What's Your Edge
Last night I decided that I wanted to play on UB. I asked Taylor to borrow 10k. Right off the bat, things were going bad. I got up to 2k pretty quickly at a PLO table only to lose a 4k pot with a hand I thought was the nuts. I flopped a flush draw and hit it on the turn. Having the ace high flush usually is the nuts on an unpaired board. However, there was a straight flush possibility. I didn't even see it. I asked god to not pair the board after the money got in and he granted that wish. I couldnt understand why the 4k pot was going the other way. Unfortunately, that was not the only time that night I'd have a hand Id consider the nuts followed by surprise as the chips go the other way. Long story short, I was down 5k right away and borrowed 5k from two other people so that I could keep playing. Im usually on for a few buyins so I need money to keep playing. Things didnt get any better. It didnt help that I wasnt playig my best. I wasnt laying down hands like 2nd nut flush in PLO 6 man and you really need to do that most of the time.
I started playing nlhe. Throw in some 10/25 nlhe ass beatings (reason i got money on ub was to play some 10/25nl but they were full and i sat at PLO) and I was down about 12k. It was getting late too. I'd say at this point its about 3am. However, I knew that everyone that lent me wanted the money back asap. If I ended up stuck I was going to have to withdraw money from my other sites, put it on UB and send it back. Basically, it was going to be a pain in the ass. I decided I was going to keep playing and try to get back to even. It probably wasnt the smartest idea, but the games were playing soft and I had an image that I knew would get me paid off big if I could start catching some cards. I never really rebounded much in the 5/10 PLO. Luckily, I got some action at 10/25plo and ran hot. I got up to a 16k stack there and I was back in good shape. I was still down about 2k when that game broke, so I went to 5/10nl to win it back. It didn't take too long. That game was playing VERY soft at that time of night. I ended the night up $200.
People used to tell me I had one of the "winning" accounts on UB. I used to perpetually run well on UB. I've won the vast majority of my money on UB. I'd say at least 75% of my total winnings have come from UB. However, lately I just cant get anything going on there. I'm really not sure why. I have been getting into pretty bad spots, not sucking out much and getting sucked out on a lot more than I feel like I should. I'm probably not playing my best there either for some reason. I should note that last night during the entire UB session I was playing on two other sites. I came out ahead about 2k on each of them. I don't think I was playing that terrible... Anyway, I sent all the cash back and outside of a low limit SNG video I'm gonna make, I'm just gonna stay off UB.
I was looking around on FTP today and I saw someone sitting at a 1k hu HORSE sng. It seemed like a good idea to play some horse, but I didnt really want ot play for 1k. I looked and there wasnt anyone sitting for smaller stakes hu horse games. I decided to fuck it and play the 1k one. I ended up running really well and i won it. Most of the games I think I'm ok at. The stud version games are pretty tough for me. Luckily this one only got to razz. The deck basically just hit me in the face. Anyone know anywhere that spreads HORSE cash games? I think itd be fun to mess around w/ some lower limit HORSE games. Its interesting to play other versions of poker besides NLHE.
I havent really been playing much. When I have played, I basically have been breaking even since my rush. Thats fine with me. I probably will play a decent amoutn tihs weekend. Im trying to get away from playing during the week, because i seem to get too easily distracted when i play during the week at school.
I was supposed to write an article for pocketfives this week. I really hate writing articles. I never know what to write about and im not a very good writer anyway. I ended up making a 30 min 2/4nl vid that I'm hoping they will just put up instead of the article. Keep an eye out for that. Actually, Ill post on here when and if it goes up. If they dont like the idea, ill just throw it up on CR as a bonus vid. I think it was a decent video but maybe a bit basic for guys who regularly watch my videos.
I bought a vaporizor the other day. I wont get into specifics about what its used for, but its awesome. Best purchase ive made in awhile. My main concern w/ that hobby has always been that its bad for you. Now it does less much damage to my body. It was expensive, but I can already tell it was well worth it. I went with a Volcano...best one out tehre from what im told.
There's the pic of me in my hunting gear.
That was the view out of the blind that I hunted this year. It's a spot I haven't hunted in probably 5 years and I've never really had much luck there. This year was no different.
