I played Peter Eastgate today HU on Stars.  There was a hand that I forgot to save where I 4bet him w/ AKhh and he called OOP, flop came Q84.  It went check/check and turn was a 7 bringing 2 spades and he overbet shoved AI.  Well, I had previously seen him do this with draws and made the call w/ AK high, binking a K on the turn and winning against A8o.  2 things went through my mind when this happened:
1. Wow I ran good!  Sucked out!
2. Wow he called a 4bet OOP with A8o!  I need to keep playing!

He leaves but soon after calls me back to play, this time at $100/200, where he proceeds to run really good vs me (he played quite well too) and take the rest of my stars roll with some retarded coolers that played themselves:
http://www.liquidpoker.net/h/600638 --I was cheering here!  Crap.
http://www.liquidpoker.net/h/600642 --I was cheering here too!
The rest of the hands were just me making good thin valuebets and him rivering me or me making good thin calls and him rivering me.  It was really irritating, and I lost about $100k total

Then I decide to take pieces of MezmerizePLZ at $200/400 who ran QQ into durrrr's AA (didn't save the hand b/c it was too standard) and Boosted J who ran into this:
http://www.pokerhand.org/?3666675

So, I'm pretty broke online now losing about $140k total today with about...well nearly nothing left!  Gonna grind $5/10 for a few months, worry free and variance free.  SEE YOU GUYS AT THE TABLESSSSSSSSSS

Thats so sick man. I've always had a ton of respect for you and love watching your videos.

I think moving down and just grinding some "free" money from some player is going to be great for your confidence. Good luck man and hopefully you can get out of the hole soon.

December 30, 2008

As some of you know and as most of you have experienced yourself, when one goes on a huge downswing one does not want to do ANYTHING.  ANYTHING!  For the longest time I was grinding and grinding, losing and losing, and being depressed and doing more grinding and losing.  In addition to all the traveling, this took a noticeable toll on my health and, after talking to a few friends, I took the longest break I've taken in 2 years.  I feel a lot better now, but a lot (I MEAN A LOT) has happened since my last update.

When I last left you guys, I was in NYC, and had a fantastic time there watching 2 Duke Basketball games where we convincingly won the tournament held at Madison Square Garden that we play in every year before Thanksgiving (the name escapes me at the moment...).  I thought our team was going to be pretty crappy once again as a transitional force, but those games led me to believe otherwise!  I hope Coach K takes us far this year as we've sorta been on a slump recently.  After this I went down to Maryland to have a delicious Thanksgiving meal with my family and flew back to San Francisco.

A day later, Cardrunners had a get-together in Ft. Lauderdale which I certainly could not miss, so I flew across the country yet again to Florida.  There, the guys had some fun times hanging out in bars and playing beach volleyball, which I had none of because I was busy in my little hole grinding and grinding, losing and losing :(.  On the last day, we rented a stretch hummer limo (so much for gas efficiency) and went to a sick restaraunt and club in Miami.  That city always amazes me as it seems EVERY chick there is super hot, a feat I thought was only achievable at Vegas stripclubs during peak hours.  Anyways, after dinner (which was a pretty good asian fusion place) the guys went out to a club and Ryan Daut and I decided to head back and grind (ON THE GRIND, ALWAYS!).  A few hours later, Brian Townsend, who decided to stay behind as well, was having a pretty cool Stacraft discussion with Ryan and I.  In comes Taylor Caby and Ezra, both presumably very drunk.  Taylor proceeds to start yelling and screeching about a mouse in the kitchen jumping around, which is the first time I've ever heard of a jumping mouse.  Ezra is cracking up every 2 minutes for no reason except for the fact that jumping mice are scary for some and hilarious to others.  Then Stinger comes in and sits right down at the table, looking kinda blue in the face....well, I'm a little concerned so I ask him if he wants water.  With a slight wave of the hand, he dismisses me, and then proceeds to get up and puke THREE different times, covering the bathroom, kitchen, and the hallway connecting the two rooms.  It's nice to see that the best PLO player in the world is human too...a human that can't control his alcohol LOL.

