I ended up winning the game of risk yesterday in dominating fashion. It felt good.

We made our coxed charity video yesterday with tuff_fish. The table consisted of me, em2, taylor and tuff_fish. Tuff got beat up pretty bad and seemed to tilt quit a bit. It should make for a great video. Taylor, tuff and myself all recorded. Keep an eye out for that this weekend.

I'm flying back to Chicago tomorrow. I love it up here in Michigan, but when the weather sucks, it's not great. I'm ready to go back home.

I got beat up today at 5/10. I lost about 5 buyins. A lot of it was actually lost at PLO. I just couldn't really get anything going and I lost a few flips. I also probably should have quit sooner. Oh well.

Check out this PPA video if you haven't. http://tinyurl.com/33k92j.

This video isn't new, but my friend had us watch it again over the weekend and I remembered how funny it was. Bobby Knight used to host a instructional golf show in Indiana. The outtakes from it are great. http://ebaumsworld.com/2006/07/bobbyknightouttakes.html

March 07, 2008

It's been a long week, I'll leave it at that.  This weekend I have a bit of work, but I'll mostly be hanging out and relaxing, probably going out tomorrow night somewhere in Chi.

This is a boring update but I'm going to recommend watching my video I just posted today.  I think it's probably my best 6max video ever, although I think my HU videos are probably my best overall, as I'm a much better at HU than 6max.  I think the difference between this video and most was that I played for about an hour before actually recording.  I got some great reads on my opponents, and also used a HUD, which I don't usually do.  I don't think a HUD is really necessary for high stakes play, because you really get to know your opponents over time, but when there are a bunch of randoms around, it's great to have stats.

Anyway, I'm not going to ramble on anymore, watch the video if you're bored.

later,

tc

Your vid was very good. I wanna see videos like that EVERY time from CR (midstakes 4tabling with solid commentary). Your video was particularly good, and not all vids can be that good just by laws of nature because people will not run into as many interesting spots as you did in that video. Sick 1 outer on river with straight flush over straight flush..

Halo went way downhill after Halo 1. I think COD4 is awesome though, and I'm not a big fan of most realistic, army, first person shooters.

March 19, 2008

Ok, so this post will be about a variety of topics.  I'll get the non poker/CR stuff out of the way first.

-This is the first time since 99 that Illinois hasn't been in the NCAA tourney, and it's pissing me off.  This is our worst season I can ever remember, and it was extremely disheartening.  To top it off, I didn't even get to watch most of the games this year because of the f'ing Big Ten Network not being picked up by Comcast.  I'm getting DirectTV if that is the case next year.  I'm really looking forward to March Madness, though, and I'll probably be watching 8-10 hours a day of basketball Thur-Sun this weekend.

-I'm going to U of I next week to give a speech to a group of 100-150 kids in an entrepeurship class.  I took the class my last semester at school, and it was one of my favorite classes in college.  This weekend I have to figure out what I am going to say, and practice it a little bit.  I honestly don't know what I'm going to talk about, I feel like I know a lot about being an entrepreneur, but it's hard to organize information in a logical and interesting manner.  It's kind of like, most winning poker players know a lot about poker, but a lot of them can't talk eloquently about it.  Hopefully I'm not one of those donks.  This should be a good test run of my speaking skills for an NYU speaking gig Ezra got for me in a couple weeks.

-Onto poker.  I made a heads up video with annette_15 this week.  She was kind enough to send her HH's in so we'll have those added to the video.  We played 3-6nl and I was beating her up pretty good for awhile until she nearly came all the way back at the end.  I think it will make for a good video.

-You guys are going to be pissed, but cts' video for Friday didn't properly record the sound.  He's traveling now, so his next video will be up a week from Friday.  I'm going to fill in, which leads me to my next point.

-Until the last day or so, I've been been crushing, hard.  I'm up 50k+ on my Red Name in 8 days.  I'm down 21k playing above 25/50 (in a very small sample), and up about 70k in 25/50 and below, over about 7500 hands.  It's a  small sample size obviously, but i'm sure my 6max game has DRASTICALLY improved over the past month or so.  I'm doing a much better job mixing up my play, not being so damned robotic, which is easy to do when you are playing 4-6+ tables.  Talking poker with Stinger, peachy, and cts in Santa Barbara also really helped me think about the game from a new perspective.  I'm going to make a 5-10 or 10-20 6max video, playing 4 tables.  My last video of 6max got great reviews, and I think it might have been my best video ever.

Good luck at the tables,

tc

"Talking poker with Stinger, peachy, and cts in Santa Barbara also really helped me think about the game from a new perspective."

I would be greatly interested in hearing you go deeper into that specifically. After all, we subscribe to your site to open our poker minds and change our poker thought, if you have had some realization that is helping your game, tell us further about it.

Well, if Sampson hadn't lured away Gordon Illinois woulda been right up there at the top. Bruce Weber is a great coach and I'm sure he'll have them right back in it next year.

Until then, feel free to root for Michigan State :).

