Players seem pretty damn awful at this limit thing.
so im sitting in my room with gaucho2121 and whitelime. the borgata fucked us over like crazy telling us that they had no two bedrooms available even tho i'd reserved one. i asked the manager to comp us a sleeping bag at which point he laughed at us and told us he'd have room service send some extra sheets and pillows.
whitelime slept on the floor which meant that i had to share a bed with gaucho. eww he has smelly feet.
i played a little no limit in the new, beautiful poker room and lost somehow to the worst players in the history of the world. i even got to quote grimhogun at one point, offering to a fellow player "first time playing the poker?" when one woman called me out of position with no pair/no draw and turned top pair versus my previous top pair, she remarked that she couldn't win with her good cards, so decided to start playing her bad cards. i responded that when im losing, i also like to play my bad cards. the whole table nodded in agreement.
anyways im about to go play the $1000 WPT Borgata event. wish me luck.

Dear Blog,
There is seriously a conspiracy theory linked to downswings. Pull your Sherlock Holmes's magnifying glass out because here's the clues to what I've keyed in on lately.
1) There will be a significant number of AA vs. KK or KK vs. AA etc. in which you will come out on the butt raped in of the deal. Today equals 5 out of 6 days of KK vs. AA. Guess who's getting the lube.
2) All draws will make their outs no matter how strong you bet. Now long term, its cool their calling you down but when a villain has $25 left and the pot is $125 and the flush card hits and you're getting 6:1 with top pair or two pair, you don't even want to see the cards flipped over.
Well, enough whining of short term variance. I'm about to buy Assassin's Creed with some donkatron's money. That always take some of the pain away.

TR, I managed to find my way to your blog; it's great. I haven't delved into the poker material thus far, but some of your insights on life / situations surrounding the game of poker are key. Specifically: Find someone better than you and pick their brain. Do this in every aspect of life.
I'm not sure if your family pecking order is similar to mine (I'm the third of three kids), but I've found that this gather, cleanse / discard, internalize framework for information is really just being a product of having an older brother and sister (3 and 5 years older, respectively). Regardless, it's such a useful frame to have -- any success I've had in life has been due, in part or whole, to others that have helped me along the way.
I'm linking your blog up on mine and will be keeping an eye on it. Congrats on the recent addition to your fam and I'm sure you'll be on a sharp upswing soon. Cheers, man.

The way I played this hand screamed AK. As sick as this sounds I almost thought about tossing the hand saving the remaining 6 dollars. But since I had an Ace I thought it was just as likely he had AK or KQ. I really like the check raise for two reasons. 1. I knew he would continuation bet here with AK, AQ, QQ and obviously AA. If I bet out he could raise and I could be faced with a really tough decision. But by checkraising I get money from his cbet with hands that he wouldn't call a donk bet. He took a long time after I checkraised maybe fearing KK or TT. Looking back I think I might have been better off folding because the only way I was going to make money after the flop was if he had AQ, AJ, or possible KQ suited, and we both flop a pair. I would have liked the call better if my hand was suited.
Here's a hand I think I played well. Obviously some people are going to argue but I avoided giving away too much money, while possibly making the most of my hand if I was ahead.