The next day I fly across the country yet again, and spend another day at home (sigh) before I fly off to Vegas for the Bellagio Five Diamond Tournament.  I made it in time for the last 5k tournament, which I decided to enter.  A hand came up where gobboboy was short and shoved, some guy called, and I isolated from the SB with A4o.  Well, the 3rd guy folded and I chopped vs gobbo's A3.  This guy then proceeded to call me a monkey, and I few hands later I shoved on his UTG raise w/ QQ with about 13 blinds.  Adam Junglen sighs and calls behind me and I immediately know he has JJ at best.  Then it folds around to this guy, who goes into the tank.  He says "what do you have over there?" which I immediately replied "I dunno, maybe A4o".  He says, "I'm not talking to you, I call you instantly.  I'm talking to the other guy".  LOL.  Anyways, he eventually folds and I cooler Adam QQ vs 1010.  Fast forward to my bustout hand:  same guy who thinks I'm a monkey raises 4.5x utg, and I immediately put him on AK because he is a fool like that!  I flat in mid position w/ A9cc looking purely to outplay, everyone else folds.  Flop is J46r, he check/calls.  Turn is a 2 bringing two diamonds, he check/calls.  River is 10 and a 3rd diamond, and I'm thinking to myself how funny its going to be when he check/folds and I show him a worse A high.  Unfortunately he check/calls within 10 seconds and tables AK with a curious look on his face.  I give him a wide grin, proudly table A9, and walk away...and as I'm walking away I hear something like "I put him on AQ..."  LOL, whatever.

So after grinding some cash, I decide to start by break at this time and skip the 15k.  Which is ok, because after day one my horse Evan McNiff is 2nd in chips w/ 190k.  He then proceeds to rape EVERY SINGLE DAY ending top 5 in chips every day!  He obviously heros the FT as well, and busts in a sick sick hand 3 handed.  A tight solid player raises the button, Evan 3bets from the SB, and Chino Rheem in the BB COLD 4BET SHOVES.  After pondering it over for less than a minute, Evan confidently makes the call w/ AJo vs Chino's A9.  Unfortunately, it was not to be as the flop of A77 and 9 on the turn GGed Evan for 3rd, but I was really impressed by his call and his performance this tournament.  GJ buddy :)

Afterwards, I flew directly to Florida for yet another cross country trip (sigh) to go on a family cruise and check out the Orlando theme parks.  This blog entry is long enough though, so I'll leave that for the next update.  Happy Holidays all :).

Its amazing

I see it all the time..Over playing AK...

Granted I play 1\$/2\$ ...But its sick how some people think after they missed with ak....Its like there hypnotized!!!

Anyway..I came accross a great book that deals with tilt/downswing and was recomemded by johnathan little...It has nothing to do with hand ranges or how to play post flop etc...

He says its the best book he ever red when it come to tilt and playing poker...His quote is "if you read this book, you will never tilt again"

So far, its changed my outlook on poker and some things in the book I already did , but some other things are good to be reminded of when things go south..

You recomended me "zeitgest" that deff made me think...

Anyway the book is called "Zen and the art of poker"... by andrew phillips

Its about always playing ur best focusing on "the long road"... Cause the poker road is "never ending" whether u win or lose big

I'm on the worst run of my life right now.  Aside from my EPT London score nothing has been going right for the last 2 months.  Every shot I take at railheaven barring 2 has ended in me losing $100k, with a total loss of $450k.  On stars every time I play $100/200 on stars I've gotten setup or coolered resulting in a total loss of about $120k.  On $25/50 and $10/20, I've been running mixed good and bad but generally terribly, resulting in a loss of about $200k at these stakes over the last 2 months.
I'm going to put my next video series on hold as its very difficult to teach when I don't even have confidence in my own game.

Think that says it all bud. I have seen you pwning stars hard in the past - was very sick - revisit that, imo wasn't a heater.

FWIW this isn't my worst downswing in terms of dollar amount lost (the \$1.3 mill at 200/400 PLO was) but its been the longest lasting and most mentally draining for sure.

I'm lazy as hell so I'll just post this link:
www.pokerstarsblog.com/2008/11/vip-club-liu-snags-car-with-fpp.html

In other news, I'm on New York City right now!  I came originally for my friend Andy's birthday party, but missed it in style as our great nation's airports screwed me over yet AGAIN by pushing my flight back a whole day.  I ended up arriving a day later, and chilling with some other poker buddies that came (Clay-MezmerizePLZ and Bob-Bigbobm).  I've also been visiting with a lot of friends from college and high school who live in the city and in NJ, and its been a great time catching up.

