What's Your Edge

David Benefield : Poker Blog
May 31, 2008

Yesterday was the first event of the WSOP, and I made a pretty decent showing in the 10k plh. I finished the day with 131k, after 20k starting stack, and the average is around 100, so I am feeling pretty good about it. The blinds today start at 1200-2400 with no ante cuz its pot limit. Honestly I have been playing super standard super boring abc poker since there isn’t really a ton of point stealing the blinds.
In an interesting turn of fate, my favorite person Patrik Antonius is also in the 10k plh. He obviously has 263k, so he is more than twice as good as me. He is ALSO sitting on my direct left today. …………………… I mean really? I understand that for people that believe in fate, fate would put him HU vs me in the 25k since I was talking mess about playing him first round, but cmon, putting him directly to my left when I am the third biggest stack at the table is just cruel and unusual punishment.
This time I am not going to talk any mess, and am just planning on playing the usual awesome tourney poker I know I can today. Hopefully I can get lucky and accumulate some chips today, and maybe even bust through and make my first wsop final table. There are like 70 people left though, so I definitely have a long ways to go. I am also debating telling patrik who I am. I have never met him irl, and im not sure if he knows who I am. He def knows Durrr though and has possibly seen me with him, and I know he has seen me in bobbys room. The worst thing would be for me to think he doesn’t know who I am, then try to own him because of it, then he re owns me because he DOES know who I am. That would make me v v sad.
Last night after the tourney I went to fix with Ryan and Tom. The yellow tail jalapeño is absolutely amazing there, and I haven’t had it in a month or so and was thinking about it all day. After eating I came home and there were some short handed plo games involving patatino, who is not having a great year at the plo tables. I started off down like 60, but managed to claw my way back to even, actually finishing up like 500 bucks when the game broke. I am feeling very good about my plo game lately and have been playing deeper and deeper as I get more confident.
The reason I short stack it is because I really don’t think im that great of a plo player. I have been working a lot on my game and talking a lot about hands with a lot of people, and am getting more and more comfortable with my deeper stack game. This summer I am probably going to be playing a bit more, and running up stacks. I am still planning on starting off short because I feel I have a pretty large edge that way, plus lower variance is nice. I will be staying on though and hopefully I can lose one of the biggest pots in ftp history sometime in the near future.
As far as hands in the tourney yesterday, a lot of people have asked me, and I honestly didn’t really have any cool ones. I sucked out on Max (inyaface) with AKcc vs AA aipf for like 40k chip pot, but he was only like 19x deep so pretty standard. I also won a small flip vs John Juanda for a 65k chip pot. I raised cutoff juanda potted it with a 20k stack so he made it 15 or so, sb COLD CALLED and he has me covered, gets back to me I think for 20 seconds considering stuff, and decide to ship. Juanda gets it in cold caller guy folds, and I win AK vs 99, so that helped.
What else what else.. I did a 3 barrel, which I will probably never do again. I bluffed the 2 scare cards, except that he floated the flop with both of the scare cards and had top 2 on the river sooooo gg my 3 barrel attempt. The guy that cold called juandas 15k doubled me up earlier in the day. I had my stack down to 7k pretty early before I figured out I should be a little nittier. I limped cutoff 250-500 with 7k stack and AA, sb completed, he checked in bb. Flop came 952 checks to me I bet 1050, sb folds he calls. Turn is a 3 he checks I pot it for 3600ish and he sticks rest in with 75 and I hold. An orbit later I raise AJo cutoff to 1300 and he calls in bb. Flop J97 he bets out 2500. I think for 20 secs for effect and pot it and he puts rest in with 92o. That definitely helped and propelled me back into action.
Today it also looks like I have Benyamine at my table. He does some goofy stuff in NL, but is def gonna be better than the field. Hopefully I can bust him too, as he has run like god vs me in plo recently. I actually heard a funny story about him talking about how ftp is rigged, and he likes to call with gutshots cuz he knows he is going to get there, or slowplay sets and just check call cuz he thinks that the draw will hit and he will lose, etc. This actually explains quite a bit seeing some of the hands he shows down, and it is also sick that he is the biggest winner in online plo.. makessss ya wonder!
Anyways, im going to go get a workout in before the tournament starts. Hope you guys enjoyed the HU vid vs pat!

May 29, 2008

Today my plan was to wake up, get in a workout, and get all of my stuff in order for the wsop stuff. My parent’s last night in town is tonight, and we have reservations at Del Friscos tonight, as well as some pretty sweet tickets to see Love at Mirage. My dad’s bday was at the end of march, and I told him when they came out I would get us some great tickets; He is a huge Beatle’s fan too, so hopefully it will be a great time.
Instead of waking up and working out, I woke up and played some plo. I started off down like 25, but managed to get unstuck, finished up like 6k, then the game bustoed so I quit planning to go work out.. then I saw a pretty sweet 2-4 stars game running. I haven’t really played a lot of high stakes NL recently, mostly have been sticking to plo, but that is mainly because no games run. I think I am down like 250 or something this year in 2-4nl+, which kinda sucks, but I feel like I haven’t really run all that amazing.
Anyways, there has been a guy recently who has been playing on stars a lot, and he hasn’t really been playing that great, so games have been forming a lot more recently. I was pretty much even when this hand happened..
http://www.pokerhand.org/?2682625 - Preflop I generally fold, but the other guy in the pot never really folded and didn’t really play that well post flop, so I felt like I could call profitably. If I was 12 tabling 5-10 or something I would definitely fold. Flop play I considered leading, which I think isn’t bad, but I decided to go for a check raise instead, thinking vaga would continue here with just about everything. He did, and I made a pretty small raise to get out steve. I am obviously super excited to get it in on the flop here all day. Part of the reason a raise is cool is that it folds out a lot of hands that would have a decent amount of equity if I just check called. Anyways, he had an ace and timed down to literally 3 seconds in his time bank and stuck it in, I snapped it and bricked off the coinflip. Meh.
The game broke shortly thereafter, which sort of tilted me, and I was pretty unhappy to lose money on my last day before the series started. I got in a great workout though and have spent the rest of the day setting up some new furniture at my place. I also got my dad to play some guitar hero with me, and after 3 games he was pretty lights out on most of the songs on easy mode. He really enjoyed himself and was smiling and rocking out a bit which was super funny to watch, and I’m glad he had fun with it. Rock Band is a pretty cool game in that regard in that it’s fairly sociable and it’s easy to get anyone into it.
Tomorrow I am playing the 10k PLH championship, which also happens to be the first event of the series. I am not really a fan of pot limit holdem, no antes kinda turn the game into a nitfest, but hopefully I can run decent and finish off the day with a few chips and maybe start the series off with a good cash. Everyone is in town now for the most part so hopefully we can get some pretty sweet basketball games going in the next few days too. Laters.

I just got back from seeing the new Indian Jones movie, and I must say I was quite impressed. I would call it the perfect level of cheesiness, and it was really enjoyable for me. I liked the first 3 movies a lot when I was younger, and was really hoping they would pull this one off. I didn’t really expect it to be a flop, but I didn’t think it would be all that great either, needless to say I was pleasantly surprised.

My parents got into town this afternoon and stopped by to check out the house. My mom is really into interior decorating stuff just like any mom, and I am going shopping with her tomorrow to pick out a bunch of furniture and accessories, and maybe some paintings as well. I’m not really sure if my dad will come, he isn’t really into the vegas thing, so he will probably want to join in or go make some friends on the golf course.

Everyone is getting into town over the next couple days, and I am getting pretty excited about wsop time. I feel really confident about my game right now, and am expecting to have a better series than last year (this will not be hard). I haven’t really been playing tournaments a lot lately, but played the Bellagio 25k event as well as 2 of the 5k prelims, and played really well, made final table of one of the 5ks, and got donkstriked in the 25k. I am not really sure of my plan for this summer, but I think I am going to try to play a bunch of tournaments and try to do the run good so my grandparents don’t think I’m an idiot for dropping out of school. Even in this day and age people still think winning a tournament means you are the greatest player in the world at that time.

