CARDRUNNERS
What's Your Edge
December 22, 2009
So I tend to get screenshot happy whenever something cool happens, like I hit a new number on online bankroll or at one table or something -- or just something weird happens. For instance, there was this one tourney, think it was WCOOP 2k from last year, where me and yellowsub busted like 3 players a piece in first 40 mins and something screwy happened and we ended up HU in this mtt for like 30 mins. Or once on UB the button just vanished off the table and starting dealing every hand from the other opponents seat.
Anyways, here's some shots I found cleaning out my computer.
Screens
Nothing is better for the confidence than we a table full of regs won't play you.

Dunno if you can see that but I had to take that with Durrrr at a few of my tables. Never thought I would play with him again.

Most satisfying pot I ever won....

End of this post, hand with moneymaker live where he runner runners me after being a d-bag just in general -- sucking out on his skanky 34xx above was fabulous.

Here is that tourney where we were HU, notice we are like top 5 in chips too haha.

Played about 7 hours since coming home and finishing up my stuff. Real happy with my play and had some run good, think I have erased about half of what was the biggest downswing of my life in terms of $. That's cool, unless the games are pretty yummy I'll be taking it easy, booking a good win this year although it was much bigger not too long ago.

In other news I've gotten an A+ in strat 390 my core B-school class from this semester, the one I missed 2.5 weeks of class in, didn't present any of our group projects, and never talked without being cold called (participation and attendance is supposed to be 15% of grade hah). Moral of the story... parcticipation grades are an idol threat I've found... I and pwn strat. Got an A in 'writing film criticism' and an A in 'Buddhism and Death' this might end up being my best semester since A+ are worth 4.4 here.

Saw Avatar the other day, I won't go in depth on a review. But I wasn't impressed by it. I didn't see it in 3-D which was a clear mistake but timing issues... the animation, perhaps because its supposed to be 3-d, looked very flat in digital.. like their was 2 distinct layers foreground and background almost like the characters were on a stage rather than in their native environment.
Their is this story telling mechanism that the main character is in the avatar when linked up, then when he sleeps he awakes in real life -- this was a cool mode for telling the story.
Aside from that though the characters are very stereotypical, archetypes -- very tired, very very tired.
The plot - nobility + the scrub, princess + outsider has been played to death -- very tired, very very tired.
The messages were very heavy handed (environmentalism, anti-war) but the theme really didn't hold up to the plot.. If you haven't watched it yet stop, SPOILERS!
So in the end the forest and its creatures save the day, the forest is resilient, it wins despite forces trying to destroy it. Also, in the end both sides come to fight, the Navi do not restrain, they are no different than the gun toting marines when pushed.
The messages really don't align with what happened, Cameron went for the popcorn approach while trying to make a serious movie with a conscience. Had the forest been utterly destroyed and the Navi made extinct --- then we have a clear message about war and being green... then we have a cause (the marines) and effect (extinction/loss).
In the end though the movie proposes these issues to be meaningful, to be of high concern, but it doesn't show that anything devastating will come from ignoring them..... it just doesn't make a coherent point... its like just shoving them in there for fist slamming effect, not to stimulate changes or realization. Silly... just silly.
My main qualm though is the film just didn't bring anything new to the table, visually it was entertaining, but I think most film theorist would tell you we aren't in an era of film where spectacle is > form... this era was 60 years ago. Now if you spend 300 million I think you should have something new to bring to the table, something refreshing to bring to film form.

That's all for now folks,

I liked the film but mostly for the spectacular effects, I agree the storyline at it's core was pretty cliche and boring. Unfortunately I have to disagree in that I think America is getting stupider so the films get dumbed down to get the big money. Oh well.
