CARDRUNNERS

What's Your Edge

Andrew
March 15, 2008

It's been very frustrating to see all the backlash against us the past week. It has made me want to avoid forums on both Cardrunners and 2p2. That's probably one of the main reasons I haven't made a blog post. It's really amazing how much people can hate. 2p2 can be so negative. I can understand some of the complaints, but I just wouldn't expect it on the scale it's been on. I really make a conscious effort to keep negativity out of my life. That's one of the reasons I stopped posting about bad poker sessions (another reason I haven't posted in awhile). I think life is a lot more enjoyable when you focus on the good things and try to avoid the bad things. Lord knows there are plenty of negative things in our world today. Maybe I'm just naive, but that's the way I like to approach life.

I spent a ton of time playing this week. I've been playing 5/10 and 10/20 plo with mixed results. The results are mixed in that I did horrible when I first moved up. I played a very fearless and aggressive style at 2/4 and I think that's why I did so well down there. I wasn't in my comfort zone at first at the higher PLO games and I played too timid. I feel very comfortable up there now and my results are really coming around. I made about 12k yesterday which felt really nice.

I haven't seen a ton of an effect of being red yet. I think I would see more if I were playing NLHE. I'm sure it can't hurt though as far as getting action. I know Taylor has been getting great action in the NLHE games.

I'm sitting in the airport now. I'm going to Hawaii with my family. I don't think there could be a better time to get away from the online world and just relax for a week. I've never been to Hawaii before and I've always wanted to do. I have a lot of things I want to do while I'm there. I'm planning on golfing a few times, scuba diving, snorkeling and trying out surfting. I've always wanted to try surfting, but I've never had the chance. I hear it's pretty hard, so I hope I'm not completely terrible.

Hopefully I'll get some cool pictures and just have some good/relaxing times.

I'll leave you with this Phil Hellmuth vid that Taylor came across the other day. Can you believe that people pay for this "system" of his?

I don't care how lucky you have been in the past, you stil have to beat Phil Hellmuth's pocket queens.

Negativity...

You're doing the right thing by just avoiding the forums. I started to read a little bit of the 2p2 threads and just decided it wasn't worth it. Most of the negativity is spawned by jealousy. I guarantee that evey single one of the posters spewing hate would be thrilled to be in the same position as the CR pros. I for one am looking forward to the added benefits of this deal and trust in the judgement of CR management. After all, I can honestly say that CR is the number one reason I went from being a losing micro player to a winning small stakes player in only a few months. KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK!

Mar 15, 08 17:15:50

fwiw, I cant believe all the backlash that you guys have gotten either, both on people's blog's comments and on 2p2.. I think that you guys made the right decision from a business, personal and member-oriented POV.. have a great time in hawaii

Mar 15, 08 17:51:18

Keep fighting the good fight mate, there is a few of us around here who do support you all the way.

All the best.

Mar 16, 08 15:02:50

How about a statement from CR about that 'fantastic'deal, instead of complaining about the 'online world'????
The silence form you guys is deafening, and it's probably a very bad strategy. A lot of people are thinkin of cancelling their subscription and it seems like CR doesn't care at all.

Mar 16, 08 15:06:04

I think the complaints about you guys "selling out" or educating the fish are foolish

though the complaints about the anonymous accounts are not, FTP is pretty clear with 1player to an account, 1account to a player and well if you want to team up with them its time to accept that rule, and honestly be grateful they decided to look past CR's documented abuse of that rule

if you guys stick with FTP and play on your own accounts I'm glad for you, and think its a great partnership

Negativity

I stopped reading on 2p2 a while ago because it's so negative that I would inevitably get tilted just reading it.