I hope everyone had a good Thanksgiving. I personally really enjoy Thanksgiving as a holiday. Getting together with the family, eating a lot of food and watching football is always a good time. We also have a family tradition where we go hunting the weekend after Thanksgiving. I started hunting when I was probably about 8 years old, so I've been doing this for a long time. My grandpa was an avid hunter. He hunted all over the world, including Africa. While he is no longer with us, he did a good job of passing on the love for hunting. One thing that I have always missed out on is opening week. My dad and a bunch of other people come up for opening week and hunt. Earlier in the season is the better time to get a deer, but I've always had school. Next year I will finally be able to come up for that, so I am really looking forward to that. We hunt whitetail deer at a place we have up in the middle of nowhere in the upper part of lower michigan. My great grandpa bought the property in 1947 and it has been slowly upgraded over the years since then. Land has been added on and the cabin was upgraded several times and finally rebuilt several years ago. It's really a special place up here. I love getting away from the stress of the real world. I just hang out in the woods a lot and read books...good times. In fact, if I want to get on the internet, I have to use dial up. If you haven't been on dial up in awhile, you probably are forgetting just how bad it is. It's awful. We didn't even get cell service up here until this past summer. It truly is in the middle of nowhere.
So far I've seen two doe. I'm looking for a buck, so i haven't shot at anything. I shot my first deer when I was 10 and I haven't shot one since then, so I'm on a bit of a cold streak. At this point I enjoy going out there probably more than the actual quest to shoot a deer and that's fine with me. Although, getting up at 530am isn't the easiest thing to do. I'm going to try to get a pic posted of me wearing my hunting gear. I wear my grandpas old outfit that is probably originally from the 1950s or 60s. It's an interesting outfit.
I went to get a broadband wireless card so that I could have access to the internet on my family road trips to Michigan. Basically, the coverage sucks. It only covers about half the area on the ride from Chicago to Detroit. On top of that the cards are $80/month and not $60/month like I had thought. I opted out of getting one.
I bought the new Jay Z album and his first album, Reasonable Doubt. Reasonable Doubt is an amazing album. If you don't have it and you like rap, I highly recommend getting it. His new one is solid. I think it's about what you would expect. It's not as good as the black album, but it's better than a lot of the albums he put out before the black album.
Poker is going really well. I continue to run well. I've got my roll up to 55k now. It's a really good feeling having a large amount of money online again. It was very strange for me when I was nearly broke online. I'm glad that isn't the case anymore and I really hope this upswing continues. I've completely erased the biggest downswing of my life and I've made about 10k on top of that. It's always nice to be at a spot where you are at your peak for the year. I hated thinking that my peak was a month ago and that I was nowhere near it.
I've basically been killing the last few days. I've got my bankroll sitting around 45k. I even managed to take about a 6k hit towards the end of the day at ftp. I've been playing a really wide array of games. Here's a list of what I've played in the last few days...
4/8: HU, 6man
5/10: HU, 6man, PLO
10/20: HU, 6man, PLO
I've basically been bouncing around and finding the best games. It's been working out really well. I think I'll feel completely comfortable about my roll again when I have it at about 60k.
I've learned a ton from this downswing I had. It's so important to have confidence when you are playing. Even if you think you are playing ok, if you don't have confidence, you aren't playing your best. With poker, its essential to make sure you are playing your best as much as possible. During the month or so that I was struggling, I never really felt good about my game. That caused me to play poorly overall and to tilt more. I think the best thing you can do when you are running bad is to take a step back from the game. It wasn't until mentally I thought I wasn't going to play for a long time that my head really got cleared. That combined w/ my friend building my confidence by telling me I could crush the fringe site was really the key. When I got on there and ran well, my confidence came rushing back. In hindsight, I wish I had just stepped away from the game much sooner. I never shoudl have let myself get into the spot where I was on such a huge downswing. I also think that switching sites when you are running bad really helps change your view on the game. I got a fresh mindset when I got off UB.

Nice to win an 8k pot w/ your opponent getting it in dead.
Also, the FTP deepstacked tables are awesome. I've been playing a ton of 4/8nl w/ $1600 buyin.
Oh yea, I forgot about this one. Another massive pot w/ the guy getting it in dead. This one was 625bbs lol.
