CARDRUNNERS
What's Your Edge
My last day will be the 27th of Feb, and I will commence grinding on March 1 or 2. I plan on playing 90% cash games and 10% mtts. I will begin playing sats. for some Sunday majors, and the occasional FT 50/50 and stars 50/50 too. I plan on doing some playing on Bodog and playing their Sunday $100 MTT< as they usually have a massive 25K plus overlay....
Anyway, I am anxious, nervous, and excited to begin my "journey through the blinds".
Last night Dawn and I had a discussion about me playing poker full time. To summarize, I will be getting laid off soon from my Town of Mountain Village job, which is a good thing. The job has deteriorated since I began working here 2 years ago, and with the unemployment benefits that will come with the layoff will provide the stability I will need in beginning my professional poker career. I will only need to supplement my unemployment income for about 1K a month in the beginning to make what I make now, a shitty $20 (actually less) per hour. In crunching numbers, I should be able to make significantly more playing 8 tables of FR 100NL on stars, if I can maintain above a 3.4 pt/bb per 100 hands. I hope to run around 5pt/bb to make between $30-$40 per hour and play 40 hours a week minimum to start. I hope to get at least 5-6K in the first few months in our savings account to make up for any bad months that occur. Hopefully within 6 months I will be taking my shot at 200NL which would begin to provide some real income that could change my family's life, slowly. It seem strange saying that grinding 200nl could change our life, but if I could run 3.5pt/bb per 100 hands @ 200NL, play 8 tables, play about 350 hands an hour, that would equate to 1pt/bb @ 200nl = $4, 4 x 3.5 pt/bb = $14 x 3.5 (350/100) = $49 per hour. $49 per hour x 8 hours a day = $392 x 5 days a week = 1960 x 48 weeks (hey I need some time off
) = $94, 080 per year, plus rakeback/VIp programs and whatever Mtts I can make money in. This is a conservative estimate and a attainable win rate.
I will not approach this with money goals, although that is the ultimate reason we play, but I will dedicate myself to completely learning how other think, play, and succeed in NLHE FR and carve out my own existence in poker history.
gl me!

Don't forget about taxes.
\$94,080 X .72 (28% Tax Bracket) = \$67,737.6

I would also simply divide your estimate by 2. Most poker players that go pro find that they win half the \$'s they estimated before they left their job. If you are happy with the revised amount then go for it.

I play this way far too often. I need to establish a pattern to analyzing each decision and not fall into this alternative tilt category.
Along with this, I need to always go into a session with a positive attitude. Forget running bad last session, this whole week, and entire month, etc...know that all decisions that will present themselves to you will have an answer that I CAN find; there are pots i will win, there are sessions I will crush, I will make good decisions and have positive results...I am moving forward in my game!
I will take a few days off to cool down and try to get a couple things in line for my Full House, home service business i am going to start.
I also am going to have to get a new computer, as my desktop has served its time...
Hopefully a couple days off will help me shake the feeling of being cursed in poker and come back with a fresh attitude....

... and they decimate my stack. 2 days in a row at UB i have found just the player I need at my PLO table, reckless, loose, bluffs, and calls down lite. what do i do, I get bluffed and bluff when an OBV OESD hits the river and get looked up by top 2 pair.
Lesson: When you find your huckleberry, take them to value town, slow play monsters in HU situations, and never, never bluff a bad player, especially in PLO where 2 pair is a "monster to some"
side note, second to last hand of a session I hold 10 J Q A ds, i open, villain 1 calls, villain 2 pops to $23 (playing .50/1 6m PLO), we both call. Villain 1 is kinda donkish, over aggressive and call down lite, flop comes down 89x, 2 to my sooted ace, so I am OE to the nuts and NFD, I lead pot, donk calls, board pairs 9 on turn, I lead villain 1 calls my all in with 3 nines, and they hold......I have to be like a 60% favorite as the villain had a gut shot to sucker str8, I have 4 overs and my draws to lost a 500 BB pot, that stung!
I look forward to trying out HM these holidays, and doing some skiing, then starting some coaching in FRNLHE 100 after the NY. My only hope for work, is to start my own Home Services (home management, home inspections, home repairs/remodels) and that is going to be my primary goal for 2009 outside poker. As far as poker goes, I would like to be a steady winner multi tabling 1/2 NLHE and PLO by this time next year. If I put my mind to it, do my due diligence in both fields, and really focus I feel like success in imminent.
Aside from that, I would like to lose 10 lbs (like us all), and grow with my family. Wishing everyone a happy holidays!