Personally, Cardrunners has really had a positive impact on me, just want to let you know that while some people will be negative, there are a lot of others like me who you've helped immesurably and support you 100%

ps (would love if you guys could get rakeback for cr members with old accounts with Full Tilt now that you are partners and all)

I recently bought a new laptop (Dell M1530). Unfortunately, Dell only offers Vista on this model. I have some experience with Vista and I just don't like it at all. I really think XP is perfect. Why fix something if it's not broken? Anyway, I decided I'd buy XP and put it on myself. I figured it couldn't be too hard. I was wrong. All in all, I probably spent 10 hours getting XP successfully on here. I spent tons of time reading computer forums and just trying things out. So 10 hours later, I'm finally done with it and feeling really good. I learned a good amount about drivers, bios mode and some other random computer shit. For all the time I spend on computers, I don't know as much as I should. It's good to learn some new things now and then. Thanks to rodeo and brystmar for their help with the process.

Brian is in town right now and we've been having some pretty extensive meetings the last two days. It's not the most enjoyable thing, but it's been very productive. It's always good getting face time with Brian. We spend a lot of time talking over the internet, so it's good to get to talk with him face to face. It's also a hell of a lot easier to get things done in person.

Tonight were going out to dinner at Gene & Georgetti's. Taylor told me about this place a few weeks ago and I've been wanting to get there ever since. It's basically an old school steak house/italian place that used to be a big hangout for Sinatra when he was in town. I'm envisioning a mob type hangout place and that's very appealing to me. I love mob related things. All of my favorite movies are mob movies and I've read some good books on the mob too.

I bought Across the Universe in Blu Ray the other day (Blu Ray is sick by the way and well worth it if you have some disposable income and love movies). The movie is a musical that uses all Beatles song. I'm a huge Beatles fan and I loved the movie. I thought most of the renditions of the songs were very well done. That's not always an easy task when you're dealing with covering The Beatles. The visual aspect of the movie was great too. It was pretty trippy at times and just very colorful. It looked fantastic in HD. I'd definitely recommend checking this movie out.

I came across this stand up the other day. I thought it was hilarious. I'd recommend checking out. It starts a bit slow, but picks up soon enough. Guy's name is Mitch Hedberg. I had heard of him, but I had never listened to him.

I got my PLO BB/100 back up to 22 - this is over 12.5k hands. I had a huge session yesterday which included one of the bigger pots in relation to the buyin that I've ever won. I wonder how high of a number is really sustainable. I think the way I play translates incredibly well to crushing weak players. I 3 bet out of the big blind a lot and basically just work on tilting people. I know a good player could definitely counter my strategy as I play too loose and too aggressive and good players aren't as prone to tilt. That being said, it works so well vs. the weak players I come across at 2/4. The swings are pretty big though as you can tell.

http://www.pokerhand.org/?2184043

It was an unraised pot too. Pretty sweet. It was a very wild match so I can't completely blame him for going broke there. Still...

I finally reached Platinum status on Stars. It took longer than I thought it would. I just really don't like that site. I'm glad that I won't be playing there anymore, especially with the new upgrades FTP made. Anyway, I bought a 30" Samsung monitor and a Bose Ipod player. I still have 5k points left, but I'm not sure what I'm going to do with them. I wish they had golf balls.

I bought a new Dell XPS 1530 the other day. I've been working on installing XP on it, because Vista sucks. It was a lot more work than I thought it would be. I'm finally getting to the end though, thank god.

It's been a long week. I'm looking forward to the weekend.

I started to write a blog entry the other night while I was sitting at some tables waiting for a HU PLO game. My first line was something to the effect of, "I've been absolutely crushing lately." That was all I wrote before the games got going. I figured I'd play for a bit and then doing some blogging after the session. Unfortunately, the session was horrible and I dropped like 10 buyins haha. I didn't feel like blogging afterwards. That session hurt and I probably wasn't playing my best, but I've still been doing really well overall. I've been playing PLO exclussively and really working on my game. Below are my stats so far in 2008.

" alt="http://www.youtube.com/v/j_pFTAY7MF8&rel=1">" title="http://www.youtube.com/v/j_pFTAY7MF8&rel=1">">http://www.youtube.com/v/j_pFTAY7MF8&rel=1">

I obviously have some tilt issues at times. I also need to make sure I don't play too many tables on my laptop. I can deal with 6-8 on a good monitor, but definitely not more than 6 on a laptop. I've gotten pretty good at playing a lot of tables though. It was hard for me to play more than 4 at first because I had trouble quickly figuring out what I had. I've pretty much got that down now.