Above is another reason I don't like three betting. Now when I say I don't like three betting I still think that there are times when it's a good idea. For instance, if there is a raise and a call I would gladly pop it up if I have position on both players with a really good hand. If there is an UTG raise and a call and I close the betting I might just call hoping to checkraise the field on the flop. Like I said before there is so much value in having relative position especially since so many players are playing LAG styles.
In a previous post I said I would talk a little bit about preflop strategy.
Preflop I raise 3x. Playing higher at nl50 I would raise 2.5x or 3x. I try to stay away from playing high card hands in position 1 and 2 other than AK. The hands I like playing in early position are the hand I also play in late position which include the following, 22+, AK, suited Aces, suited connectors, suited one gappers, and suited cards T+. In late pos. I will include connectors such as 67, QJ, 45 (the above is only if I'm opening).
Against a limper I will also limp with the speculative hands. Like I said before I love having relative position. So if the first limper likes limping and calling a raise I will gladly limp with a speculative hand hoping the button or better yet the SB raises. If the first limper then folds I can chuck my hand or call depending on my cards, the stacks, and the situation. If I have a very aggressive player to my left I will also limp after a limper with AA, KK, AK, planning to reraise. Sometimes you limp with a big hand and aggro donk will fold but it's not the end of the world because you can still extract some value out of your hand. You might flop a set against the fishes two pair, Overpair vs. his top pair. ETC....
Next post will be a little more about preflop play, and some postflop play. I'm glad that some people disagree with me saying that it's not optimal. If you can outplay your opposition any reasonable style can be profitable. Some of these tactics I don't agree with like open limping on the button, raising 5x preflop, minraising, and limp reraising in EP with AA, all of which I've seen work.
Some random thoughts ------- It bothers me watching fat people jog. Why don't British people tip? The voices at self-checkout lines must be resposible for several suicide deaths each year.
By the way I don't proofread this shit. So If something doesn't make sense just do your best to decipher it.
One final thing. Yesterday I received the biggest insult in my life. Someone had the audacity to tell my gf that she thinks I look like John Stamos. I think she lost it. Check out my profile pic. I'm on the right. The guy on the left is my buddy Mouse (named for obvious reasons)
Oct 25, 07 08:06:37
I think you are far too results orientated (e.g. there is no way you fold the AK there, you probably should 4-bet preflop in fact, and the TT/JJ hand is a good example of how you saved money due to your style but I imagine you play QQ-AA the same way and imagine how much value you would have lost).
Anyway what I wanna talk about is your 3-bet strategy (or lackthereof). I am probably one of the players who calls a lot more than most regs at my limit (1/2 and 2/4, reflected in quite a wide gap between my VPIP and PFR of 25/18) so don't think that I am one of those people who 3-bets just for the sake of 3-betting. But not having 3-betting in your arsenal is a huge leak.
At the very least, if you wish to call preflop and 'outplay' your opponents (though I question the degree to which you are doing this...flopping mini-coolers is not outplaying your opponents; moreover, outplaying your opponent's usually means repping a hand that you don't have but which your opponent's can read and believe...if you play a hand perfectly consistely with say a flush draw at this level and it hits on the river, I bet they still call your river bet anyway here so it's not a very good idea at these stakes), do it in position only. Thus, the TT hand is an automatic 3-bet and stacking it off for 100bbs on the flop is not bad at all either.
Just calling OTB too often is a sure way to lose money. If a cutoff or button opens 3-betting is almost always a better option if you are going to continue (small pairs being the common exception). It is a huge reverse implied odds situation if you just call. Say you defend with JTs and the flop comes J72r. That's about as good as it gets. How do you play this? If you lead, most players will realise that this is a feeler bet 'to see where you're at'. If they raise, you don't know if they have the goods or if they are bluffing your weakness. How about a check-raise? A check-raise would essentially turn your hand into a bluff. If your opponent has you beat he'll shove and will do so occasionally with bluffs or even 88-TT. In this case you're put in a difficult decision and will usually be making a crying call or a reluctant fold. How about the check-call? In this case, your opponent will not win any more money if your opponent shuts down (the best scenario you can hope for) so you've basically defended your blind to take one bet from your opponent 1/3 of the time. Hardly worth it. On the other hand, the opponent might bluff turned Q/K/As with the correct frequency that you cannot exploit it. Or he may just triple barrel blank turns and rivers. Either way, you cannot feel good about your top pair.
Now, back to your TT hand. I have no idea what your opponent is doing but he should be triple barrelling that board and folding to a check-raise in most cases. What would you have done if he had done so and not let you get away so cheap? You can hardly fold since you've underrepped your hand so much yet calling triple barrels is hardly fun either when you are both so deep. By reraising preflop, you commit enough of your stack so that even if you get stacked here, the times you make money v an AQ/KQs etc that calls preflop and folds on the flop will make up for it, not to mention the times you stack smaller pocket pairs (say you had QQ here), which you will never do by check-calling in this manner that you use.
Nov 3, 07 15:52:11
If I get 100 bb's in with the TT on that board I'm very likely to be beat. I know it's lower limits but the games are getting harder and I don't regularly see someone stacking off with overcards or a top pair like A7.
With your JTs example. I would call pre, on flop (depending on the player) I would either c/c or c/r, on the turn I would probably c/f, on the river I would value bet if the turn went check check.
Another thing with calling in position against an aggressive opponent. If is opening with all kinds of shit you can simply call preflop and then raise any flop. This would accomplish the exact same thing as reraising but there would be even more of your opponents money in the pot.
With the TT I fold to three barrels. What would he three barrel here? Overcards? I only beat 99. Easy fold. I lost the least and could have potentially made the most.
I wouldn't play QQ and AA the same way. I probably would have checked raised at some point because there would be many more hands I have beat (12-24 more combinations.)
Recently when playing lower stakes I've been huge on talking at the tables. I've been chatting it up with CR members as well as trash talking my oponents to get action. I got this idea from JohnnyDrama as he does this a ton. I'm always laughing when I'm typing and it's mostly to encourage action. If your ever playing me and I talk trash, please don't hold it against me or take anything personal. It's all for the heat of the battle and really gets me going. It's very rare that you'll see me talking at the table as I have chat off most times when playing my regular games because I'll be 6-8 tabling and really focusing. I do sometimes drop down to play micro stakes with buddies or to kill frustration, etc and really play 1-2 tables. Now that I got that out of the way, time to todays hand. I decided to play some 50nl HU against short stackers or Stars to crush their dreams and bankrolls. Turns out it was easier then I had ever imagined.

I still don't know how to put these in my blog GRRRR.

