CARDRUNNERS
What's Your Edge
So I'm in the office by myself today and it's absolutely freezing in here. I wish Taylor was here so he could share in the misery. It's been getting colder everyday in Chicago and the same can be said for our office. It's another one of those days where it's hard to type becasue my fingers are so damn cold. We've had people out here a few times this week to fix the furnance, but they can't seem to get it done. The furnance is apparently old and prefers to be broken. I know they've already had to leave a few times to find new pieces for this thing. Since it's an old beast, new parts for it aren't so easy to find. They were here today and had to leave. I'm hoping the next time I see them it's the last and the beast starts kicking out warm air again.
Anyway, it's a pretty slow day here today and I don't have a ton to blog about besides a hand or two I'm gonna post, so I decided to take some pictures of the random stuff we have sitting around the office and explain it some.
The goddamn beast that won't be fixed. We'll come back to this.
One of my favorites. This is the Cardrunners baseball bat. Taylor's dad works for a company that puts logos on stuff and he got this for Taylor. The week that we got this I had been shopping around online for a game used baseball bat. I wanted a bat to swing around for whatever reason and I figured if I got one, it might as well be one used in MLB. I really wanted a Vlad bat, but the cheapest one I could find was $700. No thanks. The next one I was considering was a Sheffield bat. Those were about $250-300 and I was really close to getting one. This bat showed up and I decided I didn't need to throw away $300. Thanks Mr. Caby. Also, notice office suplies in the background. We don't fuck around at the Cardrunners office.
Ah yes. Another favorite. My best days are the ones where I have a lot of paper to shread. I don't know why, but I really take pleasure out of shreading paper.
This was a welcome addition to the office recently. Taylor's girlfriend's sister got this as a present or something to that effect and didn't want it so she gave it to Taylor. He hadn't touched it and didn't want it laying around in his house so he brought it here for storage. I've played guitar for 5 years or so, but I haven't played as much as I'd like lately. I unwrapped this baby and keep it behind my desk. I spend some time everyday playing it now. My computer takes 47 minutes to boot up in the morning, so I can get a good session in to start the day off.
Green J, baby. Taylor gives me shit because I eat the same sandwhich (green j) 3+ times a week. It comes in this container so we always have a ton of these guys laying around. What's on the sandwhich you ask? Roast chicken, avocado, basil, provolone, pesto, lettuce, onion and tomato. The avocado makes the sandwhich. Just a great piece of food there.
What I'm considering doing if this keeps up. Ok, I definitely have too much time on my hands today.

Immediately after the hand, the guy said he thought he had the nuts. He should know you can't make a nut straight with 84o. There was $125 in pot when I bet as last to act on river. I love how he goes broke there.