My 6max game clearly needs some work. I do think I've ran quite a bit below expectation though. I've taken some really nasty setups/bad beats on a pretty consistent basis in the 6max games. I'm going to watch some CR videos in the next few days and see if I can't plug some leaks. I want to get a little better before I make a CR plo video. I'm hoping to make one soon...

I never blogged about Santa Barbara. It was really a great time. All of the CR guys are really great guys and fun to be around. I think it's awesome how we all get along so well despite the fact that most of us haven't spent too much time together. It was incredible to have so many poker geniuses in one room. It was motivational to me. 1.5 years ago I used to play in the same games as CTS, Stinger and even Plastic when the 25/50 plus wasn't running. Now I'm slumming at 2/4. It definitely wants to make me improve and get back to bigger games. I don't really see myself ever playing high stakes NLHE ever again though. I don't have the motivation to really work on my NLHE game. NLHE just became too stale. I do see myself working hard enough to get to 10/20 PLO and maybe even higher. I'm need to play a lot more hands at 2/4 though. I need to plug leaks and 2/4 is the place to do it. Once I feel more comfortable and build my online roll, I'll start moving to 3/6 and 5/10.

If you haven't seen the fucking Matt Damon video, check it out. It's great. Even better is the fucking Ben Affleck video. See below:

February 08, 2008

Yesterday we called it an early day and head down to Champaign. We got down there by about 5 or so. We checked into our hotel when we got there. It's pretty depressing that I'm staying in a hotel when I go down there. It's just the sad truth about getting old though. Anyway, we headed to Papa Del's for dinner. It's a deep dish pizza place and it's some of the best food in town. Epdog met up with us there. He's a really good guy. It's always fun meeting people you know on the boards but not in person.

After that we headed to Kam's. Anyone that has been to U of I has probably been to Kam's. It's the oldest bar on campus and alumni usually have fond memories of it. To be honest, it's a complete dump of a bar, but I've had so many good memories there that I don't care. I love drinking there before a game. Not to mention, they offer a free shuttle to all the games. We definitely took advantage of that.

The game was incredible. It's gotta be the best game I've ever seen in person. Probably the most entertaining part of the game was the crowd's reaction to Eric Gordon. Literally everytime he touched the ball, the entire crowd booed him. There were also a ton of chants like "Liar, Liar, Liar," "Asshole!" "Fuck you Sampson," "Sampson is a cheater."  I've never seen anything quite like it. The Illini looked great the entire game. They started to give it away in the 4th though. I thought they would lose in regulation, but they were able to get it to OT. Pruitt ended up missing 3 free throws that would have all won the game (1 in regulation and 2 in OT). It was pathetic. Gordon also got lucky as hell when he banked a 3 at the end of regulation. A lot of things just didn't go the way they needed to for the Illini to win.

After the game we went out to the bars. It was pretty standard there and a really good time. We even ran into Dee Brown. Taylor has a good picture with Dee.

Plan on grinding a lot of PLO tomorrow. I also am planning on doing a marathon session on Stars in the next few days. Basically I need to make 10k FPPs to get a pretty nice TV. I never play on stars and I never really plan on playing there. I have over 100k FPPs sitting in there so I figure I might as well do something about it. I'm going to play like an 18 hour session 8 tabling 2/4nl. It should be interesting. I'll let you know when I decide to do that.

February 07, 2008

It's been a tiring week. For various reasons, I haven't slept well this week. Usually I'm a pretty sound sleeper, especially since I got a tempurpedic bed (which by the way is one of the best purchases I've ever made). I've been tossing and turning a lot though lately and it's wearing me down a bit. The good thing is I have a fun weekend coming up that should help unload some of this stress.

