CARDRUNNERS

What's Your Edge

PEACHY KEEN!!
February 07, 2010

Today as I was walking from my car to the gym, some dude tried to mug me.  It went like this--
(dude walks up to me)
dude: give me your money.
me: what?
dude: give me your money n*****
me: are you serious?

At this point I seriously still think he is joking, because he has no knife or gun and although we were in an unlit part of the street, it was still quite a busy street with lots of car and foot traffic.  Turns out he was serious, because right after I asked he punched me right in the eye.  I turned around and since I was walking off the sidewalk towards the middle of the street the entire time, I'm in the middle of the street and he didn't pursue me any further.  Afterwards I called the cops and drove around for a bit, filed a report, but didn't do much else about it when we couldn't find him.  I guess the lesson here is...if you want to rob someone do it right.  Don't try to rob people with your fist on a busy street.

The cops called an ambulance over to give me a checkup, but since I felt OK and none of my injuries seemed too serious I decided to go to the gym.

Fastfoward 2 hours...

I'm leaving the gym, which is on the 2nd story of a two story shopping complex with an attached parking garage.  I walk outside, and as I'm standing on the top floor of the garage I hear lots of screaming, yelling, and then...GUNSHOTS.  All of a sudden I'm thinking...how did I decide to come to this gym!  To be perfectly honest I had no idea it was even a bad neighborhood because the buildings look nice and new, but I suppose the reason for that is they tore down the terrible looking old ones.  What a TARP.
Anyways, right after the gunshots I start panicking, because I had never actually been in a situation like this before, but for the time being I felt safe on the 2nd story of the parking complex. As soon as I thought this though, I hear police sirens coming in from all different directions.  I decide to walk over to all the commotion and see what was going on, so I go to the edge of the parking garage along with 2 other guys.  I see...people streaming out of 2 clubs, lots of yelling, cop cars blocking off the entire block, firetrucks coming in, and most importantly--one guy on the ground in handcuffs and another guy on the ground not in handcuffs, not moving, and laying in a pool of blood.  I could only assume he was dead.
At this point I did what any sensible person would do, so I immediately whipped out my iPhone and started video recording what was in front of me.  I was trying to get the 2 guys on the ground, when all of a sudden I saw a cop with an m16 in his hand.  I'm not sure if you are familliar with guns, but an m16 is an assault rifle used in the Vietnam war that packs quite a punch.  This thing is NO JOKE, and I didn't even know police were allowed to carry it.  When I saw this cop I decided that pointing a black object at an alert officer with an m16 from an elevated angle in the dark was probably a bad idea, so I put my phone away, continued to watch the mayhem for a while, then drove home.

Word to the wise--if you are ever in San Francisco at night, I would avoid the area near Bay St and Powell St near the Northpoint Shopping Center.  It's not the tenderloin, but its not exactly safe.

The Tenderloin is considered the unsafest part of town. San Fran is crazy how one street can be so nice and literally one block off there will be cameras bc it's so dangerous..

why?

why are you going to gyms in the tenderloin!? you got enough money go somewhere else!

In the last few days I've been running quite well, winning a ton of flips and hitting a lot of draws when I've semibluffed.  However, I'm not playing up to par at ALL and I'm not sure what it is.  I think the 5k hands/day schedule is really getting to me, because I'll formulate reads on players and then act the exact opposite of what I should do.  This has especially been happening tonight and yesterday night.  Normally I would just quit the session when I'm playing like this, but there were so many fish playing that I talked myself into staying.  This turned out to be the wrong choice as I made one bad play after another vs the regs and still ended up even most of the time due to suckouts and winning flips.  I think I'm going to lighten my play load a little, and see how that goes.

On the up side, I've been going to the gym every day, and I'm really starting to feel a difference.  It's amazing how your body craves exercise when you are consistently doing it, yet it rejects exercise so very hard when you are doing nothing.  I hope to keep it up, and the upcoming weeks of travel will definitely test my resolve.  Hopefully I'll still be able to keep this rigorous workout schedule :).

Feb 6, 10 04:17:52

Keep it up. I'm a chubby guy as well and have cut soda out of my diet completely and started working out more and its made an immense difference on how I feel.

