So i haven't updated my blog in a month and a lot has happened since then so I will break the last month up into multiple entries.  The first entry will be my poker in the last month or 2.

While I was out in hawaii I put in a ton of hours, mostly into tournaments.  They didnt really go so hot all month and the only result I had of any note was getting 34th in the wcoop main event for around 21k.  Despite not really doing all that well in mtts last month I feel like I learned a ton about them and plan on working more on testing out what I learned during ftops coming up next month.

On the side, I made sure to constantly be playing some cash.  I played a decent amount of o8, lhe, razz, and nl cash.  Between o8 and razz i probably won somewhere between 500 and 1000 dollars, basically broke even in LHE and have been doing ok in nl cash, but not in full ring.  Here are my stats for the past couple months in holdem:

As you guys can see, besides 6max NL i havent really been doing that well.  The past few days I spent a lot of time looking at hands i played in full ring and worked out most of my kinks and am going to put in a bunch of hours to getting my A game back.  LHE I put a decent amount of time into but dont really feel like spending more time getting better at the game.  I'll put that on indefinite hold and will just continue to play NL for the time being.  And my 6max game feels really good.  Im reacting to the regulars really well and definitely running pretty good there too.

Also I want to mention that I just turned in a video to cardrunners.  I really think it's the best one i've made and think you guys will get a lot out of it.  In the video, i 12 tabled full ring on ftp and paused in a lot of spots to explain what was going on.  I had never done a video like that before and it really allowed me to give better reasoning and explanations in most of the tricky situations than I had been able to in the past.  I really hope you guys enjoy it a lot.

Basically, I called pre cause im in position hu and we're 200bb deep.  I raised the flop cause it's extremely likely I have the best hand and i want to get a bit more money in. 

I decided to check behind on the turn for a few reasons.  While it is HU and I can often get 3 streets of value from Qx in this spot, it still is a full ring table and the regulars have a tighter mindset than 6max or hu players do.  Therefore, while I would sometimes get him to call down 3 streets with worse, I decided to check behind because I thought he would often fold worse and to pot control a little bit cause its possible he turned a better hand.

When he checked the river I thought it would be criminal to check behind so I bet about 70% pot.  Immediately after I bet I had this feeling that he would c/r the river so I was not surprised when he did.  After he did it, I thought to myself that I have to shove for a few reasons.  While it's semi likely he has total air or is turning a 1 pair hand into a bluff (arguing for a call), i think it's very possible he has a set, a straight or maybeeeee 2 pair.  Now, if I 3bet all in, yes he's getting very good odds, but how often am i really going to show up with less than an 8 high flush when I do?  It's definitely believable that i could have 8xss, Qxss, T9ss, or other flushes that bluff raised the flop and managed to backdoor a hand.  I think he has to fold all of these valuebet hands (his sets, straights, 2p).

Finally, it's certainly possible that he backdoored a flush with either 65ss, T9ss, Qxss or some random other hand.  Now, I think its possible he folds 65ss in this spot because it essentially has the same amount of value as T9 does because I wouldnt 3ball shove T9 (unless I was getting really sassy and decided to bluff out a chop).  I think he definitely calls with any Qxss hand and almost certainly calls with T9ss as well.  However, I think i am getting better hands to fold more often than he ends up calling me with better so i expect to show a nice profit by making this play.

Anyway, ill post a couple more entries towards the end of this week about how backing and my life in general have been going.  take it easy guys.

So we arrived last night in hawaii after a pretty long flight.  There were some problems on the way.  First, Mike getting stuck in the Honolulu airport and missed the flight to Lihue because his ticket didnt have a specified seat for the 40 minute island to island flight.  The airport people ran a search on his name, and for whatever reason it was flagged so he had to get a security clearance from the airport before he could go. By the time he was cleared the flight had already taken off and he had to sit there another 2 hours for the next flight to Lihue.  what a joke.

After that, we had some serious problems renting a car.  We finally managed to get one, its basically the scooby doo van which is awesome.  Ill get some pictures of it later.  After all that we finally got out to the house at around 11 at night and dicked around a few hours before going to bed.