Tomorrow Taylor, Mork, and Justin (JV) are heading down to Champaign to see IU play U of I. The hope is U of I plays a close game. It's a great rivalry and will be a lot of fun regardless of the outcome, but I fully expect U of I to get their asses kicked. U of I is downright terrible this year. It's kind of funny that only a year since I graduated, the basketball is awful and the football is good. It was the exact opposite when I was there. I've only been down to Champaign once since I graduated. A few of my friends are still down there, so I'm looking forward to seeing them. I also just miss the good times we used to have in college. We used to do some crazy shit that just doesn't happen anymore now that we're off campus. I expect to have a rowdy night out after the game. Thursday nights were always my favorite night to go out when I was in school.

As expected, Mardi Gras in St. Louis was a lot of fun. My only complaint is that we got a pretty late start on Saturday and really didn't spend a lot of time in the streets. Drinking in the streets and just hopping from one party to the next was my favorite part last year. We had a late night on Saturday night and I damn near missed my plane coming home on Sunday. With a little luck and some running involved, I made it on at the last minute. That allowed me to get back to Chicago in plenty of time for the super bowl.

We had a pretty decent sized group of people over to our place for the game. I had 1k riding on the Giants, so I was rooting for them pretty hard. I also just wanted to see the cocky ass Patriots lose their final game of the season. That part was a bit ironic, because I rooted for them all season due to having Tom Brady on my fantasy team. Unfortunately, Brady let me down i the fantasy playoffs and my love for him greatly diminished. Since my buddy Higgins only had a day left before moving to Milwaukee to work and the fact that I won 1k on the Giants, I decided to take everyone out for drinks after the game. In college fashion, we pounded many, many shots. I had a blast at the time. The next day was a completely different story... If I could go back, I'd definitely take a few less shots.

I've come across a few songs lately that I want to post in here.

This song is from a band called MGMT. They definitely have a different sound, but they're good. If you like this song, check out the rest of their CD.

This is a great Jay Z and T.I. song. I really like T.I. It's a shame he's a dumbass and is going to prison for a long time.

Most of you probably hate this song due to it being so overplayed back in the late 90's. I always liked it. I looked it up tonight after hearing someone on American Idol sing the Dolly Parton version (didn't know one existed) of the song. I was pleasantly surprised when I remembered ODB was in the song. ODB was the man. I wonder whatever happened to Mya, because she was fine.

I love posting these PLO graphs. I just downloaded this graph program for the first time a few weeks ago and PLO is just so swingy.

I played a 1200 hand session of PLO tonight. There are a few things I'm noticing. My results are much worse when I play more than 6 tables. See the above graph where I started playing 7-8 tables. Almost immediately I began to lose. I also do poorly against short stakes HU. It just so happened of the extra HU tables I took on when I bumped it over 6 tables was a guy with $160 that I eventually pumped up to 1200. I did it pretty damn fast too. I need to keep it to 6 tables and only play people with say $250 or more.

I also think it's important to single out bad HU players and just look to pound on them. A ton of my profit comes from taking 5+ buyins from one guy in a single session.

I feel like my PLO game is really improving. I'm enjoying the sessions when I can get them in. I want to grind like 50k hands here and then maybe consider moving up. 50k hands is gonna take me a long time though...

I thought I was at worst freerolling. I was actually in a much worse spot than I thought, but I caught perfect on the turn.

Retarded tilt when I was dumping to the $160 shortstacker. I gotta stop this shit...

This is the guy I had the crazy part of my session with. I pumped him up pretty good on this hand. I ended up getting it all back and a few buyins more.

I really enjoy looking checking out all the songs you post! Check out Lupe Fiasco he's a fellow Chicagoan and has some real good beats, although I'm sure you've heard of him. I like "Kick Push" a lot by him.

