CARDRUNNERS
What's Your Edge
Gonna go play some now. I'll update later.
I am going to read some books, workout more, get caught up on school and put more of my time into Cardrunners for the time being. That sounds a lot more productive than sitting at some virtual poker tables and losing or breaking even.

I've had this sort of realization in the past, but it's easy to forget about it. Things get so skewed living in the poker world, especially being in Las Vegas. The important thing is to take a step back and look at what is really happening. I'm doing great for myself and even If I can't make as much money at poker as I once did or as others do, I shouldn't let that get me down. Life is incredibly good. There is no reason to let the tables get me down, especially when I'm seeing a profit.
I haven't played yet today. We were having internet issues earlier and I also had a lot of stuff to get done for Cardrunners. It's kind of hard getting some stuff done because we are 3 hours behind the east coast and I'm not exactly getting up early here.
It seems like Americans are always hating on America today. I'll be honest, I'm often one of them. It can be so easy to take everything we have for granted and complain about the things that our country doesn't do right. We have some major problems, no doubt, but the truth is though we are all insanely lucky to live in a free country. I know it's so easy to lose perspective at times, especially being so ingrained in the poker world where money has a greatly diminished value. I try my best to keep things in focus, but I'm not always successful at it. I saw this clip today and it reminded me of how well I have it. I ask that everyone take 5 minutes to watch this clip. It's a great speech in honor of MLK and It really helps put things in perspective.

We officially hired our new Chicago admin today. Her name is Caroline. It was a very difficult process. It came down to two girls that both would have done a great job. After two interviews with both girls, we just felt that Caroline came across as the better candidate. Caroline is going to get involved in the Cardrunners community and I'm excited to see that happen. It will be very interesting to watch someone with no experience with the poker world try to soak in this very unique culture. I'm sure she will be shocked at some of the things that go on (mostly related to how some people treat money aka prop bets and high stakes games). We are going to have her blog about starting her job for Cardrunners and just her integration into the poker community in general. She starts on Monday. The one downside to her is that when I hear her name it gets the Outkast song in my head. I can't stop singing CaroLIIIIINE!!! I also only know that Caroline line and the one about roses really smelling like poopoo. Catchy song that doesn't get out of your head easily...
I gotta stop lying about posting poker hands. The thing is I usually blog on my work computer and play on my bigass laptop that I typically keep at home. No good, I know. I feel like my frequent blogging will be coming back to me very soon.
I'm a little disappointed with the new season of the Wire. I think it's too early to judge it though. Again, watch that show if you haven't yet. Best show ever, even if the new season is starting a bit slow. Taylor keeps telling me Dexter is the best show ever. I know that's not true, but I think I'll still start watching it soon.
I've caught a few of the new American Idol shows. I always like watching the tryouts. Overall, they haven't been that great. There is one guy that stands out though. He made up his own song and it's catchy as hell and hilarious to boot. It's long, but worth watching. Check it out.

DEXTER IS NO WIRE. I ADMIT THAT DEXTER IS ENTERTAINING BUT IT'S NOT THE WIRE.
I got back from Hawaii fine. We left at like 8pm which worked out well. I was pretty exhausted from the trip and the surfing that day in particular so I was able to sleep the entire 9 or so hours home. I even got in a +$1500 session during my 1.5 hour layover in LA. It's nice to be back in Chicago, especially now that the weather is really improving here. It has been mid 50s the last two days which is great. I love it when it starts to get warm here. Baseball season is starting next week too. It's a good time of the year!
I was still a bit jet lagged on Sunday, so I decided to spend the day on my couch catching up on TV. I also had rented Braveheart from Netflix and I wanted to watch that and return it. Believe it or not, I had never seen that movie all the way through. I had seen bits and pieces on TV over the years, but that doesn't do the movie any justice. I'm pretty angry at myself for waiting so long to sit down and watch it. What a sick movie. It's easily in the top 5 movies I've ever seen. I really loved it. I also had a bunch of episodes of Lost and John Adams (new HBO miniseries) to catch up on. I think Lost has really gone down the tubes and I'm strongly considering quitting it. I'll see how it is for a few more episodes... John Adams is a great show. I highly recommend it if you haven't seen it yet. If you couldn't guess, it's about John Adams life. I've always been one who likes history, so it's great to see a well done HBO series on someone as important to our nation's history as John Adams. I'll admit that it can get a little slow at times, but the historical significance of the show makes up for that.
I've been reading some more blogs on Cardrunners lately and I also noticed a few new ones from some of my friends.
Gordo16: I think his blog is great. I enjoy reading about PLO hands and the swings involved and there is plenty of that here. He also reminds me of myself from a year or two ago when I was still in school. It's always interesting trying to balance being in college with doing really well in poker.