The breakfast Chad and Dani made us this morning.  Dani is bushmans sister and chad is her boyfriend.  the guy on the right is roman's brother Ilya.  The bowl is grapes on top of cut up papaya which was awesome.  the grapes were so small  you just put the whole vine in your mouth and rip out all the grapes with your teeth.  the smoothie was pineapple juice, blackberries, blueberries, and mango which was awesome.

We have some fruit growing in our backyard.  we found coconuts on some trees, which we still have yet to be able to knock down, bananas from donkey kong growing at the top of a tree, with something that looks like a dragons penis coming out of them, and these weird lime/lemon/orange type fruits. 

Basically, we found a lime tree, picked one of the limes off, cut it open and it was orange inside and tasted a lot like a tangerine.

After that we went back found some really big ones, picked that, cut it open, it was much lighter, bit into it and it tasted like a lemon.  wtf is going on?  oh well, i guess we have a new hybrid weirdo fruit that starts out looking like a lime and tasting like a tangerine, then starts looking like a green tangerine and tastes like a lemon.  who knows whats going on with it.

i spent a few hours trying to knock the bananas out of this tree.  they were up high so i couldnt reach them, so mer suggested i use the pool skimmer to try to get them down.  i took it and was basically beating the shit out of the bananas but they wouldnt come down,  oh well i will get you bastards down one of these days and you are going to be delicious.  mer will probably have some idea up her sleeve for me to get them down, i hope its better than what i have because i really want those fucking bananas even though they dont look the least bit ripe.

The coconuts we found next door and we are having a hard time getting them down to eat/drink as well.  They arent totally ripe so there wont be milk inside, but chad, who knows way too much random information, says that the water inside non ripe coconuts is really high in nutrients and we should try to get them anyway.  these guys were a bit too high up for mer's skimmer idea, so i took a water bottle and continually chucked it at the coconuts cause the tree was hard to climb.  i had a few direct hits but the coconuts refused to budge.  id have given it a better effort and tried to climb the tree but they are on the next door neighbors property and i dont really know coconut ettiquette that well.

Chad, Dani, Ozzy, Roman, Ilya and I went for a bit of a tour of the island.  we found a nice little beach about 15 miles away in a town called Koloah and messed around for a bit there. 

there was an island about 200 feet away, so i decided i was going to swim over to it.  I totally fucked my feet up cause i didnt realize the ocean was all rocks and i just ran in like an idiot and tried to start running through the shallower water only to obliterate my feet on the rocks.  If you look closely you can see them in the picture.

I walked around the beach until i found a place where there was more sand and less rock and walked through that until the water got a ilttle deeper then i swam a bit of a ways towards the island.  when i turned around and headed back i noticed there was a seal laying on the beach and i thought it was dead :(

But then i saw a glimmer of hope!  His fins were flapping around and i realized he was alive.  Apparently it was a monk seal which is a very endangered species with only 1100 left in the whole world.  They like to swim up on the beach during the day to cool their bodies off by putting their heads in the sand.  Chad, the king of random knowledge, told us that they had a lot of blood vessels in their face so the seals bury their heads in the sand to cool themselves off during the day, then swim out to sea at night to eat.

So i finished up bjj for the month.  Since I am going to hawaii and i do month by month memberships at my place i wont be going back to my new jersey place til after i get back in late september.  I talked to the instructors and they knew a few places over in hawaii.  I am going to check out this place called Longman which I believe is on the island of Kauai in Linue Hawaii.  The head black belt at my place david adiv says he is good friends with the guy Bruno who runs longman so i am excited to check it out, especially since hawaiians are so obsessed with MMA and especially BJJ because of bj penn being so good at it.

Poker has been going pretty bleh.  Im up something like 6500 in cash games the past 3 weeks over way too many hands to be up that little.  its frustrating to be playing small stakes and doing marginally well, especially since im down in tourneys and probably effectively even on that stretch of time. 

ive started playing some fixed limit cash because its good for rakeback and its always been my weakest game when i play horse.  ive been grinding some 5/10 8/16 and 10/20 on ftp and the games are alright and i feel like im learning a lot.  ive watched a few scneids videos and they seem to have helped cement the stuff i was unsure about.  its a pretty logical game and i feel like the way i naturally play and think about poker is good in fixed limit because it has a lot to do with matching your hand against someones range with the given odds.  id like to eventually be able to move up and play 15/30 and possibly 30/60 when games are good because i think a lot of money can be made there.  it also has a positive effect of improving tilt control because if you dont tilt in limit hold em you are not going to tilt anywhere.