Today, I went to a Duke basketball game at Madison Square Garden.  Things started out slow with us making a ton of mistakes over and over and over again, but somehow we were still ahead because the team we were playing, Southern Illinois, was playing even WORSE.  In the second half though, we managed to pull ahead and ended up raping them, beating them by 35 points.  w00t!  We play UMich tomorrow, who pulled a surprising upset win over UCLA.  I was with some friends from UCLA, so I feel sad for them (and also sad for myself because I can't bet on a Duke vs UCLA game now, which would've been REALLY exciting).  It's 3oclock here in the AM, so I better get to bed so I have energy for tomorrow.

Doesn't Obama's entire campaign represent the core principles of Zeitgeist? Change, revision, and hope? The empowerment of the individual to make the country a better place? Maybe I'm missing something, or maybe im just naive, but I really do think hes going to be great for this country.

Eric Liu

Nov 6, 08 15:09:00

I hope he is great for the U.S. I guess you are right in that his campaign represents change, revision and hope, but every politician in history has been promising those things. McCain was promising those things. Hitler was promising those things. I think you can still expect the banks to be corrupt. The Federal Reserve is still a private corporation. The english speaking media is corrupt and owned by a small number of companies and controlled by a small number of individuals. The media promoted Obama and McCain and the two party system just like they have for the last 100 years. It's nice to think that things are going to change, but it doesn't seem very likely to me. I of course hope I am wrong.

I just got done playing two majors in Las Vegas--the $15k bellagio event and the $10k cesars palace classic.  I didn't cash in either of these events despite making it deep, but I still profited!  For the Bellagio event, I swapped 5% with Elky, who went on to win it, winning me $71k.  For the Cesars event, I swapped 5% with Hevad Khan, who went on to win as well winning me $50k.  Two conclusions can be made from this: my friends are good poker players, and my money runs really really good!  It's also interesting that I swapped with these 2 guys for EPT London, so maybe its the combination of all 3 of us that actually run well, who knows!
I've also been doing pretty well online, taking some shots at the Railheaven/Gusheaven games and taking pieces of others who play it.  It's a swinging stressful game, but hopefully I'll continue running okay in it.
Lately I've been eating very healthy and hitting the gym regularly.  I'm pretty happy with the results, and hope to continue getting back in shape.
I think my next stop is either going to be Foxwoods or home back to San Francisco.  I really want to spend more time at home, but Foxwoods is calling me...who knows ;).  I'll go where the wind takes me.

October 14, 2008

I'm finally home again, after spending nearly a month in Londontown.  The city was great, and the supposed "flaws" about it (weather and food) weren't flaws at all.  I thought the Indian food was simply excellent, the weather was better than I expected, and everything positive--the tourist destinations, the pubs, the women, were definitely at par.

For the last week of my stay, I played on a TV show called "Pokerheaven European Cash Game", which was a 25/50 Euro, 10k buyin game.  I expected the game to have a lot of straddling, but people truly were playing really wild: a few times the pot was triple straddled to 400!  Anyways, there were a lot of really good players on the show, but I decided to not take any of their shit and run really really good, coming away with about 70k euros in profit.  Having been the biggest winner, they awarded me with a trophy!  The show airs in a few months (not sure when) on the Poker Channel in Europe and possibly SKY Sports and CNBC Europe.

So anyways, that was 2 days ago and now I'm home.  I recently replaced the clutch for my car, and now the thing is way too tight.  This means my car dies a lot when I try to start it, which is really bad news bears considering the number of really steep hills in the Bay area.  Therefore, I'm considering buying a Range Rover, which will be my biggest and most spewy purchase (thats not an investment) up to date.

Finally, now that I'm home I get to put in some hours on my desktop, and most importantly, I get to start on my new video series.  I hope you guys are looking forward to it :).

Oct 14, 08 13:57:52

Clutch?