I got some cool praise from Patrik Antonius today which is always fun. Talking about the 25k HU he said “I played Aeron73 first, he played really well, he was the toughest. I was lucky to get past him.” This made me fairly happy, as it is always good to get props from great players. Speaking of which, my next video is of my HU match with Pat. I tried to give some good analysis on the hands I played, as well as talk about a few interesting changes that can be made in a HUSNG vs a HUNL cash game setting. Hopefully u guys like it, though its just 1 tabling so it’s kinda slow.

Just dont get how u could like the movie. I just gave up when they had shia labout in the leather jacket as the tuff guy on the mororcycle just started laughing and the laughs dident stop through the movie. If it was a comedy i would prob give it 2 out of 5 but as an action film i give it a 0...Storyline was pretty awesome though where they just popped stuff in i felt like i was watching lost as if they make up shit as they go along. I heard that they threw away many scripts before going with this one just don't know what could of been worse.

May 24, 2008

So I haven’t done a blog in a week or so. I got back this morning from Hawaii which was absolutely incredible. I will go into that first. First day in we got in pretty late and were staying at the westin in kaanapali, which was about a 45 minute drive from the airport. We met up with Cole and Larissa and had a couple drinks and some apps, then turned in early.
We had some cool plans for the trip, and were planning on going surfing day 1 to get some lessons; none of us had ever been before, though Haley tried to convince us that she did it in California though none of us believed her. Anyways, we showed up at 2 for our lesson, but the surf shop guys talked us out of going because the high tide was up and waves were low. We figured it would be smart to trust their judgment and rescheduled for our last day.
As far as nutrition on this trip, I didn’t care at all since it was a vacation. I ate 2 hamburgers a day and drank lots of strawberry daiquiris and smoothies and ate tons of French fries. It was glorious. There was an unreal number of places with amazing burgers, so I made sure to take advantage of it. I did manage to get myself into the gym twice though and got a couple pretty good workouts in. Obviously not ideal, but I was happy that I managed to get in there at all. It is so easy on a vacation to just lay on the beach all day, which is what I generally do on my trips. I actually weighed in before and after and was same exact weight, which is slightly annoying I think, as I feel it means I probably lost a bit of muscle and gained a bit of fat, but that’s ok. Still have 8 pounds to go in my ‘bulk’ phase, so hopefully can knock that out in the next couple weeks.
Next day up we chilled by the beach all day, swam in the amazing pools, then went on a sunset cruise. Honestly I was a bit skeptical about this, but it turned out to be a blast. The food was great, the open bar was awesome, and we made sure to take advantage of it. We were playing 4 way rps for drinks, and any time u had a loss you had to drink, and if everyone ownd u one round u had to finish ur drink and get a new one. Needless to say we only played this for the last 15 minutes or so of the cruise but managed to do a pretty good job trying to clean out the rest of the bar. It was a great relaxing day followed by an awesome night.
I am going to go off on an aside here to talk about how good cts runs at cc roulette. I am pretty sure we did 10 or 11 cc roulettes over the course of the trip, and I won 2 of them. Last time I was with Cole, Larissa, and Haley, I lost a 5k nobu cc roulette. Needless to say the streak continued. Going into the final meal of appetizers and a couple drinks before the flights out, I won a 120 dollar bill, so I managed to eek out 2 wins overall. CTS managed to win the sunset cruise, chopper tour, etc. Anyways I felt like I should share how amazing he runs in case anyone didn’t know.
Next day we had a helicopter tour planned and headed to the heliport in the early afternoon after a nice long day at the pool. I have never been on a helicopter before, so I was pretty excited. I had also heard that the heli tours were pretty amazing in maui, lots of erosion, volcanic crap and big mountains going around. We had a blast, though I started getting a little motion sick towards the end. We saw a whale in the ocean as well as lots of giant sea turtles and manta rays. It was cool being able to fly into valleys and get up close to waterfalls, and we got some pretty sweet pictures too.
Next day up was our last day, and we had to wake up at 6am to make it to our surf lesson. Apparently the waves come in the best early in the day, so we sucked it up on just a few hours of sleep and headed back to the surf shop. It was absolutely awesome. I was super happy and managed to get up on my first run, so felt pretty good about that. Cole obviously had the pressure on but followed me up perfectly. I took a couple spills after that, but managed to get some good pics and had an awesome time. The girls seemed to have a blast as well.
We had probably 5 hours to kill after surfing, as we had pretty late flights, not leaving out of Hawaii until like 9pm, so we headed to the pool for another long day of lying in the sun. The whole trip was awesome and everyone had an amazing time. We made it to the airport an hour early and watched an episode of the west wing, which was pretty sweet, I had never seen it before. Running on no sleep I managed maybe an hour on the plane. I had a connecting flight thru LAX and had a 2 hour layover, and at this point was pretty beat, since it was now 6am or so. I got into vegas at around 815 and made it back to my house around 9, giving me a hefty 3 hours to get some sleep before the 25k. I managed to get maybe another hour and woke up 15 mins before it started and grabbed a shower to wake myself up.
I had talked a bit in a 2p2 thread about how it wasn’t a big deal that Patrik Antonius got the rules changed and managed to sneak up and get into the top 64 to play, and said how I would love to play him first round and stomp his soul. Well, I got my wish! I ended up losing on a pretty awful play by him, got in JJ vs A9 aipf for like 45x, and he binked the A on turn. I had a couple other cool hands in there, and will potentially turn it into a video, so don’t want to talk too much about the match right now.
I still haven’t slept yet and its 720 in LV as of now. I am short stacking some plo and not really doing that great. Benyamine runs pretty awesome vs me, I am not sure how he is up so much lifetime in plo he does lots of silly stuff in small to medium pots imo. http://www.pokerhand.org/?2659792 anyways, I am very disappointed that they are not finishing up the 25k tonight, I really want to see who wins! I got the ufc fight recording right now so am going to probably go flip that on as soon as bloch finishes off pat, hopefully theres some sicko fights, this is one of the best cards ever and I can’t wait to watch.

DB is bad

I def agree that Benyamine makes a bunch of mistakes in the small/medium pots. He must make it up with good decisions in larger pots or induce more mistakes due to his play. Or run good.

May 18, 2008

So the last couple days have been fairly hectic, but i am FINALLY moved into my house. I am not really sure what the problem was, but basically i wasnt allowed in until 6 days after i was supposed to close. I dont really want to get into it right now, but I think they basically were trying to do everything they could to keep me from buying this place, which is fine and all i can see why 40 year olds would be tizzed a bit about someone half their age buying a nice house and what not, but i am bringing them business in a time where their source of income has all but dried up over the last two years, so they should be falling head over heels to get me into this place. In any case, i am here now, and spend the first night in my new bedroom last night.

There is quite a bit of work i need to do to get everything set up nicely, but i should be able to get most everything done before series starts. Need to get a cpl of the rooms repainted, and need to get all furniture and what not set up, but for the most part this palce requires VERY little work, which was one of the big factors in my decision to buy it. Have both internets set up as well now too, so if one ever bustoes mid hand i can switch it over quick. Networking people are coming next week to set it up so it does it automatically, so that will be nice. The most infuriating thing in the world is dcing in the middle of a big pot.

Something we set up yesterday.. ROCK BAND. it really is super awesome. I had played it once before i got it, and really liked it, but have been pounding away at it for the last 2 days and am really enjoying it. I suck pretty terribly at drums, and am not v good on guitar either, but at least i can sing! It makes me want to go buy a guitar and take lessons and learn how to actually play my own music, but i feel like its something i would pick up, do for a month or 2, then just kinda give up on completely.

As far as workouts and what not, i have been working out super hard in the last 2 weeks, hitting the gym almost every day and trying to eat like a horse. I am up to 196.6, not sure what bf% but i dont really care abot that right now. I am trying to eat relatively good foods so i dont just gain a ton of fat, but its hard to get a lot of calories without eating a hamburger mixed in every now and then. I am really looking forward to cutting once i hit 205, hopefully i can do that within a month, i feel like this first part was some weird fluke or my scale at home was busto or something, but i feel stronger and have more energy working out this way instead of before. I wasnt eating nearly enough calories on my original plan to build muscle, so i think this will work out much better.