Also wanted to talk about a video series i am making.  I did a little question and answer session with lee jones about mass tabling full ring and im first going to play roughly 12 tables using cascade on ftp.  ill probably just play it out and then do the audio afterwards, pausing at times to explain stuff in more detail, sort of like coles 300/600 hu video which i really liked.  after that ill tone it down to 4-6 tables and either cascade or tile and explain stuff in more detail about full ring.  i havent put out a good full ring video in a long time so lee and i thought this would be a good way to get that done.


after that im thinking either a normal 2 table full ring video at higher stakes to emphasize concepts more than the mass tabling videos do and also to get some hands in against better players that you can try more things against, or a video of your guys choice.  i can either do a horse video, an mtt vid, a 6max cash video, a plo video or possibly a triple draw video.  if i had to rank my games in order of what im best at id probably say nl then plo then triple draw before the horse games, so im pretty sure i could make a good video for you guys in that.  just let me know what you guys are interested in seeing in the next few months.

Poker hasnt been going so great. Ive put in a ton of hours this month and have no results at all. Im probably down slightly in the online mtts ive played which is no great surprise and is not the least bit upsetting considering the variance, but cash has been pretty frustrating. I've played 30k hands this month of 2/4 and am basically even within a buyin either way. It's definitely the longest breakeven stretch ive had buyin wise in a long long time. Ive had bigger break even stretches money wise but usually that happens when i lose at 25/50+ and win it back at 10/20 and lower. It's ok because of the rakeback i am up about 15-20 buyins on the month which is nice, but definitely going to put in some work and figure out whats going wrong with my game. I've gone through a lot of hands and have made some mistakes but not an overwhelming number of them so i assume im running under expectation and not playing my best. Basically put him on AAh or KKh and thought with K hitting that it looked like he wouldnt fold so i shoved thinking he would think i put him on top set. either way love how he played it and just shat on my soul.

Anyway I feel good about it and im confident ill put in a good month and finish out strong. It's nice playing 2/4 cause i can play a lot of tables, never feel stressed and can get creative sometimes and try stuff out on some pretty good regulars. I dont have a lot online right now because i added a couple new horses and shipped out a lot of money in the past 3 weeks, so i only have like 40-50k online spread between a lot of sites which in my opinion is almost a good thing because it forces me to really put in a lot of hours and grind.

I spent the last weekend up at thorladens house with him and Roman. it was great and felt like i got a lot out of the weekend even though we didnt put up any results. we had some close calls like roman getting final 3 tables in the ftops 2500 and some deep finishes in the big rebuys. Those guys had a great week/weekend in cash and i stunk it up but its ok i got a lot out of watching them play the 10/20 25/50 and 100/200 games on stars and feel like my A game is coming back into form. I really like grinding up at thors house except for Archie the cat puking on my backpack and either of his dogs Luther or Zeke waking me up every morning with a nose in my face.

BJJ is going pretty well. I have been going 2 or 3 times a week to my new place. I have been trying to go to the 2 beginner classes each week and an advanced class every other week. The beginner classes focus on technique and position while the advanced classes work more on some submissions and rolling. I feel confident rolling with most people but i just have the worst endurance of all time.

Last advanced class i took i rolled with this kid chris who i am a better athlete than but he has been doing it for about a year to 18 months so he has a bunch more experience. anyway i passed his guard in about 35-40 seconds, got into mount and realized i didnt know many subs from up top. i didnt want to give up the position and go for an armbar or anything so i kept futily trying to go for a keylock (pictured below) and trying to take his back whenever he turned to try and escape.

we were up against the wall and we stopped and restarted and by this point i was pretty winded so we started rolling again, but this time i had him in my guard. i threw a triangle (pictured below as well) pretty fast but i couldnt close it because of my lack of flexibility so i just kept trying to bend my legs into the right position to land it but just winded myself even faster. eventually i was just panting and tired and he passed my guard and keylocked me cause i was so exhausted lol. i assume my endurance will improve pretty quickly as i roll more and more.