What do you mean by too tight? As in, the pressure is too stiff or the engagement point is changed? If it's the latter, there's usually a quick fix on the clutch pedal that can be done in like 2 minutes with a wrench..... pedal pressure shouldn't change unless you got a much higher duty pressure plate on the cluth (don't know what you drive, but that shouldn't be the issue).

Congrats on the big win tho.

DonkE

Oct 14, 08 14:16:30

i think its like...both. pressure too stiff and engagement point is too soon. ugh, maybe i should take it back to the shop?

Oct 14, 08 23:46:47

Yeah, I would probably just take it back to the shop - what kind of car is it? Some performance sport cars have stiff clutch pedals pressure wise, but that's a rarity. Adjusting the engagement point is no big deal, and I would ask them about the pressure. Maybe it will loosen up after the break-in period, or maybe it's a separately related issue with the clutch master cylinder or something.

Though if you wanna just buy a new car, that sounds more fun ;). Good luck with it man.

October 06, 2008

So, London is  pretty cool city.  First off, I had my birthday on the 29th of September, one of my friends here had a birthday on the 28th of September and yet ANOTHER one just had her birthday as well.  Needless to say, there was a lot of going out at night.  Unfortunally I'm such a fish at life that I could never fully adjust to the jetlag, so every time we went out to drink, I always ended the night way too tired and falling asleep everywhere.  The typical night would be:

1) go out with friends to get dinner

2) go to a bar for a pint of cider w/ friends and start the night

3) finish the night 15 minutes and one pint later deathly tired and ready to go home

Anyways, since I'm such a fish at life I figure I should make up for it by being good at something, so I got 4th in EPT London!  The tournament started off on a low note for me:  having busted WSOPE before dinner break on Day 1 and going on a MAJOR $400k downswing at 25/50, I started Day 1 of the EPT without too many high hopes.  My fears were quickly confirmed as my starting stack dwindled from 10k in chips to about 3k at the 50/100 level for 30bbs.  However, I managed to hero it up and won a bunch of small pots and won a crucial 1010 vs AK allin preflop to finish the day with 52k in chips.

On Day 2 I chipped up in a similar manner, and won a very key hand from the big blind against small blind's AA.  I won with K3 of diamonds on a Jd109d board, with the 6d falling on the turn and a blank card falling on the river.  On Day 3 I was admittedly getting butterflies in my stomach as this is the first time in a very long time I felt like I could score big.  I concentrated really hard and I think I played really well on Day 3, making no more than 2 mistakes (mistakes that my tournament stakee Steve and Evan lectured me on).  The unfortunate thing was, I could never win an allin preflop as I lost A5 vs KQ, 88 vs KJ, and A9 vs Q10, but things turned around eventually as I won AJ vs JJ allin pre and KK vs A2 allin pre.  The last hand of the day was when I knocked out my friend and fellow liquidpoker member Erik Sjodin when he shipped AJo and I woke up with KK on the button.  GG buddy :(

Day 4, otherwise known as the Final Table day started off well but ended up pretty crappy.  I started off chipping up well again, and had to dodge a sick bullet when i got allin preflop w/ AKo against AK of clubs.  The flop came Jc3c3 leaving me absolutely crying.  Good thing the turn and river blanked out O_O.  The next allin preflop I got into was AQ vs 1010, which I lost.  I then proceeded to see a few flops and took some pots that way including flopping 2 pair with 89 and felt very confident.  The 2 hands that really broke me were as follows:

1) I raised A10hh on the button 4 handed and the flop came K78 rainbow after getting flatted in the big blind.  I checked behind after he checked figuring I could take it on the turn if he checks again.  the turn is a Qh bringing 2 hearts and giving me an overcard, gutshot straight draw and nutflush draw.  He checked to me and I bet, and he instantly checkraised me allin.  Thinking he probably has worse draws here some of the time and I have a ton of outs, I called.  He had K10o and played it very well.

2) The blinds were so high at this point that I was second in chips w/ 20 big blinds effective stacks.  I reraised allin with A6 of clubs against an open raise trying to win the massive amount of chips in the middle, only to run into the worst possible hand he can call with (AA! :().  Unfortunately I did not win, and a few hands later busted shoving J10o after Michael Martin woke up with A9o in the big blind and finished in 4th.