Tomorrow i leave for Hawaii. YAY! i have never been before, and everyone seems to think it is absolutely amazing. We are staying in maui at some place Haley stayed at before and really liked, and i will be there for 5 nights. We are meeting up with CTS and his gf and will hopefully plan a bunch of cool activities. I want to really try to not just lay on the beach doing nothing the whole time. I have a habit of bringing a cpl books and just laying on a lounge chair near the water getting enveloped in a fresh fantasy world or learning about how some company self destructed. Dont get me wrong, this is a super awesome way to spend a vacation, and i definitely need some relaxation, but hawaii has tons of awesome activities and i can read on any beach.

I havent played much poker in the last few days. I played 5 hands of plo short stacking and shipped 8400 and did the instaquit right after blowing the same amount at best buy and bed bath and beyond, so i felt fairly productive for the day. I regged for the 25k HU tourney yesterday, and get back from my trip at like 7am on the 24th, so will have to powernap before that starts so i can be on my best game. Anyways, leaving pretty early tomorrow so wont blog probably till i get back. Hope you all have awesome weeks, i am in an astonishingly great mood.

May 14, 2008

I am convinced that it is the goal of every real estate agent and loan officer in Las Vegas to prevent me from moving into my new house. TECHNICALLY I closed this morning at like 8am, and normally that means you get the keys and get to move in! Gasp!!! Well, I signed all the papers, handed over my BofA cashiers check, and got a look of scorn returned to me. Apparently now, BofA cashiers checks need to sit for 48 hours before clearing, and so I have to wait until Thursday to move into my house. This makes no sense whatsoever, as BofA cashiers checks have always been pretty much gold.

Anyways, this was quite annoying, but I did manage to get electricity, internet, water, and gas set up at the house. I stopped by today and made sure the internet and everything works, and I am very happy with Cox. Craig helped me run some tests and we managed to get 13 mbps down speed, which was pretty sick. I am getting a dsl backup setup to run in conjunction with the high speed cox cable just in case something ever goes down.

I also missed out on some deliveries. I haven’t gotten my bedroom furniture or my dining room table/chairs as of yet. The movie room stuff came in on like 6 pallets today, and is taking up pretty much my entire garage. It should be a pretty sweet setup, there will be a 4 seater stadium seat type thing in the back on a riser, with a 3 seater in front of it, obviously pointed towards the projector. There is a perfect room upstairs for this and I am looking forward to getting it all set up.

I need to get some paint touch ups done, which kinda sucks as it stinks up the house for a few days, but I am considering taking a trip with Haley somewhere beachy before I settle in to play all the tournaments this summer. She is still not 21 so it’s not that great bringing her out to vegas, so we are thinking Hawaii right now, and I have been looking at a few different places people have recommended to me. It is kind of a bummer that my first trip to Hawaii will have to be short, I would really like to go and stay for 2 weeks and learn to surf a bit, but a good 4-5 day trip laying on the beach should be quite relaxing nonetheless, so it will be hard to complain.

Something else I would really like to try is kite boarding. I have read up a bit about this, and watched some videos, and it looks awesome. I had a buddy in high school that used to do it a lot, and he really loved it as well and always talked about how cool it was, and I never really paid him any mind because I didn’t even really know what it was. I probably wont have enough time to do this on the upcoming trip, but hopefully sometime soon.

For the last 6 days I have been eating a ton. I don’t really have a diet program setup to follow strictly mainly because I am not in my house yet, and it is really tough to make all your own meals when you are staying on someone’s couch, in a hotel, or just bouncing around wherever. It makes it super difficult to maintain a rigorous diet program, so I have just been trying to eat as much clean carbs and protein as I can, and trying to avoid the white breads, pastas, sodas, whatever.

I have been in the gym every day for the last 6 days for an hour and a half. Normally my workouts last no longer than 30 minutes, and I circuit train and get everything in relatively quickly, while getting a decent cardio workout because of the no rest circuit setup. However, this last week I have been doing straight sets with the goal of really focusing on increasing my strength. I said I wanted to bulk up to 205 or so in the next month, and I don’t think it is out of the question.

Today I weighed in at a nice 194.6 on the 24hr fitness scale, which I would presume is fairly accurate. This is awesome imo, and I am feeling great. It is entirely possible that my weight gain can be attributed to dehydration previously, with the super dry weather in vegas or something, I am really not sure, but it seems like I am gaining weight very fast, and am definitely feeling stronger already. I did some calf and other leg workouts I haven’t really done in years, and I was really feeling it yesterday and today. I rolled out of bed yesterday and collapsed as my legs locked up and I couldn’t really move for a good 5 minutes. I spent the rest of the day limping around stretching constantly and getting funny looks everywhere I went.

Something else I am doing that I have never done before is the stairmaster. Now, I know how this sounds, ooooo great my mom does that awesome. That is what I thought at first. Then I got on it, on power level 5, and wanted to die after 6 minutes. Somehow I managed to get through it on the first day for the full 15 minutes, and have been SLOWLY increasing resistance over the last few days. Today I did 16 minutes at power level 6 for the first ¾ then 7 8 and 9 for the last stretch. I really like how I feel when I get done doing it as I want to collapse. 24hr has all the cardio stuff upstairs, so they make you limp down the stairs after doing a tough workout. Seems like an accident waiting to happen, but what do I know.

Something else that seems odd.. I am getting hit on by men wayyyy more often than seems normal. Normally I find this fairly flattering, but it seems like I am emitting some radiant gay aura over the last couple days. I don’t FEEL gay, but perhaps I am sending the signals. I have been working out with mikey the last week or so, and we managed to encounter a pretty fun situation.

We were doing some kinda cable press thing over in the corner of the gym, and I notice a 35ish guy with a cutoff shirt kinda eying us. Mikey notices it too and says ‘this guy has been giving me sex eyes for the last 3 weeks’. I say haha whatever ur full of shit, but then notice that he really IS giving sex eyes in our direction. He is ALSO slowly making his way machine by machine over to our location. He finally gets close enough to talk to us and is like ‘hayyyyyy are u guys brotherssss?? That’s like, sooooo coooool that u guys are working out together!!!’ and im just like ‘no’ and walk to the water fountain trying to suppress my laughter, while mikey has less success.

Honestly I felt pretty bad, but I mean, wtf can I say. It is clear that he wasn’t just trying to strike up a random conversation and make a weight room friend from my perspective, though I have been wrong before. This guy was also kinda sketchy looking, and I dno I just got a bad vibe from him. Anyways I didn’t see him again after this, so I didn’t think too much of it.

Later on at the smoothie factory place, the guy behind the counter was actually blatantly flirting with me. I was actually pretty flattered, and humored him with smiles and a healthy $1.25 tip. I think it may be that men are more forward in LV and I just haven’t really taken a notice to it before, and it is quite different than in texas where I guess its not ‘ok’ to be gay or whatever. I am quite certain that I have never been hit on by a guy in texas, but I can count at least 7 separate instances this week alone where this has happened in LV. I am not really sure where I am going with this, but it was just an observation I made, and felt like I should share it with you all. I told Haley about this and I think she got slightly jealous.

I haven’t played any poker since plo the other day, and have just been kinda taking it easy. I am not sure if I will play much at all in the next couple weeks leading up to the series, as I really want to take a nice little break and relax a bit. I am super stressed out with all of these moving pains, and feel like they just aren’t taking me seriously because I am not a 40 year old accountant or something. I guess I can understand it somewhat, but I mean, I have 3 years of verifiable income and am putting 22% down on the house, I really don’t see what else matters.

Anyways, enough venting about house stuff. Everyone is coming out in the next 2 weeks or so to get ready for the series. There is also ftops going on, and the 2500 main event is going down on my bday. I don’t really care about bdays, but it would kinda suck to be bummed busting in that, so I may not play it. There is also this 25k HU tourney going down on the 24th iirc. I would REALLY like to play this, but I am not sure if my trip will interfere with the date. I am DEFINITELY not going to play a 25k HU tourney on hotel internet while I am trying to enjoy Hawaii.

