CARDRUNNERS
What's Your Edge
I've decided to start coaching again. I will be coaching 100nl and 200nl players for $100/hr. I will only take 2 students right now. At some point in the near future I will offer coaching up to 400nl and my rates will increase at that time for any new students(prob $125-150/hr). However the 2 students I take now will have the $100/hr rate locked in for 45 days or 12 hours after I up the rates, whichever comes first...this way they will still be able to get a good amount of sessions in at the price they locked in for. I am definitely not going to up my rates before 2008 though fwiw.
I have been working on my game and think it is very good right now. I play a 28/23ish style and made that transition from playing 22/18ish. I think my postflop play is very good and I have alot of concepts to teach that I think many MSNL players don't understand. I will be doing coaching through a combination of Skype(chatting program) and Mikogo(screen sharing program). You will need both of those programs which are free and a headset w/ a microphone.
Here are some screen shots of my results. The 1st is my past 80k hands at 400nl all on FTP 6max. The 2nd is my stats since I have started to loosen up(the results are very good for how bad I was running. The 3rd is my PokerEV during the hands shown in the 2nd screen shot. It shows that I was running pretty bad but still had some pretty good results.
If you are interested or have any questions please PM me on CR.

For those thinking of taking this offer, I definitely recommend it. I talked to Ryan a few times in this past week or 2, his understanding of the game amazes me. Check out the posts he makes in the CR forums, imo the rate he's giving is a steal for what he has to offer.

Hi Ryan,
My name is Andrew and I work for BeamYourScreen, the company that produced Mikogo. I noticed a few posts on cardrunners.com discussing the use of Mikogo, especially in reference to Skype, including your post about using both these programs simultaneously for coaching.
I wanted to briefly let you know that we are currently working on developing a Mikogo Skype plug-in. Once it is up and running you will be able to access Mikogo via your Skype extras. We're confident that this will make using Skype and Mikogo together much more user-friendly and fun.
Hopefully it will assist you all in your poker coaching.
Like i said, the plug-in is still being developed. Once it's complete, I'll be sure to let you know.
In the meantime, feel free to continue to use Mikogo for all your coaching and cardrunner needs.
Regards,
Andrew
Apparently CR is opening up a new coaching forum. I am hoping they are doing this for free to better provide service to the struggling low limit player. If they force a fee to advertise for coaching, unfortunately this will be passed down to the students. In any case, this means more competition for me. In a way it will suck, but I believe in a free marketplace.
Competition will only make the services better and more efficient and cheaper. This will be great for students, and I have always been an advocate of people getting the best quality advice for their money, even if it means going to someone else other than me that may suit them better.
In any case, I put my resume in, and I think this will be exciting, as I love competition, and would love to drive my coaching competitors into the ground by outcoaching the hell out of them. I will be working very hard on my game, as well as adding a lot of things for my students.
Some things that I have been toying around with, those who are working very hard on there game, and looking to get almost weekly coaching will be rewarded with being able to access weekly group study sessions. Also, I have been thinking about doing a 4 week coaching seminar titled, Myths about the red line. This will probably involve power point presentations covering each topic in detail, also I have been thinking about offering a group consulting lesson where 6 of my students will play a table together. I'm really looking to reorganize my coaching style. A more structured approach, that will involve homework, individual sweat sessions, study groups, tests, group sweat sessions, group seminars, group consulting, poker tracker analysis, leak finder videos. I really have a lot of ideas on where I want to take my coaching. I want to build a close nit of people that will reinforce each other to stay on top of their game.
I'm not sure what exactly I will charge for these services. I'm not looking to make tons of $$ from coaching. I do think I should be fairly compensated. My rates will not be out rageous by any means, and I will try to make them fair to me, as well as to you so feedback on prices would be appreciated.
I hope you guys stick with me, and believe in the things that I teach. I feel I have a lot to offer, but I will understand if you think another coach will suit you better. And if good will doesn't convince you, maybe this will.
I had a successful month at the tables. I put in almost 47k hands which is a decent amount but I want to be closer to 60k a month. I played mostly 3/6 nl 6 max along with some 2/4 and 5/10.
My meta game has improved a lot. I think I am making the right adjustments and also changing up my play against the regulars so it's hard to play against me. I will continue to work very hard and making the correct plays because that's all you can control.
I am going to take on some more students for coaching in the next few weeks. I have a few lined up right now. I am comfortable coaching shorthanded NL up to 3-6. I will be at the Super Bowl this weekend! Shoot me a PM and I will get back to you on Monday.
Good Luck!
First off I've made my decision regarding April and I definitely will not be coaching anymore. To give you an idea of volume with coaching, I've got PMs as old at 10 days old in my box and I'm already booked out for the rest of the month. Just too much.
Moving forward I've been playing a lot of microstakes HU PLO and NLHE. Mixed results, winning in both though I'm not very confident in my HU skillset. I'm definitely more confident in my PLO game HU than I am my NLHE. I've requested coaching with Verneer for HU but he is in the same boat I am being extremely busy so I may have to look into others. We'll see though. I'd like to support another coach that I know rather than someone else.
I've played a bit of microstakes 6Max NLHE. It has been pretty fun and the games are so beatable its rediculous. I still beleive if you're trying to play a LAG game at 6Max for most players you're giving up value. It is so easy to print money playing TAG.
I'll start playing my normal games probably again tonight. We'll see though. My attention is needed to my studies and RAW vs Smackdown on 360 obv too.
Have been sick since the weekend so not much poker going on this week unfortunately, although I did get some articles/coaching done and watch two series of The Wire and most of the Rocky films whilst convalescing...;-) However things are progressing with the book and below is a provisional cover shot... there will be extracts in Poker Player magazine from May then hopefully copies available from June/July. I also noticed that twoplustwo.com put up a coaching forum so i wrote out a proper ad for it, the link is:
A mixture of 100NL and 200NL (3K hands at 100NL and 2K hands at 200NL). Impending doomswitch I guess for the 2nd part.
And a fun PLO hand (seems super-standard from little I know of PLO):