So since my last downswing I've been making a lot of changes.  I realized I was tilting a lot and tilting very quickly, which was a result of my lifestyle of constant traveling and shifting timezones, too much drinking and partying, and not enough exercise.  Since mid January I've been working out every day and grinding the crap out of 5/10.  It's been going pretty well so far, as I've consistently made about 3k a day whenever I play.
I had a chat with one of my horses about all the factors affecting play, and it reminds me of all the things I thought I'd always be wary of: a healthy diet, lots of exercise, and getting enough sleep.  I definitely haven't been doing these things and its interesting  how I can look at someone else who reminds me of how I was a few years ago and how much I've changed.  I suppose the money and vegas lifestyle is addicting, and its something I have to watch out for in the future.  For the time being, I'm really happy with what I am doing now and will continue to do so.
Another cool thing I am doing--I've been watching a documentary called "Life" narrated by David Attenborough.  For those of you who don't know, David Attenborough is a naturalist who has a plethora of knowledge regarding nature and has narrated many documentaries for decades.  If you've seen the popular "Planet Earth" series and enjoyed it, I highly highly recommend this series, as I feel "Life" supersedes the quality and rarity of what you see.
Wish me luck at the tables! :)

Feb 3, 10 08:57:04

Glad to hear about the lifestyle adjustments Eric, it really does make a huge difference in one's play, imo. Keep up the good work!

I was meaning to make part 2 of my video a few weeks ago, but a deathrun has sucked all the energy out of me.   Since I don't really use Pokertracker and there are way too many stupid hands to count, I'll just let PTR do the talking:

Well at least I'm not running at 0 hotness.  Downswing is 100k and counting....

So on the first day of the month I lost 40k playing 25/50 PLO with antes and 25/50 NL HU.  Most of the hands were standard I think with me perhaps spewing a bit by playing a little too loose pf in PLO, although I probably only spewed off 5k or so in equity.  Coupled with the fact that I had lost 40k in the last 2 days of November means that I'm starting the new month -80k.  Well, I have a lot of recovery work to do!  Playing high variance games to start out the new month will do that I suppose.  I wish I could get some sick volume in this month as I did last month, but I'm not sure that's going to be possible with my packed schedule for December.  I'm going to try and get a lot of live hands in as well, and intended to play the bellagio cup tournament.  Wish me luck!

November 29, 2009
Well, November has ended and it has been a good month.  I told myself I'd stick to 5/10 but that only went so far, as good spots at 10/20+ kept popping up again and again.  I ended up running well towards the latter half of the month, not playing very many hands but always keeping an eye out for good games.  I ended the month +165k, which is the best month I've had for the 2nd half of 2009.  This will motivate me to grind a lot more and put in a lot more hours, as I realize now over the last year I have really not been playing enough volume to show any significant results, and instead have been focusing on too many other things.  Speaking of which...

I invested in a bar in Cambridge, MA that was supposed to have opened ages ago, but because of needed renovations and problems with the city it has JUST opened.  The bar is called "Lord Hobo" and I am very psyched about its future prospects as the first week looks great so far.  If any of you are in the Boston area I suggest you try it out!

Last but not least, I leave you with a traditional p3achy_keen bad beat hand:

After running good this month for the first 20k hands, I decided to take a few "shots" at 10/20 PLO w/ antes and 25/50 NL.  I ran good towards the beginning half and was up to +110k on the month, but I decided that it would still be a good idea to finish off my 100k hand goal.  Unfortunately, I started running bad and then proceeded to lose 85k in the next week at combined 10/20 and 25/50 NL and PLO w/ antes.  This is obviously very frustrating as it means I will again have to move down to 5/10 to complete my goal.  I am at nearly 50k hands on the month, and intend to finish the month playing 100k hands at 5/10.  No more taking "shots" until next month!

UPDATE ON MY LAST SIX MONTHS

I’ve been doing a lot of traveling these past few months and I haven’t had time to update my blog or make many videos.  So, I’m sorry to all the fans for the delay, but I’m back online with new news.  I broke even this summer for WSOP.  I bricked all the tournaments but two of my horses, Jonny McGowan and Steve Levy had some good final table scores.  I also played in the European Cash game again this season.  For the majority of the European cash game, I played really well but made two thin plays against Andy Black and failed.  I ended up down 17K Euros at 50/100 so it wasn't too bad.  For more information on the European Cash game, check out this link:

http://www.pokerchanneleurope.com/ecg/.