My parents are coming into town on the 26th, my mom has some sort of conference, and they want to check out my house. For my dads bday I got him great seats to see Love, as he is a huge beatles fan, and we are going to that on the 29th before the first event starts. Hopefully I will also get to play a few rounds of golf with my dad while he is here. My mom really wants to go to bed bath and beyond and help me pick out all the little things like plates, glasses, silverware, sheets, towels, and whatever other small things are required for comfortable living. This is absolutely fine with me as I don’t really want to go buy all this stuff by myself, and it is always good to have a female opinion on things like that.

Tomorrow im going to wake up, go work out, and then try to see if I can get into my house. I had a ton of stuff delivered to a friends house and I would imagine he is getting sick of having 15 boxes sitting in his garage. Hopefully I will be able to pick most of that stuff up and transport it over to my place and at least leave it in the garage or something until the money goes through and I can officially move in. That’s all I got for now

hawaii: lying on the beach for a couple of days at waikiki gets boring imo. It's basically a bunch of japanese people incapable of tanning trying their damnest. I would go to waikiki for 2 days max for 2 hours of surfing, some tanning, and the shopping at ala moana mall (highest grossing mall in the world per square feet i think).

the beauty of hawaii is in the local spots: 1) pick up a hiking book when you get there, and find some easy and nice trails to do since you got a date. Takes about 3 hours round trip and you get gorgeous views of honolulu + ocean with your heavy breathing the only noise up top.

2) there is this amazing local beach...i can't remember the name right now but i can ask my relative if you want. You canoe out to this tiny circular island and the waves come crashing in on both sides as you're trying to land, making a nice 15 feet bellagio type show. You have to time your landing otherwise the two waves will crash and knock you right off the canoe. Then you have a nice picnic on the island.

If you do get to Hawaii, bypass Oahu and fly direct to the Big Island or Kauai. Kauai is the most laid back. Check out the Grand Hyatt on the South shore in Poipu. Just down the road from a premier kite surfing spot- Mahalauupu Beach. call when you get here, I need poker tutoring asap...lol

Kauai is the island you want to go to.
Check out Hanalei Bay(princeville resort is good, but renting a house in the bay is great), the bay is fantastic, you can hike at the end of the road, and pine trees is good beachbreak for surf. Waimea Canyon on the west side is insane (Hawaiian grand canyon)

Weight training for muscle mass

Don't try and hit 205 that quick mate 10lbs in a month is too quick and not alot of muscle mass more fat accumilation and water rentention than anything else.

To make the most of your workouts make sure you have a shake after training consiting of WPI (Whey protein isolate) 30-40g and simple sugars such as dextrose/glucose 50-60g which will stimulate your insulin levels and push the protein into your muscles to start the repairing process asap.

Also keep your cardio to a minimum so you don't burn to many cals which are required for putting on the muscle make sure it's after training too, to maximise the fat buring process from glycogen depletion.

if you need any tips shout me a msg as i practice what i preach http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=619617004

May 12, 2008

So it is 7:15am in the city of Las Vegas. At one point in my life I would be winding down from a long night of debauchery, but today I am just waking up to go close on my house. Now, this situation is probably slightly different than normal. Technically I am not supposed to be IN the house until closing, which will probably go down around 1 PM today, but I have scheduled delivery of 8 different things or so, including furniture, washer/dryer, fridge, computer equipment, etc.

I worked out some sort of arrangement where I can sit inside the house all day and wait for the deliveries. I really loathe the way ups/fedex have their systems set up. They call you in advance say, 2 days early, and have a pre recorded message saying ‘your delivery will take place on xxxx between 8am and 7pm’. Really? An 11 hour window? Where if I am not there you leave a note on my door and give me another 11 hour window? That makes sense. Let me block out my ENTIRE day so I can wait on a delivery from you, thanks! I will sit in my empty house with no internet and read a nice book, hopefully close, and hopefully get all of the delivery items in on time.

Personally I don’t think this is a very effective business model, but when the competition is doing the EXACT same thing, it doesn’t really matter. If they don’t really compete with each other in this regard, and they are content with the business they are getting, it really has no effect if they try to improve their methods. This may have been fine 20 years ago, but today with all the methods of communication, texting, cell phones *gasp*, whatever, they should be able to communicate EXACTLY when your shit will arrive so you can leave the office, come back from running errands, whatever, and be able to sign for your delivery. It makes absolutely no sense whatsoever to require the recipient to wait around in an 11 hour window, it is just pure laziness.

Regardless of the delivery inconvenience, I am very excited about getting all new stuff and setting up a new house. Somehow it is exciting in that first day at school sort of way, but lots bigger. I am also extremely excited about having my own bed in Las Vegas. So often I end up sleeping on Alan’s couch or in a guest bedroom, or renting a hotel room. This is all fine and good, but it is hard to get a great nights sleep in someone else’s place, with people running up and down the halls wasted yelling about their craps victories and defeats. On the bed topic, I HIGHLY recommend everyone get rid of their current setup and buy a tempurpedic celebrity bed. I have the grand bed in TX, but I took a 15 minute nap on the celebrity bed and it melted underneath me in bedular ecstacy.

The last 4 days have been pretty solid otherwise. I have worked out SUPER hard each day, driving 20 minutes away to 24hr fitness. This helps me I think as I feel like I am wasting time unless I put in a ton of effort and really try to get everything out of the workout. I even did the stairmaster for 15 minutes after finishing each day, and played some basketball with some tall asian kids that were ridiculous. It had been a while since I played, and it definitely showed, my shot was wayyyyy off, though I suppose it usually is right after lifting. Anyways it was fun and I am feeling great after the workouts.

As far as my personal goals for lifting, I have decided not to cut right away because I feel I would be too skinny. A week ago I weighed in at 186, 11.5% bf at 6’2. This is definitely acceptable, especially considering how easy it is to be lazy and sit at the comp all day, but I definitely want to make improvements because being in good shape and staying healthy definitely helps for being able to focus for long periods of time while playing poker, and you just FEEL better throughout the day. I am going to try to bulk up to around 202-205 in the next 4 weeks or so, then cut down to 190 and try to maintain that. I have no desire to look like a gigando bodybuilder, but I don’t want to be a beanstalk either. I am going to modify my diet a bit and focus more on weight gain stuff so my muscles can build faster. I have done quite a bit of research and it is apparently super duper hard to gain muscle and maintain body fat or lower it, so it seems as though I must keep eating, and will try to get 3k calories a day. Tragic, I know.

I did a bunch of other stuff in the last 3 days that I want to talk about, but I am in a hurry and have to go be a slave to delivery services.

" I have done quite a bit of research and it is apparently super duper hard to gain muscle and maintain body fat or lower it"

Hello performance enahancers.

Gaining 15-20 pounds in four weeks naturaly isnt very realistic, not to burst your bubble. Gaining 5 pounds of muscle in four weeks would be good. It sounds, like most people, that you are trying to make this happen to fast. You cant go from the .01 .02 to the 100 200 in a few months. I am struggling through a transfromation right now so reading your "lifting" section of you blog is interesting.

My moms in management at UPS and I asked her what the difficulty was and essentially copy pasted her your UPS rant. Maybe this can help shed light on the other side of the situation and bring everyone one step closer to solving the residential package communication crisis.

This is with respect to residential deliveries. And it is true the UPS and FedEx are interested in this business, residential business is expensive. The gas prices are high and it's a small number of packages being delivered to each house. With commercial business, there are usually more pieces (packages) delivered per stop so the cost to deliver those packages (UPS Cost) is lower.

The drivers are on timed routes; and they need to have all business packages delivered before they can start working the residential areas. The drivers are under intense pressure (from UPS) to get packages delivered; their trucks are jammed w packages. They hardly have enough time to run to the door to drop off the packages, much less try to contact people the day of to let them know their packages will be delivered at x hours. People don't realize the kind of things that happen to drivers that throw them off their planned time and routes.

