comments about you? Even if they did, why would you care? They don't pay your mortgage. You forgot that the reason you play poker is for \$\$\$\$\$\$\$\$\$.
On to your apology. Do you really think what you did was "wrong and inexcusable"? I mean , c'mon, its not like you did it for one night and then stopped doing it. You made a repeated conscious choice. Other's have done it, its not against the rules on other sites..
I think your videos and posts on here rule.

its hilarious to me that players dont think this is cheating. "you dont get any greater edge doing this" or "its against the sites rules but its not cheating" kind of things makes me laugh out loud. Clearly anything against any sites rules IS cheating, and clearly the use of previous reads on players while those players have no read/stats on you is a huge advantage.
I lost a lot of respect for you Brian. I like you, and looked up to you, but I'm not going to turn the other cheek when you or any other big name is caught cheating.

Brian, can you make an article or blog about ego management? I think this falls within the same area as bankroll management. A lot of us can't quit when we are losing, and it is our ego that gets the better of us. This happened to you here, you didn't want to lose your status as a high limit player or looked down upon because you moved down in limits.
I didn't lose respect for you because what you did I don't think was that bad, but can you maybe educate people on how to let their ego not get in the way of their better judgment.

Thanks Brian for clearing up your mistake and putting all of the rumors to rest. Everyone makes mistakes and I think it's a great step that at least you're showing some good faith by making that donation to charity. We all love you BT and you dropping down in limits only shows your true character and ability to do what's right and remain a power of example to us all and to reamin a beacon of hope that maybe we too can someday play in the big games. Don't ever let false pride get in the way or compromise your character, reputation, and more importantly, tarnish the feelings of your faithful students and followers. That, to me, is the most powerful lesson to be learned here and is something no amount of money could ever buy. Loyalty and integrity. Thanks again BT! Hang in there! You should know that we don't care what stakes you're playing, as long as we can count on you. Peace and love bro! DMIP aka Skillish
