Help.

I need some. Please advise this 23 yr old poker playing person on some good goals. I'd like to come up with 3 or so solid goals, with one having to do with poker and the other two improving myself/helping others in some way.

I'll pick some before I head to the bahamas so help a brotha out.

I often marvel at the diversity of approaches and results in poker that CardRunners member's take. All CR members have the ability to make money at poker because of the strategy and skills taught on the site, but thats where most diverge. Some members go on to great riches within poker while others go busto. What defines what direction they will go?

I think there are 4 factors that influence what direction you can go:

1. What are your goals?
2. How disciplined are you?
3. How do you handle adversity?
4 How important is it to you?

The reality is its hard to get somewhere if you don't know where you are going. Defining clear and specific goals are a first step to achieving them. Sometimes the goals you lay out aren't the ones you achieve, but the act of attempting to achieve them have gotten you farther than you ever imagined.

Factors 2 and 3 are heavily related to one another. Once you have identified concrete goals, how disciplined are you about achieving them? If you encounter resistance on your path to achieving your goals, how do you respond to it? Some players will develop clear goals but deviate as soon as they hit hard times or get distracted by other goals.

Lastly, how important are your goals? How much does it matter to you that you achieve them. What are you willing to give up to accomplish them? This is a matter of motivation and prioritization. I must admit that when I was 18 or even 24 that I didn't have any clear goals laid out. I was just taking life one day at a time. There is nothing inherently wrong with that. But as a result, my expectations were also low. I didn't get frustrated too much with where I was because I wasn't really investing too much in getting anywhere in particular. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Today, I have clear goals before me. While life and poker can be complicated and throw lots of twists and turns your way, being disciplined and focused will help tremendously. I don't always know exactly how I will achieve them but I work at them every day. I have a good sense of my strengths and weaknesses and tailor my goals accordingly to those limitations. I have found simpliflying my objectives has made it easier to focus and get things accomplished. As I get older, I don't have the luxury of starting over so I cherish what I've built and look to protect it.

I'll use this blog as an example of what I'm talking about. In the background, I had been trying to influence other blogs. When that didn't succeed I determined to start my own blog. My goals for the blog were simple. I would post something significant every day. My posts would be a reflection of who I was and my perspectives. I would be interactive with those interested in posting comments. I am not competing with another blog on poker content or describing lavish lifestyles.

Some of my CR friends gently joke that my blog is too serious or filled with gandhi like observations. The subject matter may not be hip enough for them. But I am resolved to explore those subjects that most resonate with me. If that interests you great, if not thats fine too. Our goals don't have to be the same.

I respect the path each CR member chooses in their poker journey. If I can assist in some small way along that path, I feel honored.

I wish success to each member of CR. Those that succeed generally will have laid out clear goals, worked hard, and perservered to reach their goals. Obstacles may come up along the way, but they adapt or shift course and continue on their path. They don't get distracted along the way. They have a drive to stick with their plan no matter what. So what is your plan?

I recorded a vid today playing 50nl 6 max and 50nl HU and I picked up 5 buyins. I think I'm gonna upload it and post it in the Members Contributions section. I think I played well in it and made some real nice moves/plays. I really feel like I'm playing my "A" game and pretty rededicated to playing a lot of hours in August.

August Goals:
1. Make it to the gym 4 days per week.
2. Get 8 hours of sleep and wake up at 9am or earlier
3. Make a trip to Phily to help my sister move.

Poker Goals:
1. Play 30k hands at 50nl 6 max.
2. Play 30k hands at 100nl 6 max.
3. Play 10k hands at 50nl HU.
4. Post atleast 3 tough hands in the forum per day.
5. Update blog with results daily.
6. Watch 4 CR vids a week.

I guess you can call this the 75k hand challenge. I'm really anxious and I can't wait to start. I feel real motivated. I have been having a small problem getting all my hands imported into PokerTracker for some reason? Not sure why but it seems like it's been cutting out the ends of my sessions lately. Oh well.

Financial Goals:
1. Make $1500 from 50nl 6 max.
2. Make $2500 from 100nl 6 max.
3. Make $500 from $50nl HU
4. Make $2k + from rakeback.

Totals = + $4500 from poker and +$2k from Rakeback for $6500.

I'm aiming high this month, but I'm 100% dedicated and I'll atleast log the hands, just really have to hope the results follow. If I miss the goals, so be it but I can at least say I tried.

Setting goals is something that can be done in all different aspects of life. Maybe your goal is to have done your homework before midnight, maybe it is to make your girl or boyfriend happy, maybe it is to travel to Australia and back before this summer, whatever it is, it's important to set goals in life. You should not set goals that force you to something, but without goals, you will stay on the same brick for to long and maybe realize what you missed.

I walked home tonight, and I actually thought about what goals I want to achieve. These kind of questions is not easy, because if you set a goal, you shouldn't give up until you get there, and sometimes the goal is not achievable. In my opinion you should set both longterm and short-term goals, longterm goals can seem to far away and short-term not to big of a goal.