(This may not be practical in your case) Customers can have their package delivered to their company and not to the residence. Also, you can request packages be held at the customer counter for pick-up. But what a lot of customers are doing is shipping their package to the nearest UPS Store - the hours are very convenient and there are a zillion stores worldwide.

I do not know why UPS or FedEx began offering the voice notification service; I did not realize it was an 11-hour window. The communication methods are there but the world is less than predictable. It's a no-win situation because if the driver was able to make that telephone call (not all drivers have cell phones and most would not have time to use it) what would they do if they reached vmail; how many people can't get personal calls at work; on... and on.. If they did promise a time but missed it for any reason listed in the book of Murphy's law -- it would be another issue.

Watertown is a small center.... and we deliver over 12,000 packages every day. I don't know how many of those are residential; but I do know there are a lot of them. It can be very challenging. You can get a lot of info tracking on line; and UPS drivers are required to have all residential packages delivered before they end their day.

Lol at the long comment no ones going to care about…

I have to agree with the poster who said 15 lbs in 4 weeks is a lofty goal naturally. In an untrained individual with very good genetics, maybe, but I suspect even then it will be a lot of water and a fair amount of fat.

Unless you were going the drug route. In which case after the initial receptor saturation in the first few weeks, a good responder can gain 15-30 lbs in a month or so on thier first cycle. Just be aware that you'll never really want to come off, etc...

" I have done quite a bit of research and it is apparently super duper hard to gain muscle and maintain body fat or lower it,"

Erroneous...I had been into bodybuilding for 7 years and this is really about genetics and what you choose to do. 99% of the guys you see in Muscle & Fitness magazine are so drugged up on roids and they walk around all fat 95% of the time and get cut for competition. I have a high metabolism and was lucky to put on 5lbs of lean muscle a YEAR. I was 5'6" at 6-7% bodyfat and lucky to get 5 solid pounds of muscle a year due to high metabolism.

May 10, 2008

Well, I haven’t done a blog in a few days, so figure I should make a post. I was supposed to close on my house today, which was pretty much the reason I got out here so early, however the loan agent and my real estate agent somehow managed to not answer their phones today, and not return my calls. I am slightly sketched out by it, though I don’t think it should be a problem, I am still very annoyed that they haven’t bothered to try to get a hold of me and let me know what the deal is.

Last couple days I have been playing a bit online and not doing so hot. Pieces haven’t been going well either, which kinda sucks. I have been playing the 2-4 plo games a bit recently because they have been quite good. There a few new guys that seem to monkey around a lot and are hyper agro which makes it good to run some short stacks thru and try to run them up.

I have done pretty well at it, but since I have been trying to lower variance have been selling small pieces and getting pieces in return, which I kinda like, as its fun to sweat friends and have a piece while ur just kinda watching a movie and don’t feel like playing or something. I also like winning my friends money, and it makes me happy so that is a def plus.

This morning I woke up and went to 24hr fitness and got in a great workout. Did the same thing yesterday and really felt great. The one I went to is about 20 minutes from where I am staying, so when I got there I really wanted to make it worthwhile driving that far, and I felt great. We even got a decent little 3v3 basketball game going after lifting, and that was a lot of fun. I am definitely out of cardio shape and was breathin pretty hard and in some pain after 2 games. I definitely want to start playing more, at least a few times a week, and I think we have a good number of people interested and we could really make this work well.

After lifting I tried nonstop to get a hold of my agent and broker, but somehow neither decided to answer their phones or call me back. I left a pretty nasty message with my agent today, and might end up feeling slightly bad about it tomorrow, but I mean really how can they not even attempt to get a hold of me? I haven’t even received an email. I wouldn’t care that much if closing got pushed back a day or 2, but I have lots of delivery furniture and stuff coming in on Monday and need to get all of this taken care of.

Anyways, regardless of the real estate mishaps, I was feeling great from the workout and got home and loaded up some plo tables. There were some decent games going and I felt like running some stacks up. This plan worked out great for about 5 minutes, then I proceeded to be down 95k. At this point I felt like a huge waste of life because instead of closing on a house, I lost the down payment to it. Not exactly the best use of time.

Not in any particular order, but here are some of the pricier hands I played today..

http://www.pokerhand.org/?2587370 – this one is pretty standard, not a lot I can do other than just jam the flop, usually have decent equity and get folds sometimes, and there is the off chance I am ahead if one of em monkeys some kinda 654 type hand.

http://www.pokerhand.org/?2587312 – I think this one is standard too, its pretty rigged phil had pretty much the worst possible thing for me to be up against, and I didn’t manage to bink it. Having a K and a T dead definitely hurts me since I have an A in hand as well, whatever.

http://www.pokerhand.org/?2587247 – again, super standard with how wide he is potting the flop, gutter and nfd you will be hard pressed to do anything. All of these hands are super standard as far as I’m concerned, so just running bad I guess to start. Sucks also that my 8 is dead cuz steve has the higher gutter.

http://www.pokerhand.org/?2587444 – this one is pretty much the biggest cooler in the world vs his range. Not a lot to say really about these hands.

http://www.pokerhand.org/?2587564 – I managed to build my stack up finally and got into a pretty interesting spot. I think a lot of ppl would reraise here pf, but stinger and ppl were squeezing pretty light, so I was planning on just calling and then potting over a reraise hoping steve would cold call. That MIGHT be a mistake, but if it is it cant be by much, and im pretty sure its good. Anyways, pretty standard to just pot get it in on the flop I think, and I managed to win a pretty big flip vs stinger.

http://www.pokerhand.org/?2587602 – I felt like playing deeper today mainly because I was stuck and was on mini heater and wanted to run it up, and managed to get the nuts on the flop. We are definitely getting stacks in no matter how I play the hand, as this is pretty much the most gigantic cooler in history, but I felt like I played it super cool and if he had a much weaker hand I feel like I would have gotten him to stack off with quite a few hands. Stinger is super good at firing more than 1 barrell on boards like this, and we were discussing this earlier in the day, so its super unlucky I actually had a giant hand here and not something like QJTx or top pair and clubs or something. This is the biggest pot ive played in a couple months, so I was happy it went my way.

http://www.pokerhand.org/?2587643 – this was pretty much the last hand I played on the sesh. My stack got wayyy too deep for me to be comfortable with on that other table, and was really only 1 tabling this and didn’t feel like playing anymore. Having phil and cogaz behind me BOTH covering made me kinda scared, I am not super confident about my deep stack plo game, definitely nowhere near enough to play 200-400 that deep, much less 25-50 really.

I finished the sesh up about 65 or so, and was pretty happy with that especially since I was buried to start. I got back from dinner and checked 2p2 and there were some pretty gigando pots. Steve seemed to tilt a bit and ran bad to lose like 6 huge pots in a row, and stinger added his name to the top 10 pots of online poker list once more. I am not sure who the big winner of the day was, but when I left cogaz was definitely up the most, so it was probably him.

After I got done I went to swish with Mikey and had an amazing dinner. I can’t go into enough detail about how much I love that place. Everyone really should check it out because it is super awesome and pretty reasonably priced. Just got back in from that and am pretty tired, woke up like 3 hours earlier than I would have naturally because I was PLANNING on buying a house today, so im pretty tired and am going to get some sleep. Hopefully I can get in touch with SOMEONE tomorrow and get this house deal figured out.

Oh I just read some responses to my last blog. Ummm, as far as diet stuff, I don’t really feel like getting into it right now, but I am pretty confident I know what kinda plan works and how to go about it, but thanks to everyone for all the ideas and thoughts and stuff. A month ago or so I broke down a day by calorie of what I was eating, and if you go back and search that’s a pretty decent fat burning diet as far as I can tell.

