Well I'm in the positive for the month now. I've run terrible the last two days, but I've managed to avoid tilting. How have I done that? Well, I'm embarrassed to admit this, but I've been on a Mariah Carey kick lately. I'm not talking about her new music, I've mostly been listening to the music she made when she embraced her 1/2 white side (she now thinks she's black and embraces the 1/2 black side, although i like that music too). Let me tell you, it's not even possible to tilt when you are listening to One Sweet Day w/ mariah and boyz II men.

I have pretty good music taste most of the time, but sometimes i listen to some absolute shit...

Three of my friends and i took a trip thurs-sun this week to Columbia, SC.  One of our friends moved away to SC a few months ago, so we are here to visit.  The weather sucks here today, but it was nice yesterday so we laid out by the pool for a bit.

We woke up, ate at Waffle House (always been a goal of mine), then drove around the town a little bit.  I got a pretty good amount of work done during the late morning and afternoon, as most of my friends went back to bed or to the pool.  Later I got a workout in, then we went out for dinner at this place called Mellow Mushroom.  After coming back home and drinking a fair bit, we headed out to some random college bars.  The cab ride over was unbelievable, this young cab driver had a laptop mounted in her car with a huge list of music videos.  She let you pick whatever you watned to listen to, and then asked, "do you guys like loud music??"  We were like, sure, and she proceeded to blast music so loud that my body was shaking.  It was cool to watch the music videos on the laptop, tho.

We bounced around to like 4 bars, then felt mildly old being 23-24 in bars with kids that are mostly 19-22, and came home around 130.  If anyone has good suggestions for dinner or bars around here, let me know, we'll be doing more of the same tonight.

COLUMBIA

Im 21 and go to school at USC. For dinner, go to Gervais street, which is the Vista, and try Sakitumi for sushi, or Liberty for regular food. For bars you either have 5 Points which is the younger scene but good bars like Sharkys, Red Hot, or Bays if u dont want all the freshman. Dont go to jungles. The Vista is kind of an older crowd, more expensive, Clubhouse is good. I would say go to 5 points if u want to party more. Have fun in Columbia.

I grew up in Columbia. You should go to Maurice's for BBQ. Goatfeathers was a popular hangout back in the day, dunno if it's still there.

Oh, just noticed you were only there through Sunday. Oh well.

Amazingly enough, although I live in the Pacific Northwest, home to the java junkie, I don't drink coffee. In fact, I don't rely on any caffeine to get through my days. These days I'm often tired. My work days are long and I don't always get enough sleep.

My saving grace is music. It is what drives me forward when I am lethargic. At times, it gives me energy, other times its calms me. The range of music can lift that burden of long hours, inspiring me. The variety of music affects my moods significantly, and often leads to great focus and insight. The music source shifts around depending on my mood.

Lately I have been accessing sources like pandora.com, musicovery.com, xm satellite radio or even youtube. Each has their strengths or weaknesses in music delivery. Together, they create of package of music delivery that ensure I get through each day. I won't share my particular listening choices because everyone has different artists, groups and musical genres they prefer. This post isn't about saying one is better than another. Only that music is one of the great contributions to society and life. Most importantly, I would just like to say a "thank you" to all the creative musically gifted individuals who make the 'java' that gets me through each day.

One of the aspects that I enjoyed most in owning my African art gallery for 12 years was playing African music all day. It was one of the great joys and comforts for the long hours I spent waiting on customers to walk in and enjoy the art. It's been 11 months since it closed and I've hardly played any African music since its closure. Tonight, I was wandering on You Tube and decided to pull up a couple songs to share with members. Consider it a cultural immersion into something very different from the normal music you listen to. There is such a variety of different music styles throughout Africa. What has always struck me about the music is that it was often sung in language I didn't know and yet it still conveyed tremendous feeling and emotion.

While I have over 100 cds in my collection, the samples I could choose from on You Tube were quite limited. I chose one from my favorite singer in Zimbabwe - Oliver Mtukudi. He is the most popular artist in the country and has an incredibly soulful voice.

The second video is a montage of several Malian artists. It also shows some of the beautiful landscape of Mali. It is much more mellow guitar based music from artists like Habib Koite and others. I'll share some more music and videos in the future if people enjoy them.

Continuing my Friday night music theme...

A few years ago, on my drives home from the gallery, I used to hear these new songs on the local alternative station, 94.7 KNRK in Portland, called mash ups. Mixing music has been around for quite a while, obviously. In fact today, you can hardly hear a hip hop or rap song that doesn't borrow heavily from some other well known song. But, in these cases they were taking two, three or four well known songs and 'mashing' them up. They brought together very disparate styles of music to blend them together making some very interesting combinations. Most of them were local DJ's creatively mixing on their own. I always wondered how they were allowed to do this with the strict music rights laws out there. I thought I would share a few interesting ones.

One of the early mash ups that made got a lot of run, was "Boulevard of Broken Songs".

In this version it took Green Day's popular song and mixed in Oasis, Travis and even Eminem.

"Stayin Alive in Da Club" 50 Cent vs. Bee Gees

"Digital love love baby" Daft Punk vs. Vanilla Ice

"Crushingly Close" Nine Inch Nails vs. Garbage

"Sweet Home Country Grammar" Nelly vs. Lynyrd Skynyrd

The last of tonights selection, "A Stroke of Genie-us" The Strokes vs. Christina Aquilera

Rap ALWAYS has borrowed heavily from other, well-known songs.

