CARDRUNNERS
What's Your Edge
August 23, 2007
After a full day of CR work, I took the family to the last game of the regular season of the Portland Timbers. We met some friends who have kids our age and treated them to the evening. The Timbers are the local professional USL soccer team. I'm spoiled by watching the premiership english soccer each week on Satellite, so this level of soccer, both skill and style, isn't particularly impressive. But we sat by the Timber Army. This is the rabid section of fans who model their support after European clubs; singing, chanting, drumming and clapping the entire game standing up. The section was packed and loud tonight. It certainly gave the game more energy, although it was overwhelming to my kids. The first half was dull with few opportunities and unfocused play, but after halftime the level of play improved and there were many chances for Portland to break the deadlock. They finally broke through in the 78th minute on a left footed volley from outside the box which dipped under the crossbar. The fans went crazy and it propelled Portland into the playoffs with a higher seeding. I don't get into Portland much since I closed down my gallery, so it was fun to get out and join all the 'youngsters' supporting the team.