Also, a few mention Taleb and his silly books. I have read both of these, and there is definitely some super great stuff in them, but I find reading Taleb is just a maddening experience. He comes across as the most pompous stuck up man imaginable. His standard line is something like ‘Luckily for me I am the smartest person in the world, as well as ridiculously good looking. I also work out a ton and am in amazing shape. Did I mention how smart I am and how much I know about everything? I don’t think I did so I am going to do that again. I AM THE BEST AT LIFE’. Now, I don’t mind this generally, but it really got tiresome after I finished black swan. Don’t get me wrong, Taleb really is a genius and his books are definitely very good and worth checking out, his writing style just tilts the shit out of me.

you've mentioned meditating a couple times. and you've also mentioned your roving mind a couple times :) i've been working out in that arena lately and found great substance in 'the power of now' by eckhart tolle. he talks a lot about the roving mind, and how our thoughts based in the future/past can stop us from being at ease and/or enjoying the day. i highly recommend it. it is not a cure-all, but it will definitely be worth your time to read it. best of luck....

PLO

David,

I'm a big fan of your NL videos. Your vids are actually my favorite. We think along the same lines. I read your blog and saw some of the big pots you played in PLO and was surprised on how many big pots you played out of position. Just curious, if you flopped a naked nut straight in PLO with a flush draw on board, and there was a bet and a call, would you just try to jam as much money on the flop as possible?

WHy losing session bother you and addict

Come on you know why that 15k losing session burns you.....your comeptitiveness.....That is half the draw to the game...Outplaying someone is half the rush of a winning show down.....Raking a big pot is the other half.....That is why this game is sooo lethal....I would venture to say if played 3 heads up matches for ZERO money and I won 2/3 you would still have a bitterness in that you lost..I always do.......

As far as a wandering mind goes......it's a part of the addictive personality...THe internet is addictive.....I suffer from it. I used to have Yahoo as my home page and every...F-in time I would see "Kid removes Farve Jersey for fiest time in 4 years" and 30 min later I finally run my search.......CAse in point I do not know how I got to DAvid B.'s Blog in the first place

Yo,
Honestly before you came to Cardrunners I didn't know who you were, but I gotta say, from what I've learned of you, I'm impressed. You are basically doing what I plan to do in the next few years, so hopefully I can follow in your footsteps soon enough.

May 07, 2008

I have written up 3 blog entries since yesterday, none of which I am going to post. There is a lot of shit spinning around in my head about a lot of things, and I’m glad that I got to put them into words, though I don’t think it would be beneficial for anyone if I actually posted it online, apparently I have an adverse effect on people that are too sensitive to my ‘material’.

Anyhoo, I want to talk about something that I find odd, that I think a lot of people seem to encounter, including many of my close friends. Sometimes when I have a truly awful day, or am just kinda miserable doing the poker thing, I say I am going to take a really long break, or I need to take a month off and go travel, or go build houses in Africa or something for a few weeks.

I always say stuff like this, and in my mind at the time I am sooooooo ready to do it, however the very next day I wake up, brush my teeth, make my morning sandwich, then get on the computer. Damn near every single day I do this. Then I sit around for an hour letting my food digest while dreading the workout I am about to do. I definitely feel better after I get my workout in, but then I am back in the same rhythm as the previous day, and I am just sitting in front of the computer, usually not even playing.

When I do build up the nerve to sit on some tables, I’m usually not really enjoying myself, and I am just kinda forcing myself to play hands. I don’t think this is conducive to getting better and improving my game. I actually enjoyed losing to takechip yesterday because it made me want to beat him very badly, so I spent an hour or two in pokertracker breaking down his game and trying to figure out what I can do to really stomp him. This was good for me I think, and it actually made me want to play some poker.

Ok I got off topic there because my brain is running in circles at the moment, but back to what I was saying about taking a break. Why can’t I get online, book flights to [insert faroff awesome destination that will be life changing experience] and just DO it. Just get out there, away from the computer, away from poker, and really shake up my life. There really isn’t a better time to do something like this, and I should be taking advantage of it. Why does it seem so hard to do so? I am not alone in this either, so I will speak as ‘us’ henceforth. How come WE can’t seem to do this? Certainly there are a few of us who have done these things, but how come it seems so hard to just get away from the computer?

I have taken a few trips in the last year for a week or so where I didn’t have a computer, one being PCA in the Bahamas. Though I was surrounded by poker players, I spent the majority of my time hanging out with Haley, CTS and his gf, and a bunch of other cool people and just really got to take a nice break. I went to the Virgin Islands for a week without a computer and spend the whole time laying on the beach sipping fruity drinks and just relaxing, and it was awesome. I guess I don’t really know what the hell im talking about as far as not taking trips blah blah, but I want to take something longer than a week, I want to spend a month exploring a new country, getting to experience a new culture.

In 4 hour work week, Tim Ferriss talks a lot about taking a lot of ‘mini retirements’ which are extended vacations spread throughout your life. Granted, he has a lot more money than me, and has some pretty sicko passive income setup, but this kind of stuff isn’t really out of our grasp. Why can’t I just take 3 months off, go live in Argentina and learn how to salsa? Or spend an American winter in new Zealand climbing mountains, white water rafting, and really getting out into the gorgeous country?

How come I strap myself to this fucking computer and waste so much time? I mean honestly, I don’t even put in that many hands. How come I can’t get myself to really focus when I am on the computer, and really grind out the hands, then spend my time away from the computer really living it up enjoying life? What is so hard about that? Though I think about this kinda stuff all the time, I can’t seem to make a change. I am not really sure how to go about it either, but I think its something I want and need.

Something I was just discussing with joey, we were getting fairly philosophical for a little while before coming back to earth, anyways, something that I find very odd is that I am very ‘aware’ of my perceptions of wins and losses, but can’t ‘accept’ them. Let us say that I play 2k hands at 5-10 for 5 pt. I am aware that I could actually be stuck 15k over this period of time, though my EV is 2k. I am also aware that I could be up 15k. However, when I am DOWN 15k, I have trouble accepting the fact that this is just noise. I am aware that it is noise, and if I truly make 5pt at 5-10, then this is just a blip and over long term is completely meaningless.

However, I can’t accept this. Let us say that I am stuck 9k after playing for an hour. Now, I am aware that if I play 1k hands an hour, it would take me 9 hours to truly make this up. However, I can’t ACCEPT that, so I continue to play chasing it in an attempt to get unstuck, and I expect to get unstuck in a few hours, even though if I actually step back and look at it, my EV over the next say, half hour, is only 500 bucks, even if I am trying to make all 9k back. Why do I think this way? I am aware of so many things like this in the poker world, yet my body refuses to accept it.

Let’s say that I have a piece of a friend playing 200-400. This isn’t the softest of games, so let’s say his pt is only 3 or so. For the period of time I have a piece, I will be LUCKY if he plays 500 hands. This means that HIS ev is 12k. If I have say, a quarter, MY ev is 3k. However, whenever some kind of piece sharing like this goes on, there is often 150-200k (sometimes more) being made or lost. I am well aware that MY ev here is 3k, and am well aware that I am often winning or losing 50k. However, when my friend runs bad and loses, I can’t accept it in my body. I want to keep playing and get it back, though the true ev of that would take a very long time.

I accept the fact that we lost, and ship money over, or happily accept the fact that we booked a win, and feel pretty good about the deal, but I really think I have trouble accepting the actual swings of it. It is crazy that the EV really isn’t all that high, and in all honesty, for me, is it worth it? Say my buddy makes me 50k. I am super happy for sure, but it lasts for about 10 minutes, then I forget about it, and sometimes even feel bad and feel like I owe him a good piece of me when I play next. Say I lose during the time I give him a good piece. Then I feel like an idiot piece of shit because he gave me 50k but I lost him [insert number], even though HIS ev in my spot might have only been 3k (which I am aware of), my body seems to have trouble accepting that when I win or lose him 40-50k, it is just noise.

Another thing that I find odd is that if I make 50k or 150k, it doesn’t really seem to make a difference in my happiness level. Same thing if I lose 50k or 150k, I won’t really be THAT much more unhappy losing 150k, though I am sure I will be slightly more upset, it will probably be a miniscule amount. If I start off down 150k, and finish down 50k, I will feel bad, but not that bad, but if I start off UP 150k then finish up 50k, I will feel pretty miserable. This is just a random thought that I threw in, but I am pretty sure I am not alone in this either.