The winner of this tournament, Michael Martin, at one point was down to 1.2 bbs!  In one of the sickest comebacks I've ever seen, he then proceeded to win the next 4 huge pots to instantly gain the chiplead and win the tournament.  Definitely one of the best tournament players in the world, Michael has 2 EPT final tables under his belt with this being the 3rd.  He definitely deserves the win, as he is a great player.  3rd time's the charm ;).

I just watched this film, and I strongly urge everyone to watch it as well:

http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-594683847...

I was aware of some of the claims made by this movie, but it certainly opened my eyes to many more possibilities.  Presently I am not sure what to think, because I've always taken everything I watch or read with skepticism, but after looking through the official website and Q&A, the author appears to have a comprehensive response to most of the questions and fights doubt with a saturation of sources for each of his claims.  Part II comes out in October, and I'm eagerly awaiting it.  Admittedly my outlook on the world has been altered by this film but the thing I feel the most is selfish helplessness.  If all of what is said is TRUE, what are we as normal citizens in the world to do?  How do we as pawns escape the chessboard of life?  This is something to ponder for sure...

edit: here's a pretty good news article to put things into perspective that really verbalizes my views quite well:

In other news, I arrived in london on the 21st.  I'm staying with a group of friends, and because I've been running quite bad for the last month (-$150k below allin EV at 10/20, 25/50) I've been having spurts of playing a lot, and long periods of rest when I've had a bad day.  Lately I've been resting, and I hope to do well in the WSOPE Main Event but I'm certainly not counting on it with the way I've been running.  Oh well, life goes on, and there are certainly more important things to think about.

I would be pretty skeptical of this one and make sure to look at it from all sides. I found that much of what this movie says is just plain wrong. But at the same time, I think there are some things that may be true. I would check out loosechange if I were you. It is done well and goes into great depth about the events of 9/11. I would be careful though Eric, I posted a blog about thinking 9/11 was an inside job and you'd have thought I was the worst person on the planet with all of the incredible haterd I received. I hope you don't get all of the same. If you do, don't sweat it. Most poeple just don't want to believe facts if it says somethng badly about their country.

Thanks leatherass--I'm definitely taking it with a grain of salt. I've been reading a lot of debate and discussion generated from this film, and one thing is for certain. The degree of truth contained within the film is certainly important but takes a backseat to the purported purpose of the film, that is to stir up skepticism and inspire people to search for truth rather than accept what is convenient. The film definitely accomplishes this.

With the issue of 9/11 being completely a government run insider job and "Loose Change", I'm not sure I can completely accept it. I'm not a huge supporter of conspiracy theories and I believe ridiculous ones such as "we never landed on the moon" to be quite laughable. However, it is eerily evident to anyone who lays out the facts that the story told to us about what happened on 9/11 is definitely incomplete, and US government involvement is very plausible and not a stretch. On the other hand, I believe in our country's tradition of "innocent until proven guilty" (even though our own government chooses to ignore it), so I'm not going point fingers or make accusations until absolute incriminating evidence, such as an admission by Bush or a CIA agent, can be produced.

I can settle this for you now. The government can't even effectively deliver your mail, how could these rubes possibly pull off something of this magnitude? Not even close to being possible

jjdodd27

Sep 26, 08 11:37:18

jjdodd27: isnt that what they WANT us to think??

eric, i watched that video almost a year ago. I found the religious part the most interesting. I was raised catholic and it really opened my eyes and changed my feelings towards organized religion.

I dont know if 911 was a conspiricy or not, but if it was would it really be that far-fetched? War=Money Money=Power. People are power hungry, so why not. The world's over populated so war helps the over population problem and makes the bankers a few extra billion dollars. Do you ever think about why this so called "financial chrisis" is going on right now?

All i know is the world's corrupt, its always been corrupt, and it probably always will be corrupt. Thats why im proud to be a poker player. Theres no politics in poker, theres no boss, theres no ass kissing, its just you and your opponents. It's like psychological war where after its over your whole table can go out for drinks and hang out.

more true than in most professions but not 100% sadly :(

I have no idea honestly what to think about 9/11 either. Eric, I think you say it best when you say that the story that the govt. gave us is certainly incomplete. In fact, it is pretty obvious they were tryign to cover a bunch of stuff up. Does that make it an inside job? Probably no one will ever know. But I think we can all appreciate that we didn't get the full story.