We had another busy week in the CR office. The good thing is I feel like were finally starting to wrap some things up. That means we can move forward with new things. There were a lot of year end things that needed to be attended to this month. Also, working to hire the two new Chicago employees took a lot more time and effort than I ever would have expected. We are finishing up the video admin search now. I hope to have that person working by next week. Caroline started on Monday. It's been working out really well with her so far. It's nice to have another person in the office. I think she's really going to help with our productivity too. She started her blog today, so if you want another perspective on what goes on in the CR office, that's the place to go. We might even stake her to play some low limit poker and blog about that.

My girlfriend, Julia, and I met up with Taylor, Melissa, Morcos, and Tyler (Taylor's roommates) last night. They were eating at The Boundary in Wicker Park. It's by the office/Taylor's place. Outside of when I go to Bulls games, I don't get out to Wicker Park at night too much. It's a fun area though and The Boundary is a cool bar. We hung out and had a few drinks there. Afterwards I went with Julia to The Violet Hour. It's a Speakeasy. Basically, when you walk by the bar, you can't tell it's a bar at all. It just looks like an empty building. The only reason I know about it is because Taylor told me about it. I had been wanting to go there for awhile, because I thought the idea was very cool. The place was pretty much like I expected and I liked it a lot. The drinks were all old fashioned and very strong. Not the best for when you need to wake up at 7am the next morning, but what can you do. I'll definitely try to get back there sometime.

I'm heading to St. Louis this weekend for Mardi Gras. Most people don't associate St. Louis with Mardi Gras, but there is actually a huge party there. I went last year and had a blast. Basically, on Saturday you just wander the streets and drink all day. I'm going to be staying with my poker friends Rogo and Wideman. Berra will be around too I know. Pretty much the entire crew I went skiing with in Aspen will be around too, so I'll probably try to meet up with them at some point. Last year I got some great pictures. I hope to do the same this year. I'm sure I'll have a few stories to blog about come Monday.

I'm flying back to Chicago on Sunday morning so that I can be back in time for the Super Bowl. We're having a party at my place. It should be a cheap way to have a great time.

Early in the day the other day I heard about how Santana was going to the Mets. My roommate, Taylor and I decided we'd all put some money on the Mets going to the World series. Taylor and Pat bet $50 each and I bet $400 at 5:1. I thought those were great odds considering they were about to get Santana. The deal ended up going through (well, hopefully, Santana hasn't signed yet, but I'm sure he will). The great thing is that the odds are now 2.5:1. It's nice to actually get the best of it betting sports. I usually bet sports knowing I'm just paying for the entertainment of having a sweat. Speaking of that, I bet $600 with Taylor taking the Giants at +12. I'm not sure which way that game will go. I'd rather root for a close game though. I also hedged my bet a bit with a $200 bet taking the over on 53 points. I haven't really bet too much on sports lately (except for when the damn Packers let me down two weeks ago). It's fun to have a sweat every now and then.

Can't get this new Wyclef song out of my head lately. Dolla Dolla Bill Ya'll. Kind of a shitty Youtube clip, but the song is all I'm trying to share anyway.

Poker has been pretty crazy for me lately. I just went on a huge downswing at PLO. I think I was simply not playing that well. I'm starting to think that my table selection is incredibly crucial. I can crush some guys HU and others just grind me down. I need to seek out the weak players and focus on them. The swings HU are absolutely insane, so I should really only play weak players HU. Anyway, I bounced back a bit during the session I played tonight. I only played 6 tables and focused more on game selection. I really want to improve my PLO game and move up a bit. I'm not going to until I put in a lot of hands at 2/4 and plug some of the glaring leaks I have. It's fun to actively work on improving my game. I struggle to do that with NLHE these days.

Killer misclick. I'll be honest. That tilted me for a few minutes afterward. Note the fact that we were deep there too.

This guy helped my bottom line a lot this session. He was tilting pretty bad and I took him to value town a lot. This is a good example of that.

Another example

Misclicks suck. I was railing my buddy in the daily double on ftp when he created his new poker move.