Not my best played hand, but interesting. I raised it up a little more than pot preflop because there were some garbage limpers and my AJ figured to beat their range. They were limping too much and limping with a ton of garbage. I don't like playing AJ OOP though, so I'm not crazy about putting myself in that spot. Bet on flop is pretty standard. Turn brings the flush. I check to get more info and to control the pot some. At this point, I'd like to just win a small to mediumish pot. The river gives me two pair. I think checking is too weak, but I'm still somewhat worried about a flush. I think my mistake here was betting too small. My small bet makes it look like I'm afraid of flush and opens me up to getting raised. I realized that after I made the bet. When he made the min raise, I thought that there was a decent chance he was trying to rep a flush when he didn't have one. He could also be raising a worse pair. I hated the spot, but with the way it played out and the odds I was getting laid, I decided a call was in order. If he was going to bluff me, he should have raised more, because it would have been a much tougher call to make. I probably would have folded.
Haven't really had much to blog about the last few days. I went out again for Halloween last night. We went on a bar crawl. There was a deal where you could pay $20 for all you could drink domestic beer, food and a trolley between the bars. Not a bad deal at all. The only problem was my costume was lacking. I loved my costume on Saturday night, but last night it wasn't nearly as good. I was without the tequila bottles in the belt, shot glasses in the belt across my chest and the moustache. The lack of the moustache was the most glaring problem. The stache made the costume. I was pretty surprised at how many people were dressed up at the bars last night. I would say that probably 95% of the people out had costumes on. It wasn't even that high at U of I. I've got some good ideas for next year's halloween and I'm already looking forward to it. One of the top options is to get my roommate to be rufio and I'll be captain hook. I need my roommate to be rufio.
Want to give some reviews on some things.
American Gangster (movie): I'd give it a 7/10. I had incredibly high hopes for this movie and that definitely factors into the rating. I thought the potential was endless with Denzel, Crowe and Ridley Scott. The thing is that the movie kind of drags on. It's 2 hours 40 minutes long and nothing really happens. One of the things I absolutely love about Goodfellas is how it builds up the rise of the gangsters and makes their life look so glamorous and then it makes the fall that much harder. In that movie, you know the fall is coming and just cringe as things start to go bad. This movie really fails in building the highs and also emphasizing the lows. I left the movie thinking, wow, it's over. The end is so sudden. Also, I found myself comparing it to The Wire, because how it deals with drugs, the inner city, and with the police chasing them. The great thing about the wire is that it builds the story so well. I think the wire vs. american gangster is a good reason why I think TV shows are better than movies. Regardless, it's still a very good movie. It has excellent acting and very good cinematography. Go see it. It's no doubt worth seeing. It's just not an instant classic like I hoped it would be.
American Gangster (Jay Z CD): I'd give it a 9/10. I've had to the chance to listen to the cd a few times through. I think it's very good. There aren't really any great songs, except probably the song with Nas, but there aren't any bad songs. I haven't been skipping any songs as I listen through. Every song is good. It's not at all like Reasonable Doubt in style, like i had heard, but that's ok. It would be hard for him to go back to a style from 10+ years ago. It's so much better than his last CD. Honestly, it's probably the best CD I've heard in awhile. I should note that it took me a few listens to really start to appreciate it.
Ben Harper - Lifeline: I'd give it a 8/10. haven't listened to this as much. because I've mostly been listening to Jay Z, but it's very good as well. Ben Harper is so solid. I like all of his CDs. It's a different type of music than I typically listen to and I like that about it. Very chill sound and great for listening to while playing poker. If you aren't familiar with Ben Harper, check him out.
I always wish that I'd talk about poker at least some in here. The truth is, I haven't really been playing. When I have been playing, I've been playing more full ring. It's a nice change, and I've been liking it. What would you guys like to hear from me on poker? I'm going to post some hands when I get a chance.
NBA started last night and I'm pretty excited about that. It sounds like there is a very good chance that Kobe will come to Chicago. That is awesome. The great part about it is that it's only going to happen if the Bulls get a killer deal. I'm not a huge fan of Kobe as a person, but I love watching him play. He's gotta be my favorite NBA player to watch. I'm pretty pumped to get out to some Bulls games this season.
Joe Sebok just launched a new poker site, pokerroad.com. Joe is a really good guy and his new site is cool. It's basically a poker media site. It doesn't have much content yet, but it's new and there will eventually be a lot of stuff up there. Cardunners got mentioned today in their poker radio show, so that was pretty cool. Barry G even talks about us and mentions Taylor by name. Good stuff. Anyway, if you like poker media, check this site out.

I was Captain Hook Wednesday night. What bars did you guys go to? We were at hotel victor, pretty good spot.
I had my first installment of Halloween this weekend. Saturday night we dressed up and went to a few Halloween parties. It was a good night had by all with plenty of tequila drinking. Unfortunately most of the pictures from the night were taken in a 2 minute span where I just did a bunch of poses that were highly influenced by the Jaegerbomb part of that youtube video I posted the other day (lots of pointing).
Me and my Ninja friend, Ruginis.
Me and Roladinho.
Note how the stache makes the outfit. It was a huge pain in the ass to wear though. It kept falling off. I'm pretty sure the glue under my nose was making me feel weird and it made it very hard to drink. Was definitely worth it though.
My weirdo roommate decided he'd be a paint huffer for halloween, because we had just watched an episode of Always Sunny where Charlie was huffing paint in one of the scenes. Absolutely terrible costume and by this point the red on his face was gone. The reason I posted this is because I wanted to point out how much he looks like Rufio from Hook, especially with the red in his hair.
Pretty creepy mask.
Good times for sure. I'll be dressing up again on Wednesday to go on a barcrawl, so hopefully I'll get some better pictures that time around.
If you haven't seen this ridiculous college football clip from over the weekend, you gotta watch it. I'd say it's gotta easily be the most ridiculous football play I've ever seen in my life. The announcer is pretty funny at the end too.