I am not really sure what I am even talking about anymore, and I don’t think I did a good job at all of explaining it. Often I have trouble translating my thoughts into words, which is part of the reason I wanted to start a blog to begin with, to help me improve in this regard. Hopefully some of you will understand what I am getting at, and this will help you somehow. I am definitely working on it, though I am not really sure what I can really do to improve. I have spent a lot of time trying to meditate and think about this little game the way I am supposed to as a poker professional.

I am trying to better ACCEPT the noise for what it is, just noise; it’s not real. It is easy to get caught up following the ups and downs, but none of it matters; the long term matters. I am well aware of this. I suppose my next step is to accept the fact that I am aware, and figure out a way to accept that. God im an idiot.

Also quick edit, good plo games were running, so I felt like playing!
http://www.pokerhand.org/?2574557 – like…. Way to go benyamine, you got it in really good vs my range. Sicko thing im still 57.5% to win on turn. Sooooo terrible. Oh well. Pretty fitting I suppose ;)

I see a lot of "me" in the struggles you write about. I took a 6 mos hiatus from playing poker mostly to just clear my head but also to figure out if there was something else out there that I would want to at least attempt to do as a "career" of sorts even if only for a few years. This decision was loosely based on the assumption that I would like poker a lot better if I wasn't 100% dependent upon it. Instead of my job, it will be the fun/challenging game that it used to be. I'll probably take more time to learn other games besides hold'em which just adds up to more fun and more challenge.

Maybe this is something for you to consider. Just take some time and think about what you might like to do. For me it was as simple as thinking "I like to work on a computer." That led me to computer aided drafting/design.

I think about the same things almost everyday. I think the whole traveling thing is very hard. It's hard to just get up and go, and thats exactly how you need to do it. When you sit around and think about everything you want to do, you end up doing nothing. Eventually you just have to DO IT. It's also very hard cause no one wants to travel alone and its hard to find others to go with you. Things would be much easier, if there was a person, who was willing to go/do anywhere/anything with you.

The human mind gets far too comfortable with what its used to. You have to push yourself, to step beyond your comfort zones, and out of familiarity.

I've always wanted to travel/adventure more, but not alone. And I have yet to find someone to do such things with.

Wow, this is so sick, It's exactly how i feel; except for the shitload of money and me wanting to go to the US because I already live in Argentina :D

I tried working at a regular job for a change, but it didnt work, I came back to poker in 3 months (maybe because money in reg jobs are is nothing compare to poker). But now, 4 months later, Im struggling again and forcing myself to put hands in.

You have the best blog on the web, I really enjoy reading it.

You have some serious mental problems with swings that seem to manifest worse like everyday. Take a break, fly to fucking 10 buck 2 tomorrow. What's so hard? You have money, you don't have any committments, so just fucking go somewhere and clear your head. I think that your problem is unlike most people. A 100nl player just can't go clear his\her head for like a month. You can go whereever the fuck you want, whenever the fuck you want. Just book a ticket and do it, it's not hard.

edit- I hope I didn't sound like a serious hater\douchebag, I just think that you definitely need to take a break, and there's absolutely no excuse not to. You want to be in top form for wsop, and sitting around feeling depressed about life, poker, etc, is just going to make you play worse there to.

just want to say i really enjoy reading your blog. your videos are great, keep it up.

seems like you hit the mid-life crisis in the 20's because you've accomplished, monetarily speaking, what most people work their whole lives for. it's a funk where all you need to do is stay positive, make sure to pull yourself out of your comfort zone as is mentioned above, and just live life. i mean life itself is a grind just as it is at the tables. happiness takes work, just like building a roll takes work. sometimes reading a good book that explores what your thinking is always nice too. talk to some people find a good read, it's good mental exercise.

I believe that something you can do in this regard, is to schedule your time better. What I mean is that: computer = job, so stop being unproductive infront of your computer! I sure know that I get tired when I sit in front of the computer just messing around with random shit. It basically drains you for energy. So when you finally decide to play, you probably don't have that much energy anymore cause you just been sitting there for hours wasting energy....

Guess what I'm trying to say is that maybe you should try to seperate work and your freetime. So spend as little time as possible in front of your computer when your not playing

Oh this Won X then lost X*3 is killing me too.
There was some study about human psicology that shown that people are more risk averse when they can WIN money, but they are less risk averse when they can LOSE money they already have (had).
Ex. one would take 1:10 chances to win \$100 rather than 1:3 chances to win \$100 if loss would net them minus \$30.
I guess thats human nature. I recently started considering hiring psycologist to help to change this "natural" attitude, because its ruining me even more than you.

Totally understand this mentatlity from my idiot days playing blackjack and roulette online (IDIOT IDIOT IDIOT THING TO DO). I'd feel strangely better having comeback from being £2k down and ending up even than being £1k up and ending up only £500 up. I somehow felt that I'd "lost" £500 in the second instance and managed to "win" £2k off the casino in the first instance. Crazy. Same thing applies to poker, if I'm a 3bb/100 winner at \$1/\$2 and lose a buy in my instinct is to foolishly go up a limit or two and play way to LAG to get it back quick when I know that what I should do is suck up the loss and grind it back and maybe hit some good cards along the way.

Such is the life of one whose natural instinct is to gamble.

Hey ho. Just saying you're not alone buddy.

I love your blog

David I really like your blog, because your willing to let us into the life of a poker player. You share the good the bad and the ugly which is great, and unlike 98% of other blogs. I also feel that 'confusion' your in, so I really hope your able to go on a break to prepare for the WSOP if you still intend on playing in it.

I also play poker, but obviously not professionally. I want to know if its just me or not, but does David Benyamine suck or what? He seems to have a horseshoe the size of his belly up his arse.

Anyhow good luck and keep bloggin!

As soon as I read about the traveling paragraph I felt compelled to reply. I have thoughts daily about going on some adventure and have been reading the travel forum at 2p2 a lot lately. I've relied on online gambling/poker for the last 3 years and lets just say I live cheap and don't put in nearly enough effort as I have time to do. I'm pretty much just living day to day life the only advantage over a 'normal' person is I don't have to go do a job I don't want to. The problem is the job I chose to do I don't do enough lol so I don't really feel like I have the freedom I thought I once would when I got wrapped up in all of this.....ramblin.

I love the honesty in ur blog and even though Im on a lower level grinding 5/10 I have the same thoughts as u and since I live in Sweden I also have to worry about the fact that people despise pokerplayers here. May 7, 08 09:03:38

Just like your workout, travelling starts with that first step. You should start by visiting friends in far off locations. That makes it soooo much easier. But, to be honest, the best trips I have ever taken have been by myself. Its really awesome when you are alone in a completely foreign environment because you really find out who you are and the things that you want to do. For a person who has spent hours grinding and obviously stressing (playing poker for large amounts of loot is stressfull, period), a getaway is exactly what you need. It sounds crazy, but if you went to India or Vietnam (both extremely beautiful) or any place off the radar by yourself for a few weeks, you would really get a great recharge and a completely different perspective on yourself and life in general. Not to mention, great stories. Good luck!