He calls it the value fold. He basically preflop raised, continuation bet on the flop, then again on the turn hitting a full house. His opponent was on either a flush draw or straight (with small chance of having quads of course) and on the river his oppenent bet out with plenty of chips behind. My buddy basically said should he shove or not. I said you likely will only get a fold or a call by the guy with quads. So he decided to make his bet a 3 times raise leaving the guy a chance to call or reraise. My buddy ends up fat fingering his bet and timing out. Took him from top 10 in the tourney out of 90 or so left to about 60th by folding.

Misclicking sucks.

Checked out your blog for the first time today and really enjoyed it (including the non poker related stuff). If you can't get Wyclef's Dolla Dolla Bill out of your head try this: M.I.A. - Paper Plans. Somehow Wyclef reminded me of that song...

Sorry about the misclick, but it made me laugh at least.

Overall, the show sucked. The delivery was horrible and there was an insane amount of unecessary downtime. I still thought it was a pretty fascinating show. The people seem to have no concern about saying things that will have a very real and negative affect on their lives. I think the first contestant probably ruined his marriage. He brought his wife along. I tried to find a picture of her, but couldn't find one. She was from South America and incredibly attractive. He basically admitted to cheating on her when he said he had done things that would make her distrust him. He also said that he didn't think she was his lifelong partner and therefore didn't want to have kids with her. The kicker was that he "lied" about having ever inappropriately touched a client (he's a personal trainer). That meant he got no money and he probably ruined his career as a personal trainer too. Why would anyone go on that show? I don't know. The 2nd contestant had admitted he was adicted to gambling. He didn't get too far and I know they're going to push him on that subject. I'm interested to see what else he admits on the next episode. He seems like a real loser, so it should get interesting.

Somehow I played 3k hands of PLO today. That's the most hands I've played in a session in probably a year. No joke. I was 6-8 tabling most of the time and I played a few HU tables, so it wasn't as long of a session as it might sound. It sure felt like a long session though. The main reason I played so long was I had a few juicy guys HU that I didn't want to quit. They eventually quit me right around the time the Golden State vs New Jersey game ended so it seemed like a great time to call it a day. It was a crazy up and down session so I decided to graph it out.

I was stuck pretty bad at one point and almost called it a session. As you can see, I won all of it back very quickly. It ended up as a good session. I'm really having a solid year so far. Below are my NLHE and PLO numbers for 2008.

The one number I'm really not crazy about in both games is my agression factor. It isn't consistent across the streets and it's too low in general. I really need to make an effort to get that up. I can't really argue with my results so far though. Considering I'm winning almost $1 a hand at 2/4, I'm doing great. Obviously I'm running well, so I don't expect this to continue. I'll enjoy it while it lasts though.

Biggest pot of the night. Maybe not the best played hand because that's a pretty loose call OOP preflop. The game was playing very fast though and we were both very deep. Great flop. I was going to c/r it, but he didn't bet.

Enjoyed this one. Had to double check to make sure I had nuts. I then figured it would be a chop. Nope.

Had a feeling he was bluffing here. Either that or I can't fold a flopped flush...

Such a great feeling when people are raising big into your huge hand.

Had a ton of cards to dodge on this one. Quading up is always nice.

Classic case of playing too many tables. I never should have checked this flop. The turn raise should have set off warning flags in my head. It didn't. I'm still not sure I fold river though.

Just bad luck here.

Haha, oops. Bad reraise preflop. Although, we were 3 betting like every hand bc we were deep and the game was playing fast. I hate stacking off with bottom set in a spot like this. The flush draw gave me enough reason to go with the hand though. Well, I think that's the case. It's spots like this I really don't know the correct play. It's very possible that's still a fold even with the flush draw. Big pot to lose.

Sick swings, but solid results. Try to put in my more hands dude; make '08 a nice big comeback year. You seem to still really know how the midstakes games play and feel. BTW, I've played Ed Looney HU at PLO. he's a pretty good and tough player, htough runs great vs me. I'd probably avoid him because he's a middish-high stakes PLO HU regular.

Why is perky playing 2/4? Learning the game or busto? Maybe he's still bummed that Alec Torelli is driving around w/that M6 he bought w/his money.