Mommy Bear and Daddy Bear were in divorce court. The judge looked down and
asked the Baby Bear, "So Baby Bear, do you want to live with Daddy Bear?"
"Oh, no," Baby Bear replied, "I don't want to live with Daddy Bear. He beat
me."
"Well then, you should live with Mommy Bear," answered the judge.
"On, no, I don't want to live with Mommy Bear. She beat me."
"Well then, Baby Bear, who do you want to live with?"
Baby Bear said, "I want to live with the Chicago Bears. They don't beat
anybody!"
This youtube video is making fun of east coast people, but it sure reminds me a lot of the typical guy in Vegas. It's kind of funny how people act in vegas. There are so many meatheads and just airhead women. I've never been anywhere else with the same kind of makeup of people. Anyway, it's a pretty funny spoof on those types of guys.
I watched the Prestige for the 2nd time the other night when it was on Showtime. It's a great movie. I think it was probably one of the best movies I've seen in the last couple years. If you haven't see it, I highly recommend it. Plus, it has Scarlett Johanson in it so you can't really go wrong.

Nice post Andrew. Real funny video :) In fact the bit on 1:40 with the protein reminded me of a scene from Wedding Crashers. Check out the ending part of it:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xnk2unJrVDs
These guys were probably inspired by Will Ferrell who is awesome btw
Oct 26, 07 19:31:29
Whooooaaa hoho, that isn't "east coast people", that is strictly the New Jersey/Long Island guido.
The rest of the east coast despises them as much as you do.
Thanks to Daut for not updating the last few days. With this post, I should be able to reclaim that much coveted #4 spot baby!
I went shopping the other day for a Halloween costume. I wasn't really sure if I'd be dressing up post college, but I'm glad I am. One of my friends is having a costume party this weekend. I always loved dressing up. It gives you an excuse to just ask like an idiot. I was an Indian the first three years of college. Mostly because I was lazy, but I also really liked the outfit. I would go all out. I'd wear a wig and mockasins. The first year I wore it, I went to a kegger and it turned out the guys working the keg were pilgrims. They gave me shit all night about how they stole my land, etc. It was a bit obnoxious, but pretty funny too. Only in college...
Haha, yes! I vaguely rememberd this picture being on facebook, so I went in and took a look for it. This is from Sophmore year with my friend Whalen (he was sam adams). Looks like I may have been hitting the peace pipe that night.
Last year me and my roommates dressed up as ghostbusters. We headed up to Madison and had a great time.
Anyway, here is what I'm going to be this year:
Can't really go wrong with costumes that include tequila and moustaches. I always love sporting a big ass fake moustache too (see below).
Can't say I thought that picture would ever make it on my blog again, but I couldn't resist.
It's getting fucking cold in Chicago. Our heating/air conditioning broke in the office a few weeks ago. It was cool enough outside that we didn't bother getting the air conditioning fixed. We didn't realize the heat was broken too until a few days ago. It's so cold in here right now that I'm actually having trouble typing. They are supposed to come fix it, but have yet to come. Hoefully soon.
Hope this post gets me ahead of Daut.
Oct 25, 07 19:50:56
I've been laughing for 3 minutes because of that fake moustache pic, and Im not done yet.
Holy mother so good
I had a solid weekend. Friday night we went out with one of my friends I hadn't hung out with in awhile. She was the former president of her sorority and was doing an all you can drink thing with a bunch of her sorority sisters. It was like a trip back to U of I as it was all U of I people there.
Saturday was a beautiful day and we decided we wanted to get out of the house. We started off the day by hitting up an all you can eat sushi joint. It was $14 for all the sushi you wanted. There were some great rules that they insisted we read before agreeing to the all you can eat. I tried to get a picture of it, but my phone wasn't working. There were some great rules. One of them was that if you left ANY food on your plate, you would be fined $5. Another rule was that no one with ANY allergies was allowed to get the all you can eat. The reason for that being that you could not claim allergies as a reason why you couldn't finish the food on your plate. It wasn't a standard buffet though. You had to order rolls. At first it seemed you had to order at least 2 rolls at once, so we were a bit worried we might get nailed at the end. We got pretty damn full but kept ordering. Luckily, they let us order 1 roll at a time towards the end. I think 3 of us ate like 80 pieces of sushi or something crazy like that. We obeyed all the rules and ate all our food and got out of there without the $5.
After sushi my roommate made some calls and arranged a game of softball. We got 10 people so we had teams of 3, 3 and 4 and just kept everyone but the batting team in the field. It was a fucking blast. I hadn't played softball in forever and forgot how much fun it is. I'm definitely going to join a league next year. My team ended up barely losing. It was mostly due to some key errors in the field made by people on the worst team. They were out there when the team that was competing with us was batting. Oh well. I had a bunch of hits and RBIs so I did my part.
Saturday night another one of my high school friends came into the city and we did a bar crawl in Wrigleyville. We hit up a few bars that I hadn't been to, so that was cool.
Great Bears win on Sunday. Overall, I don't think they looked that good, but they pulled out the victory and that is what really matters. The season is still alive. I don't have much faith in them, but at least there is still some hope.
I came across a pretty funny youtube clip over the weekend. I love gangster movies so I thought this was hilarious.
Oct 23, 07 14:57:04
Sesame Streets - great film - i gotta see it when it comes out.
Btw - where did you and your friends rent the Big Bird costume from? lol
