2/12/09 Life and Poker Discussion with wife

Last night Dawn and I had a discussion about me playing poker full time. To summarize, I will be getting laid off soon from my Town of Mountain Village job, which is a good thing. The job has deteriorated since I began working here 2 years ago, and with the unemployment benefits that will come with the layoff will provide the stability I will need in beginning my professional poker career. I will only need to supplement my unemployment income for about 1K a month in the beginning to make what I make now, a shitty $20 (actually less) per hour. In crunching numbers, I should be able to make significantly more playing 8 tables of FR 100NL on stars, if I can maintain above a 3.4 pt/bb per 100 hands. I hope to run around 5pt/bb to make between $30-$40 per hour and play 40 hours a week minimum to start. I hope to get at least 5-6K in the first few months in our savings account to make up for any bad months that occur. Hopefully within 6 months I will be taking my shot at 200NL which would begin to provide some real income that could change my family's life, slowly. It seem strange saying that grinding 200nl could change our life, but if I could run 3.5pt/bb per 100 hands @ 200NL, play 8 tables, play about 350 hands an hour, that would equate to 1pt/bb @ 200nl = $4, 4 x 3.5 pt/bb = $14 x 3.5 (350/100) = $49 per hour. $49 per hour x 8 hours a day = $392 x 5 days a week = 1960 x 48 weeks (hey I need some time off ) = $94, 080 per year, plus rakeback/VIp programs and whatever Mtts I can make money in. This is a conservative estimate and a attainable win rate.

I will not approach this with money goals, although that is the ultimate reason we play, but I will dedicate myself to completely learning how other think, play, and succeed in NLHE FR and carve out my own existence in poker history.

I would also simply divide your estimate by 2. Most poker players that go pro find that they win half the \$'s they estimated before they left their job. If you are happy with the revised amount then go for it.