Thanks for pointing out my typo, bass. It's corrected. And dhdell, my recollection of very early rap and hip hop was that they didn't sample and borrow from other music to the level they do today (but i'm old, so maybe my recollection from 25 years ago isn't so good).

April 05, 2008

Friday has come again and it's time for another musical themed entry. Yesterday, the director of one of the web design firms I met with admitted in conversation that he was a former Deadhead. Years ago he had been living on the east coast, had followed the Grateful Dead on one of their tours out west, and he never went back. He eventually settled in Portland for the high quality of life he found here. He, like many, appreciated many things about the Dead; the music, the culture, the freedom, and the experimentation. The Dead were non conformists and loved to experiment and improvise. Much of that adventure and musical exploration has been lost in music today. Radio demands shorter catchy songs in the 2:30 to 4:00 minute range. That leaves no room to experiment musically. Your journey, no matter how great the song, is very structured and brief.

While I was never a big fan of the Dead, I always appreciated their approach to their music. I have always loved bands who take a catchy riff or melody and expand and experiment with it. In a different way, it was why I enjoyed some classical music as a youngster because you were taken on an extended journey that explored the range of the particular composition.

I thought I would share some samples of some interesting groups. The first is the Grateful Dead performing Fire on the Mountain.

With with the demise of the Dead, some groups tried to take up the mantle, most notably Phish. I'm not as familiar with them and I quickly selected a song Farmhouse that captures a sense of their music.

This week I found a couple groups that are also into experimentation and jamming, carrying on the spirit of these earlier groups. They have very different music styles and backgrounds. The first Lymbyc Systym has a very electronica fusion feel with a very trippy video accompanying their song Truth Skull.

The second group is from Norway. They have many musical influences but also embrace the experimental and improvisational elements of these other groups. The group is Jagga Jazzist and the song is All I Know Is Tonight. Enjoy tonight's musical selections.

Heady Blog Brah

I just wanted to comment on how cool it is that you made this post. Maybe you're not as tightly wound as I originally thought.

There are a lot of good shows to stream (excellent background music for long poker sessions) at panicstream.com and nugs.net. Since you don't have to download a torrent first, streaming is a lot simpler to listen and navigate.

http://panicstream.com/nonwsp.htm is a link to the diverse collection of heady non-WSP samples. All of the available GD dates are at the bottom. I also must recommend the obvious WSP streams as well, they are likely my favorite band ever. Especially during the Houser(pre-summer '02) era.

Now get your jam on and go dance with the wookies!

It's Friday and I'm continuing my Love theme.   I thought I would share this video by Christopher Lawrence from Love Fest 2006.  Of course this takes place in San Francisco, where all kind of love is expressed.  I got a kick out of seeing all the disparate people dancing and enjoying the music.  Music and love are wonderful that way.  There is no one way to express the joy you feel or get from it.  All types of people bring their unique identity to bear on it.  Check out the first 4 minutes, it made me smile (lime green sweat suit with gang signals FTW).

It's Friday night and time for a music flashback. I was feeling sluggish all day today because I haven't had a lot of sleep the last couple nights and I took my wife and kids to the airport at 3 am this morning. I decided to grind a couple tables of PLO throughout the day as I awaited the emails and proofs from the web designers. Music always keeps me energized while playing. I started with Pandora and then moved onto AOL Radio. Their new speedy interface is quite nice. As I jumped around stations, I stumbled on this song that transported me back to my college days. It's old school house music - It Takes Two by Rob Base and DJ E-Z Rock.

I was stuck most of the day. But despite not hitting much, I kept grinding and ended up some. This second video is helping me to unwind. It is one of the first Radiohead songs that I really liked - Street Spirit (fade out.  It's also a cool video.

August 08, 2008

I've missed a couple Fridays with my music entries, so back on topic.

If you are having a good time, who in their right mind wants it to end?  That is my feelings about music.  When I am enjoying a song, no matter what style of music it is, I want it to continue.  I've never liked the artificial constraints of 3-4 minutes that most mainstream songs conform to nowadays.  That shortened length prevents the artist from exploring the full potential of their songs.

That was on aspect of classical music that I appreciated when I was a youngster.  They took a theme and tried to fully explore and develop it through different movements.  Space music, the likes of Tangerine Dream or Jean Michel Jarre, often tried to do the same with ethereal no vocals music.  This element is also one reason I enjoy a lot of trance, electronica and dance music because when they find a good groove they look to extend the song so it realizes it's potential.  I like these longer compositions because they take me on a musical journey.  This is the type of music I prefer when playing poker, too.  They can provide a relaxing or sometimes energizing environment, that's not distracting to my focus of making good decisions at the tables.

The first song is very mellow.  I stumbled across it this week. Spiralling by Takla Makan

The second song is a Tangerine Dream tune - Love On A Real Train (from Risky Business)

The third song is a remixed version of Rapture by iiO.

Seth Godin - Purple Cow

Do yourself a favor and read this book: Purple Cow by Seth Godin

It will take you half a day or less to read - and the basic premise behind this book is creating something remarkable. Remarkable ideas are worth spreading, worth customers talking about, etc. A purple cow in the field is worth mentioning...

GL w/the start up. Always fun.