I think you make a great point about the purpose of the movie being to get you thinking. That is so true. I really wish everyone would just open up and start doing some more thinking. If you're paying significant amounts of money to an organization like the govt. I can't understand why people wouldn't want to know more about where it is going and what they people they elected are up to. And of course with Zeitgeist, they go over some pretty major things that you would think would be important to take a look into.

My argument...

The US govt were definitely not behind the 9/11 attacks.
Why?
Because they didn't find any WMD's in Iraq.

Think about it...

The US govt's justification for the war & going against the UN was that Sadam had WMD's that posed a direct threat - he didn't/destroyed them - result a huge blow for the US and British govts threatening their entire 'war on terror'

If the US govt could orchestrate the terrorist attacks & professional demolition of the twin towers they could surely smuggle in some dodgy medium range missiles into Iraq??????????

My conclusion:
At worst the govt can only be covering up its own incompetence regarding how the situation was handled and intelligence info that was not responded to properly prior to the event

interesting lines of logic, being used by different members...

I was thinking about the timing of the "financial crisis"....just in the nick of time for bush admin to push through cronie legislature?

Eric I think that you need to take a look at this if you haven't already...

http://www.popularmechanics.com/technology/military_law/1227842.html

Popular Mechanics even came out with a TV special that I tried to find for you. I cannot remember what channel ran it, therefore I had some difficulties finding it. The video articulated each scenario extremely well and was easy to follow.

Popular Mechanics essentially runs through every claim that loose change has thrown out there and effectively refutes them. I have not watched the video that you posted, and I realize that you do not believe all of the far fetched claims that "Loose Change" exhibits. However, I am fairly certain that reading this objectively will shed some light on 9/11.

I know it's hard to accept but to in tough times ppl tend to rationalize things; when in fact the most obvious answer makes the most sense...enjoy

One day the truth will out. If you watch Michael Moore's Farenheit 911 you will see further evidence that Bush and his cronies had inside knowledge of the 911 attacks. In time if enough of us keep chatting/posting there will be a movement strong enough to out and bring down the evil regimes that preside over us. Saddam and Bin Laden responsible...? Dont't make me laugh.

Score one for logic

Noble1's point about how difficult it would be to pull off this farce plus the inability to frame Iraq, which should have been as easy as falling down, Makes soooo much sense. Thanks Noble for interjecting a bit of reality.

No offense Eric, you seem like a smart guy but I would strongly urge people not watch that video as it contains little to no truth, that is unless you have two hours to waste. nferno21 provided a great link, here is another.

I agree with Noble1. That said, I don't think anyone can argue our government is full of morons, so its possible they just screwed that last part up. Either way, I seriously doubt our government did this, but maybe I'm just an optimist.

im guessing that the popular mechanics tv special also aired on a station that william randolph hearst has ownership... since his media conglomerate, like many of our other major media outlets, usually delivers only the un-biased truth.....

Just watched you bust out of the FT of EPT London Eric, you were so unlucky to run into Aces with your A6 just prior. I think you won a lot of friends though by the classy way you handled yourself both at the table and after you exited. Good luck next time Bud.

The world is much more complicated than 1+1=2. The argument that the gov had nothing to do w/ 911 because they would have planted wmds in iraq just doesnt make sense. There were weapons in Iraq, what we were sold was that there were weapons that were capable of creating a mushroom cloud. Planting a nuclear weapon on a country isnt so simple.
I think the point of the movie is this, there are a hell of a lot of unanswered questions about what happened on 911, immensley important questions, and for some unknown reason none of them are part of our public discourse, and that is extremely unjust.
So if no ones providing answers to these questions, or even entertaining the questions, we'll all just take it upon urselves to fill in the blanks.

About Zeitgeist

Many claims Zeitgeist claims re heavily disputed.

I was kind of shocked from Zeitgeist and I am trying to see how much of it is based on true historical sources.

Hey all, I'm taking suggestions for what my next video series should be.  I'm trying to choose, from order of most favored to least favored, between NL HU, NL 6max, PLO 6max, PLO HU, NL FR.  Your suggestions and preferences are most important though--after all you are the viewers :).  Please leave suggestions in the comments section.  Thanks!
