What's Your Edge

We’re in the middle of exams right now so I haven’t been able to play much poker. Instead, my poker fix has had to come in the form of tinkering with various table and card mods and my HUD layout. A major upgrade of Holdem Manager came out last week and it contained truckloads of new stats for the HUD: squeeze, 4-bet, 4-bet range, fold to 4-bet, triple barrel, fold to triple barrel, etc. These were previously relegated to the popup or didn’t exist at all, so naturally, in a fit of excitement, I threw every single one of them into my HUD.

Moving the new stats into position for each table type (full ring, six-max and heads-up) and site I played on took ages, but it was definitely worth it; I now had a wealth of new information with which to crush my opponents. Here’s a picture of what my HUD looked like at this point.

Later that night, I went onto the Two Plus Two forums and found a very interesting thread in the High Stakes NLHE forum. Basically, a struggling small stakes player was wondering how he could improve his game and what high stakes players did that separated them from everyone else. Surprisingly (at least, for Two Plus Two threads), several well thought out responses were offered and amongst them I couldn’t help but notice a pattern; they often advised against using a HUD, or at least, to keep the stats to a minimum. This, it was said, would help you develop better reads and get a better feel of game flow and game dynamics.

Ugh! I’d often heard this sort of advice before but never really bothered to listen to it. Now, having just spent two freaking hours perfecting my SuperHUDTM, I really didn’t want to listen to it! Unfortunately, deep down, I knew they were right and, as my own game had been stagnating in recent times, I decided that I’d be doing myself an injustice if I didn’t give it a try. So, begrudgingly, I went back to the drawing board and revamped my HUD, trying to keep it to the bare minimum.

Here’s what I eventually settled on (with revamped table and card mods from www.tiltbuster.com).

Beneath each player I have the standard VPIP/PFR/AF. On their left (descending) I have Hands/Fold BB to Steal/Attempt to Steal and on their right I have 3-Bet/Fold to 3-Bet. If I wanted to be extra-minimalist I could probably discard the right column stats altogether, but I decided against this as 3-bet stats are very useful in heads-up matches.

I’ve yet to get a chance to really sit down and play so I’m not sure if this minimalist HUD will actually help me with my reads. If it does however, it will be rather ironic since it will mean that the thing I had been looking for was actually right in front of me the whole time; in front of me, when it shouldn’t have been!

I've been playing on Cake for the past couple days and I'm not sure what to think. The software blows and there's no hud. The buttons are oddly placed and the tables can't be resized. It's too early to make a good enough judgement on how the competition is. And also, because I can't import the HHs into PT, I have no idea how well I'm playing or how I'm playing at all. It's a huge negative for me. Playing without hud is like writing with my foot. It's just completely unnatural (bad analogy, I know). I am up around $250 playing a mix of 50nl and 100nl. I can only deposit a max of 1K this month, so I really shouldn't be playing 100nl anyways with that BR.

I've been thinking about depositing onto Eurolinx as well, but I have a feeling it'll be somewhat similar. The software won't be as good, it'll be slower, but at least I'll have access to Hud stats. And that makes a huge difference when multitabling. So, I might just keep my account on Cake and play there if I'm running very badly at Party. I think having money on multiple sites can offer some mental relief when running badly.

I did withdraw some money from Party, so I might grind the 100nl tables there until I hit 5k again, then start playing the 200nl games again. Hopefully that shouldn't take too long.

Thanks for reading.

Ya dude, I'd go to Eurolinx. Software is clunkier than other sites for sure, and you gotta resize the tables urself (irritating), but a decent number of games run. It's also helpful that you can't multitable THAT well because of the crappy software, so therefore u can focus by having no more than really 6 tables at a time. HU games run too... cake is apparently juicy, but sorta sketchy IMO. Eurolinx is fairly juicy and people are fairly loose preflop. Their support is sick good and you can cash out rakeback as it's earned into ur poker account which is SWEET. They also have a 100% up to \$1k deposit bonus (ask their support about it... I think you can get it from LeggoPoker.com too). I strongly suggest you move their. Yes, not great software, but good competition, wire xfer deposits/cashouts, great support, daily rakeback if you choose, and it feels fairly fresh. Most likely better software than cake (because cake has all this 3d crap like pokerroom). GL dude- I think Eurolinx is the way to go. Partypoker- there's no rakeback, fairly tough competition from what I hear, crappy support, fairly buggy software, irritating sounds, glitchy slider (at least from the old days), crappy 3d models, and no deposit bonus. It's srsly one of the worst places to play as of now probably.