Wow...didn't know Anette played cash at all. If you guys are gonna keep up with the other poker training websites you have to get more tourney specialists to do vids. Cardrunners is BY FAR the best training site for cash game players imo, but your losing half the market by not catering to the MTT and SNGers on a serious level. Anette could be just the big tournament name you need to get people talking about cardrunners as a serious tournament training site.(not to take away from menlo or jeff or anything but annette will get all the Pocket 5ers interested). She already puts alot of time in to 'training' for free by posting her thoughtprocesses of hands on forums and posting HHs etc. I don't even play tounaments but id certainly watch all of her vids.

joining...

been reading your blog and am interested in joining card runners, played liked an addict a year ago for about 3 months had some success but at low limits .10-.25 with hours of waiting for pocket aces and such(no understanding of the game). Seems like a lot of information on the site but really its where to begin. Id like to re learn from scratch because i would imagine i have terrible habbits so is there any suggestion on where exactly to start with all this

Let me know what you guys think. I plan on making more, so any thoughts, comments, or suggestions for future vids are appreciated.

-Brian

PS: Some very good comments on my video - I appreciate them all. I def agree that the video is fairly nitty, but IMO i think that it is an easy, profitable way to play 1/2. LAG styles are very profitable too, but I feel that like a 19/15 style still gets paid off a lot and reduces variance in general.

PPS: Why is being nitty such a bad thing? better than the opposite, lol.

My CardPlayer TV video is out. After watching this again, I am really pleased with it. I think there are a lot of really good tips and concepts discussed about 3betting in the short 12 min video. Hope you guys check it out.

Thanks to everyone for the suggestions HERE and HERE

I shot a 2-table video of 100nl for about 50 minutes.  Play was a little more aggro than normal, which I think makes for a fun video, but more importantly I tried really hard to fill the dead space with some solid content - mostly taken from the suggestions from the two links above.  I tried hard to talk out my reads and go through my thought processes as I played and I think it came across pretty well.  I still have to produce it, but look for it soon from CR.  I'll try to find out when Zimba is gonna post it.

It kinda got me in the video bug, so I decided that I'll shoot another video sometime within the next few days.  Since there were a decent amount of requests for the medium stakes games I'll probably play one (maybe 2) 400nl or 600nl tables, depending on what the tables look like when I do it.  Hopefully CR can post it soon after my 100nl vid.

Look forward to hearing what everyone thinks about it once it gets out.

-Brian

May 25, 2008

I wanted to thank everyone for the positive feedback on my second video, the 100nl video that came out last month. I really appreciated it, and I'm glad that I could bring something new to the low stakes CR lineup. If anyone has any specific questions, feel free to post them here or PM me.

I also made a 50nl video that should be going up soon. It was a solid video that I think was very suitable for 50nl - not a lot of huge concepts that might get lost on the typical 50nl villain. So I was definitely pleased with it. I'll be making another vid soon, a $200nl video, and I wanted to see what kinds of concepts the CR $200nl players would like me to discuss. So if anyone has any requests, now is the time to get them in.  Anything in particular you guys want to see, or would like me to discuss in the vid?

Do you still play poker for a living? Any update on your poker career would be great for readers who originally read and loved your Hyperaggro \$101k challenge...maybe graphs, results, ect....

I got the roll up to about 70k-ish (starting from 1k) and then bought a house. So the majority of it came out. And I do have a job, so I'm not playing full time. But I do plan on starting a new 101k challenge at some point in the future.

Playing small pairs is something I have been thinking about lately. Players at 200NL don't pat off your sets so much and I would like to hear your thoughts on playing small pairs when facing a raise.

Your last vid was great so very much look forward to the next one.

SGB5000

Jun 2, 08 01:57:24

Feel free to not respond to these 2 questions.....but what is your job? And why did you decide to not continue playing poker full time? I had always thought you were going to be playing professionaly for years to come.

Jun 10, 08 22:18:07

hookem, great video, I left a comment on the video page itself regarding my thoughts. I guess I have a question about settling into LAG play early on, as it's a relatively new fit for me. Part of my problem is that I don't have PT running, as playing cash games concertedly is a new venture for me.
I had great success on the first table I sat on employing your methodology, essentially raising and reraising a lot of hands in position, only raising solid hands in EP/UTG, and would occasionally 3-bet from the blinds with trash against players who I had pegged as weak.
My questions are:
1. What do you do when you try to adopt a LAG image early on but are facing lots of 3bets and reraises post-flop against unknown players?
Putting money in light with a marginal hand obviously isn't a winning proposition over time no matter how much the image may pay off (if they stick around long enough for your play to matter in the first place), so should I just be content to fold those hands where I haven't connected enough to rebluff/commit and choose better spots?
2. Cbet or not to cbet?
I tried to mix it up to a fair degree, but I was probably cbetting between 60-80% of flops if I had raised in position. Is this fair? What potential weaknesses are there in being a rampant c-better, hence if I've been firing often with air and then find myself with (say) an open-ender, I continue, get raised... with hands like these (and flush draws) what's your line against a standard .50/1 villain?

Since I had a busy couple of days in Vegas I decided to assume a lazy position today and not do a damn thing. So far I've played a few hours at full tilt. I opened the session up with a huge bluff on the river on a QJ3A3 board. Guy wouldn't fold KK. Quickly down $50. Sweet. I continued to grind and play very solid tight aggressive poker and eventually leave up $55. I played well except for said bluff above.

Muddy's play and explanation in his latest 2/4 video really caught my attention. Something clicked if you will. I really like the way he plays pocket paris, usually raising with any 2 to open. It makes him incredibly unpredictable as his range could be anything. He doesn't do betting tells like limp/call, etc. Probably the most helpful video thus far for me. Thx Muddy.