May 7, 08 10:40:44

First of all, what people don't realize is just how difficult it is to REALLY CHANGE. A perfect example in your blog today is when you state "make my morning SANDWICH". You have been talking about losing weight and sound like it's something you feel is somewhat a top priority and yet you continue to eat bread, despite the advice you got about staying away from it (note I'm not talking about something extreme like fasting , etc.). As an aside here. since we've tangentially gone down the diet route, I would seriously recommend you reading about the "paleo" diet. But I digress. To make a change in one's life takes "WILL" and "COMMITMENT", which takes perseverance, endurance, experiencing frustrations and setbacks, etc. Now who really wants to go through all that shit? Answer-someone who really does want to change and not just talk about it. From your background you obviously have the tools (mental toughness, willpower, etc.) to make any change you want to make, but it does take commitment. Since you're interested in philosophical subjects (Tao Te Ching, Zen), I would recommend some books discussing samurai philosophy-this might give you some insight into some of the things that are bothering you. As I go off on a different tangent here, for someone who mocks the "Math" guys (I agree with your sentiment btw), how can you make generalizations about "2 EV", etc.? Just what is the "long run" for you poker savants?? 15,000, 150,000, 1,500,000, or 15,000,000 hands?? Who the fok really knows?? OK-so now I'm really TILTING. Don't even get me talking about you guys talking about their opponent's "Hand Ranges". especially Heads Up. Give me a break. As you have said in one of your vids, "everybody" tilts, and that can happen at any time. So if I'm playing you HU and I'm tilted and call your 4 bet with my 2 7 off, How the fok can you put me on a "hand range" when the flop comes 2 2 7????? By the way, is playing poker when your angry positive EV? I guess I'm in trouble, then. Or maybe the long run for me is 150,000,000,000,000,000 hands (I play everything optimally-I'm just RUNNING BAD!!). Ok, enough of my angry zen rant (is it possible for someone to be "zen" and "angry"?). Anyway, keep up the good blog and vids. Last piece of advice-if you keep eating bread and processed carbs, you'll grow man boobs and need a "BRO" or "MANSIERRE" (they're estrogenic).

u mention my 'diet' a lot without really knowing at all what you are talking about. this bothers me a lot when people make judgements based on nothing. the bread i use, which i use one slice of, has 13g of carbs, 6 of which are fiber, 4g of protein, 1g fat, and is pretty much the healthiest bread on the planet, and no nutritional scientist could possibly deem it unhealthy. I made a blog post a while ago breaking these things down. Sorry but u mention it more than once so felt like i should reply, i am very aware of what is involved in good nutritional habits, and i also accept them!

May 7, 08 18:06:04

David,
I apologize if I miscommunicated my "bread" comments. The last comments were jokingly directed at everybody that eats bread. I truly realize that you are thoughtful and diligent about your nutrition and fitness. But, despite the fact that your bread is supposedly healthy, I would like to play the devil's advocate. There are quite a few respected people that feel strongly that any "grains", especially wheat, are not the health food that most people believe them to be. For starters, grains are abundant in an ingredient called "phytates" (or phytic acid), which are actually considered "anti-nutrients". These anti-nutrients interfere significantly with the absorption of important minerals, including iron, calcium, magnesium, and zinc, to name a few. Some of these minerals (esp. zinc and magnesium) are critical to important hormone synthesis in the body, including our good friends testosterone and growth hormone. These hormones are hugely important in maintaining lean muscle mass, as well as a sense of well-being, confidence, etc. Also, some people feel strongly that grains trigger an immune response in most people (the extreme version of this is celiac disease, in which people get severe diarrhea when eating any grains). If an immune response is triggered, however subtle it might be, the body reacts by creating a stress response and secreting more adrenaline, etc. This stress response cause the stress hormone cortisol to be secreted, which in turn causes a cascade of events that affect the cells in our body. What happens then is that the insulin receptor sensitivities of the muscle and fat cells change dramatically, with the final upshot being that more foodstuffs get preferentially deposited in to the adipocytes (fat cells), versus the muscle cells. Not only that, but it becomes harder to mobilize that fat when trying to lose weight. They are blowing holes every day in the bullshit that a calorie is a calorie is a calorie, despite what food source it came from. The way to think about food is the hormonal effects that are triggered when you eat certain foods. That's why I mentioned the "paleo" diet. Go to http://www.earth360.com/diet_paleodiet_balzer.html to get the basic ideas about the diet. If it piques your interest, then you can visit other sources of info. Another good website is thepaleodiet.com, which goes in to more detail. You might also go to Amazon and check out some books like "Good Calories, Bad Calories" by Gary Taubes or "The No-Grain Diet", by Joseph Mercola or "Dangerous Grains" to name a few. As an aide, everybody thinks soy is a health food too.... Anyway, I'm sorry if I didn't express myself very well on the earlier post.

feeling wins vs losses

neurologically, people (and other animals) feel losses about 2.5x as much as equivalent gains. so if you lose \$10 and gain \$10, you'll feel badly overall.

when i was your age, i spent a year and a half bumming around southeast asia. highly recommended. i suggest buying a one-way ticket to bali. no need to go with someone; people make friends instantly on the road.

David what is your diet like? I would imagine you are trying to lose fat and gain muscle? Ncasso5 posts some great nutritional info in the general discussion which is refreshing because most people tend to spread poor infromation on the topic. PM me if you would like to discuss this. I have gone through several transformations in my life (am 26) and have had excellent results. One thing that should be taken into consderation is that a transormation diet is going to be different then your regular lifestyle diet. LOL @ the people trying to discourage working out. Transforming your body is alot like poker, very few people now how to accomplish their goals as it can be very complex.

I want to write this up while it’s fresh on my mind, I just finished playing takechip/flipokeher 6 table sesh of 25-50 for 2k hands. I started off really well, up like 18ish, then pretty much straight arrow downed 40k to finish down 22. I quit after the 5th time he stacked me in a row, felt kinda silly to continue at that point. He has seemingly done very well vs just about everyone, but I like playing super agro ppl and generally ill play anyone HU on 6 tables at 25-50. I will definitely play him again, probably tomorrow, but I just felt like I would start playing bad after the soul crushing 8 buyin drop in 1k hands.

I’m going to start off posting the biggest pots I lost, and then explain what I was thinking, hopefully it will help me out as much as you.

http://www.pokerhand.org/?2567111 – im going to start off with the worst, this is the last hand I played, and I quit pretty much right after. I mean if he flips it up im still supposed to call, but a lot of times im crushed by KJhh or something that I think I should just fold. This was point I realized I wasn’t playing A game so I decided to quit.

http://www.pokerhand.org/?2567145 – biggest pot I lost, he reraises a ton, and theres pretty much nothing I can ever do in this spot. He had been check raising a fair amount of pots after rr pf, so this is just an instastack off. I was hoping he would think I had air since he HAD been check raising lots of flops after rr, so I did a super gay 3 bet hoping hed rando spaz shove like AJ or whatever or 99, but he had AQ so meh.

http://www.pokerhand.org/?2567153 – this hand happened very early in the sesh, and is pretty much the biggest cooler in the world. I really like my overbet on the turn after he pots into me on the flop, I think it makes him do more spazzy stuff, but obv I get ownd again.

http://www.pokerhand.org/?2567163 – literally the second hand of our match, good to start things off right.

http://www.pokerhand.org/?2567167 – this was apparently the worst idea in history, I felt like he did have air sometimes, as well as maybe a king or KQ type stuff that he would fold. It is really tough for me to be bluffing in my spot, but I cant really expect him to fold an 8, so this might have been bad.

http://www.pokerhand.org/?2567181 – I feel like he has lots of flush combo draws, occasionally a worse ten etc often enough to make this a pretty standard play. I def get ownd a bit, but after taking my line I can’t really bet fold turn. I considered a check on turn but felt like he would in fact shove a lot of his 65 type stuff or diamond draws.

http://www.pokerhand.org/?2567190 – he likes to own me every time he 4 bets, he did make it smaller than normal, which made me consider a fold, but he does 4 bet more than anyone HU that I have played, so felt like I needed to get it in, cant be that bad I don’t think.

That’s pretty much it as far as hands that I lost, I’m going to include a couple fun ones to make myself feel better now, though there are only 2 that are nonstandard and fun, so those are ones u guys get to see.

http://www.pokerhand.org/?2566752 – this happened during the upswing, I really had trouble putting him on anything and he had weirdo timing, so clicked the call button. I think it’s actually a super cool hand, and I felt good afterwards.

http://www.pokerhand.org/?2566964 – I seem to do pretty well when I call with J high or bottom pair, it is always in spots where their hand just makes no sense at all. He bet and I was like wtf, bet makes no sense, so I did the J high own call. Too bad these are the only 2 hands that I could be super happy about the whole match.

Overall I feel like I played pretty well, and will try to put in another session vs him in the next couple days. I am getting all of my stuff together for my move, so not sure how much time I will have, but I def enjoy 6 tabling anyone HU, and there really isn’t too many people I wont play. Hopefully next time I can run like god and really crush him.