I had a decent day at the tables yesterday, playing strictly 3/6 no-limit and finishing up about four grand. Last night the games were awesome, and it seemed all of my tables were full of fish. It was definitely the juiciest I had seen the games in a while. I took a lot of money off of the fish, but also beat up on the regulars quite a bit.
The hands I played against weak players were pretty straightforward, but I played a few interesting ones with the regulars in the game. Here's one hand against a good multitabling player:
Party Poker No-Limit Hold'em, $6 BB (6 handed)
UTG ($317.60)
Cole ($843.65)
CO ($1126.40)
Button ($912.45)
SB ($828.55)
BB ($261.30)
Preflop: Cole is MP with 8
, 7
. SB posts a blind of $3.
1 fold, Cole raises to $21, CO raises to $75, 3 folds, Cole calls $54.
I raise the pot with some suited connectors and am reraised by the cutoff. I think he's got a pretty narrow range and we're pretty deep so I call knowing that I can get away cheaply, stack him with 2 pair or better, or bluff him off of a one pair type hand.
Flop: ($159) K
, 2
, 7
(2 players)
Cole checks, CO bets $110, Cole calls $768.65 (All-In), CO folds.
I make middle pair and a flush draw. I check to the cutoff who bets 3/4-pot and I quickly raise him all-in. I know that he doesn't want to play a big pot with one pair here, and the only hand I'm scared of is KK. I'm in a coin flip against AA or AK. As long as he doesn't have KK, I'm happy with any decision he makes. It's a pretty tough decision for him, and he times out and folds.
Final Pot: $1037.65
I later found out that the cutoff had A
K
. From an equity calculation, I know that I am exactly 50.1% to win on the flop. With all the dead money in the pot, his fold was a big mistake. When my opponents make mistakes, I make money.

I've gotten to know a bunch of the 2+2ers a little bit better, so I can put their 2+2 names to their Party Poker screen names. We are constantly at the same tables, and it's a friendly environment. Still, we're all there to make money and everyone is constantly trying to outplay each other. This leads to a general attitude of mistrust, never believing anyone has a hand at the table (which is true some of the time, since we bluff each other a lot). It sure is nice when you get paid off big though:
Party Poker No-Limit Hold'em, $6 BB (6 handed)
BB ($591)
UTG ($653.27)
Cole ($1993.78)
CO ($861.20)
Button ($1176.25)
SB ($408.13)
Preflop: Cole is MP with T
, 9
. SB posts a blind of $3.
1 fold, Cole raises to $21, 1 fold, Button raises to $70, 2 folds, Cole calls $49.
I raise the pot with high suited connectors and am reraised by the button. He's a 2+2er and a regular in the midstakes no-limit games. We both reraise each other very frequently with a wide variety of hands. This makes it difficult to play against him because I can't tell if he has aces or eight five offsuit. We're both 200BBs deep so I call his raise.
Flop: ($149) 9

Cole checks, Button bets $110, Cole raises to $335, Button calls $996.25 (All-In), Cole calls $771.25.
I make top two pair and I hope he's got some sort of overpair after betting 3/4-pot. This is the absolute best board for me and it's extremely unlikely I'm behind so I checkraise. He shoves all of his chips in and I instantly call figuring he has AA or KK.
Turn: ($2361.50) A
(2 players, 1 all-in)
River: ($2361.50) A
(2 players, 1 all-in)
Final Pot: $2361.50
I am cursing and throwing my mouse as I see the turn and river fall. I now lose to AA, AK/AQ, KK, JJ; basically his entire hand range. Then I see the pot coming my direction! I guess he figured I was bluffing or had QJ for a big draw, and his sevens are no good. I was pretty shocked he played a 400BB pot with a weak holding.
Cole has T
9
(two pair, aces and tens).
Button has 7
7
(two pair, aces and sevens).
Outcome: Cole wins $2361.50.
I got stacked a few times yesterday, but it was primarily in situations where I got my money in with the best of it. I fired up a few tables this morning and quickly dropped two buyins, the first with AK vs. 33 going all-in on an AT6 flop and the second with KK vs. AQ all-in preflop. This was a bit frustrating, but I found a good 5/10 game and got close to even. If the games are good tonight I may play some more hands.
I played a decent session today, around 2000 hands. During the first 1900 I lost 4 out of 4 coinflips for $5,000 each, just AK < 99 etc over and over and over. I made a nice recovery though and finished down only $1,500 or so. An hour later I returned to the tables, played 100 hands against complete idiots, and won $27,500 putting me at +$26,000 on the day.

People frequently tell me, "yeah but for each one of these I bet there are ten times where you called a push with middle pair and were up against the nuts." Well, nope. Being a good high stakes player is all about adjusting to the flow of the game, seeing all the variables, and being able to put your opponent on a hand. I occasionally make a bad call or two, but I haven't had a single one this month for stacks where I got it all in with middle pair or anything. These hands also show how being a tough, aggressive player can tilt the hell out of your opponents.
I'm now up about $100,000 in October, which is great considering I had a -$69,000 day. I haven't included any images lately so what the heck, here's one. This is my no-limit hold'em play on Party/FTP/Crypto during October. I'm also down $35,000 or so in pot-limit Omaha and up just under $40,000 in UltimateBet's no-limit games.