Nothing is right or wrong when it comes to these things, it's all about what YOU want to achieve and if you haven't decide, then you won't achieve anything until you've decide. I don't want to sound harsh or anything, but what I'm trying to say is that when you're sitting in a rocking chair 82 years old and smoking a cigar, you want to be able to tell your grandchildren that you believed in something and tried to make it happen. Whether you actually did or didn't make it happen is only up to you. I truly believe that any man or woman can achieve anything they set their mind to, it all comes down to how bad they want it.

Plan for the future, but don't plan for so long that time runs you past...

This is Christian for cardrunners.com, wishing you all a happy weekend.

It's pretty sad, I've put in under 2000 hands this month.  Every time I think about playing, I talk myself into waiting until "tomorrow" to play, and tomorrow turns into tomorrow.  Not sure how I can fix this.  I used to play too  much, now I don't even really play.  During the 2k hands I'm up 3 buy-ins at 2/4.  I'm playing very well when playing, I just don't play long enough when I do.  I think I'm going to have to print up a schedule or something to make myself sit down and play.  My goals are obviously on hold as if I don't play at all whats the point of the goals.  The point of the goals was to push myself, and they obviously aren't motivating me at all.

Not sure what I can do to change my attitude.

so, $15 to $328

Despite the fact that I have played very few hands this month the bankroll has went over the $300 mark. I am happy about this as it means I have 30 buy ins for nl10 - which is the second rung of my progression plan, which is laid out in an earlier entry, so it feels like progress.

Looking forward and thinking about February, i want to set some goals. Even as I type the word goal I inwardly flinch. No matter, on I go.

For February, I will play a minimum of 30k hands of nl. No hand goals for plo or lhe, will play these games as the notion takes me. 30K hands is easy to do in a month, there are people who knock that out in a week.......failure to reach this goal is not an option. No monetory goals. Just get the hands in.

I was gonna put up some screen shots of PT but ive played so few hands it seems rather pointless. When i get to the end of feb and have a sample of 30k hands ill post that.

I will be working full time so I am going to keep my goals a little more in reach than last months goals.  I am hoping to play at least 13 hours a week not including watching videos or reading books.

June Goals

          - Play 25k hands

          - Maintain 3ptbb/100

          - Move up to 25NL full time by the end of the month

          - Make Silverstar. (If I play 25NL and 10NL for 25k hands I should make it.)

          - Clear $100 bonus on PS

          - Make a video and put it in the Member Contribution forum.

          - Play more 6 max

          - Stay active on CR

December 30, 2007

Someone asked me what my new years resolution was, and I realized I haven't put much thought into it.  My goals are certaintly changing quickly.  After finding a few months of rapid success, I thought my goals would be to work my ass of to be the best and wealthiest poker player that I can be.  Now, I just want to be financially secure, and have fun while travelling around and playing poker, and of course working for CardRunners.  I am looking to move up in the stakes, but for now, I plan to stay in the midstakes for a long while, and eventually work hard to become better.  I am quite happy with $200/hr, and I want to work the low variance route until I have my "back-up plans" in tact.

My back up plan's mean: money in the stock market, starting a retirement fund, 10k in cash in my safe, and 10k in my bank account.  I think I can accomplish this pretty fast now that I am out of college.  Financially I am shooting for 300k, which I think is a bit low, but with the variance I seem to always hit, who knows.  A car and boat are absolute goals of mine.  I wish I could believe I could own both by June, in time for wakeboarding, but I'm really not sure about that.  I should have both by December no problem.  Owning a boat while being in Vegas would be off the hook, but obviously I need a car first, to tow it.

Lately my blog posts have been subpar, my most important resolution is to improve my blog quality.  I could easily do a daily or bidaily update, with hand histories, pics, and more exciting personal life stuff, but I have just been less motivated in posting here, and more motivated in playing (because I am in a tense downswing).  Once I am back on top I will certainly post frequently.

For CR, my work goals are:  Getting in touch with marketing people from casino's.  Making a CR pamphlet, which will sit on the magazine rack next to CardPlayer in local casino's, help host CR get togethers in LA and Vegas, and most importantly, to truly become one of the team and be excepted as a coworker by "the greats" (Taylor Andrew Ezra Brian Brian CTS and Mike).

I always wondered that if you guys make CR very popular, then every1 will improve so much that only few top players will rake in the profit. But I guess there always be people who will play poker for fun and just to gamble. What do you think?

Yes, that is the debate, but there are just too many people with regular jobs that can't dedicate endless hours to the study like me and many others, thats where our edge will always be. Frequent play and updating strategies is necessary for continued success and there will always be at least 55% of people not doing that. However, the games will likely always continue to get tougher (except when the US allows online gaming, there will be huge \$\$\$\$ and I will be rich and celebrate with lavish parties)