Empiremaker2: Blake just started this blog. I've always thought he is a really funny guy and his first post lives up to that. I expect this blog to be very entertaining as long as he updates it. I doubt there will be any poker content, but I actually like that. Don't read this if you are offended by people who aren't PC.
Link: http://www.cardrunners.com/members/index.php?optio... LatestLines2: Another very funny guy. Joe is easily one of the best people I have met through poker. He loves sports and gambling. I assume he'll talk about that stuff a lot and not much poker. Link: http://www.cardrunners.com/members/index.php?optio... _johnnydrama_: He's another one of my good friends that I've met through poker. This guy has insane swings in poker and makes some huge purchases. Link: http://www.cardrunners.com/members/index.php?optio... Caroline: It's the only girl blog I read. Solid blog so far, but it's not updated enough. We're making her update it more though... Link: http://www.cardrunners.com/members/index.php?optio... Something it messed up with this formatting and it's pisisng me off. We're working on cleaning up these blogs though, so look to see some nice improvements in the future...

As expected, my fortunes at the poker tables turned today. I don't really feel like talking about poker right now so basically just know I got some beats, lost 3 buyins, blah blah blah. I'm not the least bit upset as sometimes after I run well and then suffer bad beats I feel as if I somehow deserve them.
One more poker related thing. My friends Pete and Neil officially setup a high stakes poker game for when I am going to be in NYC this summer. The game will be held at a really nice hotel on the Friday I am there, and will be 5k buyin. All of the players besides me are extremely successful finance guys so hopefully I won't look too out of place. I played in the game once last summer and felt at home, even though I was the youngest guy in the room by about ten years. I really enjoy getting to meet/know some of these people as I have the utmost respect for their level of passion and success in the finance world. Let's hope I can make some money this time; last time I lost 12k :).
Today was pretty uneventful. I already ranted about kids with cell phones so I guess I don't have to any more of that. I got a really good workout in today. I ran 2 miles and lifted for about 30 min. I hung out at Blasek's and watched the NBA finals with rick, coop, and blas. Most of my friends go to bed by midnight on the weeknights (usually we go out thursdays but this one was low key for some reason) so after I left Eric's I headed back to the gym to play basketball. I played for about 45 min then came home and got a quick session of poker in.
Tomorrow I'm planning on getting up to play racquetball with Melissa, then get some work done on my mortgage in the afternoon. I'm headed to the city tomorrow night with Melissa to grab some dinner, hang out, and head out for some drinks whoever is down there. She has an info session at a law school she is looking at early Sat. morn and asked if I would come. It should be interesting, but its 9am start seems about 4 hours too early for my tastes. I'll probably be back in Schaumburg Saturday to party with the people back home.
Moving in to my condo thursday; it is going to be sick. I'll get some pics up when I get a chance.

I hardly ever tilt because of a bad beat or something that happens at the poker table. however, i am very susceptible to "life tilt." When something outside of playing poker, whether it business or personal issues, it pisses me off and for whatever reason i lose my ability to win at poker. Well that happened earlier today, and although it is nothing major happened, it caused me to suck at poker. I probably dropped close to 40k at 25-50 today, which is unheard of for me. Truly, i would estimate 25-30k of the loss strictly on setup type situations. I got 2 paired over 2 pair 3 times (HU this is hard to not get stacked with, although once i just KNEW he had turned the 2pair and should have laid it down) and had kicker issues all match long. either way, i definitely played pretty terribly too so that is just unacceptable. All in all, i'm barely ahead for the month now, just a few buyins. So that really sucks because I was up 10+ buyins.
During my rare episodes of tilt, I can't stop thinking about how badly other players play. Even "name" players that the public and themselves think are great players just flat out aren't that good. Part of me now wants to write a tell-all post and tell the world is good and who sucks. I guarantee it would cause a big stir but i don't think losing 40k is enough to warrant riling up a bunch of internet geeks, just yet. :) Don't relax though because your times will all come as soon as I'm done making enough money from poker.
I believe I will just work out all afternoon and then hopefully do something mindless tonight like watching The Fast and the Furious: The Tokyo Drift and then going to a bar.

Taylor arrives fresh from fun times at the Pocketfives.com party at NYNY and the kicking Ultimate Bet Party at Voodoo Lounge at the top of the Rio last night.
The stars were out in force...Phil Hellmuth was beaming and holding court after his 10th wsop win. Annie Duke, Miami John Cernuto, Johan Storakers, Juha Helpi, Devilfish Ulliot with gorgeous escort, mekhi pfifer, john quiet lion brody, and many many others. In addition It was nice to meet LatestLines, Denny Lemieux, Steamboat, gandi9, Taylor and other CR.
Gaucho2121, our Las Vegas promotion winner flew in late, last night and at the last second decided to enter the main event. He is seated at table 28.
Taylor is at table 169 and both are feeling confident of their chances. It was a mob scene as they are close to maxing out the 4 seperate Day 1's. I am next door at the Gaming life expo where all the major poker sites and poker companies have major booths set up. Chris Bigler is seated at the next table doing promo for Pokerstars. Its quite an interesting experience seeing all the people I've watched over the last several years on TV in person.
I will be checking in after each break with updates on Taylor's progress and any other CR members who I run into.