I think I've mentioned how much I hate the Dane Cook commercials for the baseball playoffs. They are ridiculous and obnoxious. I really have no idea why they chose Dane to be their guy for this promo. What makes these commercials worse is how many of them there are. They are just nonstop. I've heard "There's only one OCTOBER!!!" at least 100 times by now. I'd be glad if I never heard it again. Anyway, I heard a great clip from SNL on the radio today. I found it on youtube. It's pretty hilarious. The best part was I heard a clip of it on the radio and I thought it was a real clip they were playing. The part I heard was him talking about CC Sabathia being a pitching machine. The fact that I thought this was real just goes to show how absurd those commercials are.
Oct 18, 07 15:47:26
wtf is actober? someone needs to yank those commercials from the airwaves.
Oct 19, 07 14:30:58
Someone seriously needs to give him a good asswhooping. HES NOT FUNNY, HE DOESN'T EVEN TELL JOKES... god damnit.
Oct 19, 07 16:34:42
For my money the worst commercials on tv or radio are the DOS EQUIS "most interesting man in the world" spots.
I really want to hurt the Latin sounding guy who is allegedly Mr. Interesting.
GGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!
I guess Denzel gave Jay Z a copy of American Gangster. He liked it so much that he immediately went into the studio and wrote an album based on the movie. Pretty badass. I guess the album is supposed to be more like Reasonable Doubt in style. Reasonable Doubt is one of my all time favorite albums. I'm pretty excited for this CD to come out. I tried downloading a bootleg of it today and got a bunch of songs in a bundle. Most of them are remixes of the black album. There are a couple songs on here that I haven't heard though that are pretty damn good. I hope it's a good sign for what's to come with the new CD.
My dad is huge right wing conservative. I was pretty conservative when I was younger and more ignorant. Nowadays, I mostly just avoid politics except when the presidential elections are nearing. That means I'll probably get back into it soon so I know who to vote for. I have pretty much stayed out of politics for the last few years. I'd say I am much closer to a moderate now than a conservative, but I wouldn't really classify myself as anything. I'm a rich christian who smokes weed and gambles for a living. If you can figure out what party I should be in, let me know. Anyway, I do lean to the right on some issues. Today my dad sent me an article saying they outlawed the words "mom and dad" in public schools in California. I think that is absolutely ridiculous. The article even states that "It also creates the circumstances where a parent who says marriage is only for a man and a woman in the presence of a lesbian teacher could be convicted of "harassment," and a student who believes people are born either male or female could be reported as a "harasser" by a male teacher who wears women's clothes." If someone said that they felt marriage was for anyone who was in love and not just for a man and a woman would they be accused of harrassment? Of course not. I like to think I'm pretty open to different views on life. Stuff like this just makes me shake my head though. What is the point? Are people really that offended by the use of the words mom and dad? I just feel like working to avoid offending people goes both ways. I think it can be lost that law changes like this offend people like me.
I have never stated anything political in my blog and I probably never will again. I just thought this was a crazy development in our country and I wanted to voice my opinion, especially since it's not getting any media attention.
End rant.
Oct 18, 07 09:24:00
When I was in vegas, we were watching the news and they said the words "marriage" and "family values" were being considered harassment and homophobic somewhere. Unreal.
Oct 18, 07 23:44:35
go to spinemagazine.com - they have a few cuts "Blue Magic" and "Roc Boyz" - both pretty good ... "Diddy" executive produced the album, but it's supposed to be pretty fresh.
Taylor was waiting for a call at the end of the day yesterday. He was tired though and wanted to go home, but he couldn't go home because he doesn't get cell phone service at his apartment. Therefore, he decided to take a nap under his desk in the office. Good stuff.
I had a good weekend in Iowa. The Illini game sucked. The shitty thing about them is that I have never once seen them win in person. I've seen the Illini play about 10 times as well. One day... The good thing about that game was we had great seats. My buddy, Ben, used to be a manager for the team so he got us the hookup. We even made it on ESPN. I had a few people tell me they saw us when the ESPN cameras were panning the crowd. Always fun to get on TV.
Poker has been going absolutely horribly for me in October. This is the first month since when I was in Vegas that I've really been able to get some hands in. Now that the new CR site is up, I have some more time to put towards grinding and I want to try to average 1k hands/day for the rest of the year. So far in October, I've played almost 11k hands and I've been losing nearly $1 per hand. That's pretty damn frustrating. I've ran absolutely horrifically. I think I've played well. It's just been one of those runs where it seems like you lose every meaningful pot you play. I'll turn it around sooner rather than later though. I'm due for a big rush.
I've got my first NBA fantasy draft coming up this weekend. NBA fantasy last year was the first time I took fantasy seriously. My first season didn't go very well. I drafted a poor team and never improved it throughout the year. I took 2nd to last. I read a great article on yahoo about taking a more statistical approach to the draft. I spent some time yesterday working on creating an excel sheet so that I can input my players as I draft them and make sure that my team is well balanced. The excel sheet is pretty bush league, so I'm going to try to figure out some ways to improve it, but it's a good start.
I read some good pop culture news yesterday. Linday Lohan is apparently broke. What a joke. I don't know how you piss away millions so quickly, but she sure did a good job at it. T.I. got arrested for telling his bodyguard to buy him 10+ machine guns and silencers. I'll never really understand rappers fascination with guns. These guys are making millions and living the life and they insist on carrying guns around.