I'm spending a lot more time on coaching right now than I am on playing but that's fine as I still feel very green as a coach and am trying to find out what format is best for people to learn/grow as players. I feel like I'm learning a lot myself about the different level as well as what works and what doesn't when coaching. It's all part of the learning process I guess.
I'm putting in just enough hands to get my points at FTP and am content with that.
Day 4 was my first 1K day since going full-time. I was REALLY close the last few days but finally put together a couple of good sessions.
My hourly rate was $430.78/hr so this is now my new coaching rate. If you are still interested in coaching just PM me. I can do a special 5 session coaching deal for $2,000.
This was defnitely the hand of the day. I think pre-flop is a must-call once nowonda overcalls the 3-bet:

It was hillarious how Tsjerk berated me afterwards. He said "how can you call with 55 given all the people that have called already?" I wanted to say "you need to go to Cardrunners and learn about implied odds, friendo."
I also played this hand vs. Tsjerk. I debated putting forth a blocking bet on the river, but once he shoves I like folding. He was very loose (49/22/1.6) but his bet there usually is the goods. Basically my hand is a bluff-catcher.

Anyhow - feels good to get to to the grand. I'll take anything over $500/day. I also think that once I get over $1000 my motivation to play just plummets as I'm happy with the results. Today I just happened to catch a little heater at the end.
I'm not going to post many more hands as I think most of them are very standard. Hand of the day is just a fun thing for me to post though :)

"My hourly rate was \$430.78/hr so this is now my new coaching rate." keep it real :)

Congrats, I don't think you should find yourself less motivated, now you have to have a 10k day!!!

verneer,
I'm all for the plan you have and i follow it fairly closely because I'm on a similar plan myself, though I'm not quitting my job until November.
One thing that I find interesting is your focus on \$500 a day. Is this really a healthy way to think about how you're playing. Are you really thinking of it as an average or does it bug you if you aren't able to make \$500 in a day - because obviously it's unsustainable to think that you're going to win \$500 a day at the lmits you're playing (or any limit, for that matter). Does this mindset motivate you or do you think it might contribute to tilt during the inevitable downswing (oh my gosh, i haven't made \$500 in a single day for a week, etc.)?
It's not criticism; I'm just curious.
Forgot the most important detail! On thursday night at 10PM GMT (5 ET), I'm co-hosting a 25 euro rebuy (1 add-on or rebuy) on t6 with blopp from 2+2 - forumserver.twoplustwo.com/showthread.php. 2nd place gets an hour of coaching from blopp, 1st gets an hour of coaching from me and a custom 2+2 undertitle courtesy of scoot. We're also gonna have loads of sidebets going on - get involved! US-based players can't deposit but you can do member transfers without depositing, and snort has offered to help out in that regard - I'll vouch for him - so you've got no excuse.
Hope to see all of you playing!
I have had a bunch of requests for more info on coaching -
I plan on starting one group coaching class with 5 members that will focus on 25NLH 6max play. The class will meet once a week for 2 hours most likely Tues evening. Each session will be divided into group time and personal one-on-one time that other member can observe. All members will have the chance to ask questions about the one-on-one session they observed. Each member can choose what to spend their personal time on. Some possibilities include PT review, sweat sessions, review of trouble hands, discussion about specific topics or problems they are facing, etc I will be speaking with each member over the next week to determine what topics will be most useful for members as a group and to help members choose the best use of there personal time. I will be available for additional coaching session to the members of the group at a discounted hourly rate. The cost for the group coaching program will be $25/week.
I am also available for personal coaching for $35/hr
please feel free to contact me via CR or at mkelly1270@aol.com
I have had a chance to speak with almost everyone who was interested in the group coaching. I am excited to get going with this as they sound like a good group of guys to work with and I think they have a lot in common poker-wise. Two people decided to do private coaching instead of the group coaching so I have two spots open for the group coaching program(scroll down for details). We will start the group coaching Tues April 22. I will be away for the week of 4/12-4/20 so if you would like in on the group coaching please let me know by 4/11 - thanks
Last night, the 5/10 LHE game didn't go that late so I will be well rested going into the Fri night game for a change.
Tonight I played a short session of 100PLH for + $72 over about 500 hands. I would have had a good bit more if I hadn't overplayed AK in a 3B pot against a calling station !!