After my disappointing experience at the European Cash game, I flew home for a week then back to London again for WSOPE.  I finished 10th running QQ into Jason Mercier's KJcc while short.  Flop came down AcK10c so I couldn't even get a sweat lol.  A lot of ppl give Jason shit for running good, but I'm glad I busted to him because I think he was by far the best player left. While I was there, me and my horse Evan and a bunch of liquidpoker guys MezmerizePLZ, Fazi, Twistedecho and the Hansen brothers stopped by Jalouse, which is one of London’s hottest nightclubs.  We ordered two 2 foot tall bottles of Belvedere and had a sick time...I ended up diving off the elevated dance floor and smashing my head, but that didn't stop me.  Needless to say, it was a good night.

I then went to NYC and had the most expensive meal I've ever had at Masa for a $1.5k dinner for two.  While I am aware that this might be a bit pricey for miniature slabs of raw fish, it was insanely delicious and worth every dollar.  Chef Masa is a culinary genius and a genuinely nice guy; he explained everything we were eating and where the fish came from.  I highly recommend Masa to anyone who loves sushi.

Right now, since I've had a recent small downswing and my horses are not doing so hot this year, I've decided to multitable 5/10 for the month.  My goal is to play 100k hands and make $100k.  So far I've played about 20k hands and made $75k, so I'm a pretty much on track in terms of number of hands.  I'm excited to see how much I can profit at 5/10 and hopefully it will be a boost for my confidence.

I know it has been a while since my last blog, but I will definitely be updating a ton more from now on.

I busted the $40k buyin NL event on day 1!  I started the day not really going anywhere with a lot of tough players at my table (which was expected) with my image not being so great as I've shown down a few bluffs and mucked all my good hands when they weren't called.  Because of this and the fact I wasn't getting any hands I was folding a ton when my bustout hand occurred, which went like this:
Mark Seif limped UTG+1 at 500/1k and was playing a little more solidly before having shown down some nonsense bluff w/ K10 high no draw 3 barrel on 34824, so needless to say I isolated him w/ 69dd as hes never ever limp/reraising me here.  Someone behind me called and one of the blinds call and Mark Seif folds...just kidding he calls!  Flop comes 3710r with 1 diamond and it checks around, turn is an 8 (bink!).  It checks to me and I bet 12,550 which was near pot, a bet which Mark check-raises to 34,000.  Well, since he's never bluffing here I just decided to shove allin for 110k effective stacks and get instasnapped off by 88.  River...8.  GG!

In other news, I've been playing a lot of $25/50 and recently $50/100 at the bellagio with pretty good results.  Just yesterday I played a very interesting hand at $50/100 vs some crazy guy named Bill where I made a pretty sick call but lost anyways :(.  Here's how it went:
Bill is stuck and has been playing nearly every hand and trying to barrel people off hands on multiple streets.  He limps UTG and gets 2 more callers.  I have 910dd in the bb and I check.  Flop is Ad4d4s.  I check, Bill bets $500, a very solid guy named Ben calls behind, I call.  Turn is the 7d giving me a flush, I check, Bill bets $1400, Ben looks at his hand for a bit, shakes his head, and angrily folds.  I call planning to check/call most rivers.  River is an Ac.  I check and Bill bets $10,000!  Well, the board double pairing really sucked, but the fact that he bet 3x pot on the river means he never has a bare 4.  Also, due to the fact that it was very clear that Ben folded an ace and Bill and I had talked about overbetting before when I snapped off a smaller bet vs him earlier, I called w/ my 10 high flush.  As soon as I called, he says to me, "you're good" and moves to muck his hand.  I flip over 910dd proudly and he goes...oh OH...and flips over J8dd.  DAMMIT!  I would've never thought in a million years he'd turn a flush into a bluff there!!  That's ok though, I'm still playing great and I like my call.  I'm looking forward to the rest of the series and I'll keep you guys as updated as I can!