Ha ha - nice picture. Reminds me of the time after a heavy night out I had to go find an empty office to have a snooze. There were two desks so I lay down under one of them. Of course when I woke up an hour or so later there was someone using the other desk so I had to lie still until they got up...
One of my friends bought Halo 3 the other day. Luckily for me, the internet in his apartment building won't let him access Xbox Live. That means he's just been leaving the game at my apartment and coming over here to play it. I'm not good at all at Halo, but I still enjoy playing it. I've really been liking the new Halo. The graphics are great and I like most of the levels for the Live play. I'm hoping I can get considerably better in the next few weeks so that I can actually rack up some kills.
Just downloaded the new Radiohead cd. I haven't got a chance to listen to it yet though. I've heard it's a great album. I'm a pretty big Radiohead fan, so I'm excited to hear it. I plan on just listening to it all the way through on the way to Iowa.
I'm leaving for Iowa in about an hour. I'm going with my roommate and meeting up with some of my friends from U of I. The Illini are playing the Hawkeyes this weekend. I'm going to go to the game. It should be a solid Hawkeye beatdown. My brother just started going to school there. I haven't seen him since he started, so I'm looking forward to shooting the shit with him about the college experience. The nice thing about Iowa (like u of i) is that you only have to be 19 to get into the bars, so we can go out to the bars this weekend.
HUGE fantasy week for me. If I can win in my $500 league, I'll be right back in the mix of things. If I lose, I think the season is about done. I need me and my buddy Berra to win. We both have pretty shitty teams, but the bye week is helping us out this week. Actually, my team is decent, I just need guys like Vince Young and Larry Johnson to at least pretend to show up this week.
I played a lot of poker this week. It didn't go quite as I had hoped. I lost about 2 buyins over a few sessions. I was focusing pretty hard on playing and didn't really save many hands.

Few things about this hand. I called preflop because we were deep, I had position, and the player was getting out of line. I felt with position and my skill advantage I could win money calling there preflop. A lot of the time when he checks the flop like that, I will bet behind and just look to take it down there. I opted to check behind in this spot. The turn gives me a straight draw. It's a perfect spot to put out a semibluff, especially after he checks again on the turn. At this point, I'm thinking he is pretty weak. Going into the river I had already decided if he threw out a weak blocking bet, I would put the pressure on. I shoved over the top, which is a pretty big move, but it basically makes it impossible for him to call without a huge hand. I'm representing a huge hand here and I'm almost positive he doesn't have one.

This I was kind of lucky that I was right with my call. However, I was thinking this was the type of guy that would bet Ac or Kc on the turn. The bet seemed like he was either milking for value or bluffing and trying to make it look like he was milking for value as the bet is only barely bigger than 1/2 the pot. His timing mixed with his check behind on the turn made me think he didn't have anything.
Be back on Sunday in time for the Bears game and football all day. I really can't believe that the Dallas vs. New England game isn't the sunday night game. I'm pretty excited to watch that game though. I'm pretty sure that New England is going to cover the spread on Dallas (6.5). I'm probably even going to hop on bodog and throw $50 on it.

How bout them Hawkeyes?!?!
I wish I woulda gone back to IC for it but I honestly thought the hawks were gonna lose.
What bars did you make it out to? That's cool it's still 19, I know some (really old) people were pushing for a 21-ordinance. I remember a few years back when all the bars were 18 and no one ID'd, those were the days.