Yeah I'm still debating if I want to try Eurolinx right now. I'm still going to give cake a fair shot before I decide to try Eurolinx.

Looks like Stars has a double FPPs promotion going on this month.  Maybe I'll move some money on there sooner than I had planned.  I can picture Stars being just filled with regular grinders right now :P   It's going to be insanely weird to use a HUD again.   But at the same time, I'll be able to post graphs again and really analyze my hands which I've missed so much of the past couple months.

Thanks for reading.

I played ~ 1,500 hands of 100NL and 100PL for almost 3 BIs of profit.  I think I played well but there are always a few hands that I still make small mistakes on during a session.  I think I will experiment playing only 2-3 tables of 100NL so I can play the player more.  I also played some 50NL and lost ~1/2 BI due to being card dead.

I also spent some time trying to improve my HUD layout.  I want to have everything I need displayed on the HUD for my 8 tabling sessions when there is no time to look at the pop-up window.

The microstakes coaching group is filled at the moment but I will still be available to coach individually for $35/hr.  I will also be keeping a waiting list for those interested in the microstakes coaching group.  Thanks for all the interest.

Yesterday I did a coaching session with a friend who has played live for a living the past 2 years.  I am going to help him transition into playing more online.  I think I will be mostly helping learn how to use PT and HUD as he is already a good player.  He asked me a great question that I don't know the answer to - How many online players are using tools like PT/HUD? - anyone have any ideas on this?

Ok, spent a bit of time today getting my poker mods/HUD layout in order. I play on iPoker where the graphics/software is pretty crappy, so its nice to mod it up a little.

For whatever reason having some nice table mods and a neat, efficient HUD does wonders for my confidence/mindset when grinding. Today I set up my HUD for HU games, based mainly on MasterLJ's one. (although I lost my 6max HUD in the process so had to spend like another 40 mins making that one again as well)

I'm looking forward to putting in more hours at the 50NL HU games, because I think it could be very profitable playing 4 tables of solid, careful play.

Anyways, I'm not gonna have too much time to put in hours after this friday, so I'm hoping to get a good 30 hours of play in before then. Prolly try to put 4 tonight, 11 tomorrow, 11 thursday . . guess thats 26. I've never played even close to 11 hours in a day, let alone two days in a row, so I'll see how that goes.

Current Bankroll: $3,168

Lesson of the day: Pay attention to your HUD.. especially the aggression factor.

I have recently played my first couple of sessions at FT. They all went well were i posted some smallish wins, but thats fine since I'm getting used to the competition, which is have to say, is very loose aggro.  I feel like im sitting at tables full of CR members, which is fine. I'm going to have to take the thinking to the next level though, which i feel like I can do pretty well so we'll see how it goes.  I have some really interesting hands saved, but my poker tracker is being gay so ill post them when i get a chance...

On that note, does anyone have any clue when they are going to merge the PAHUD with PT3?  I havent been able to use my HUD in forever because I have a new computer and all I could download was PT3. I know the site gives a general timeframe of when everything should come out, I was just wondering if anyone knew anything more exact.

Well thats it for now, if anyone could let me know about the HUD that would be great.

yeah, I cant get the old PT tho, so thus I cant use the old HUD. I bought a new comp recently, and the only thing available for download was PT3. It just kind of sucks since I tend to metagame a lot, oh well. Guess i'll just wait it out.

Well, I was going to blog about PA HUD and PLO, but their server is having issues and giving people a registration error message which causes the software to be useless.  Oh well, once they have their issues ironed out I'll be back playing and hopefully I can write something useful about using PA HUD.
