What's Your Edge

Yesterday was nice. I somehow decided to not run KK into AA all that often and won a nice 6 buyins at 2/4nl. Today, I ran KK into AA 3 times and AK into AA another, to lose a total of 2 buyins. It seems like every time I have a nice winning day, it is usually 2+ buyins. Every time I have a losing day, it is 2 buyins max. Now that I say that, im sure I am going to go on a horrorific downswing and lose like 20 buyins. I am heading to New Orleans in 2 days for the wsop circuit event. Hopefully that will give me a shade of practice before the wsop. That is going to be a loooong 2 months. I wonder what the odds of me being the lucksack to win 2 wsop events this year are...3000:1? Maybe worse.
I'm gonna be trying to keep up a blog here at CR.
For those who don't know me, my name is Phil Galfond. I'm a 22 year old poker player living in Madison, WI.
I play on FTP as OMGClayAiken. I'm known on twoplustwo.com as Jman28.
I'm spending this summer in Vegas playing WSOP events. I actually have a trip report saved on another computer from the $5k 6 handed event which I went deep in. Hopefully I'll get that posted up here soon.
In addition to playing, I write monthly articles for Bluff Magazine. I've appeared on Cash Poker as well as a couple of embarrassing brief appearances on WSOP broadcasts. I'll also be on next season of High Stakes Poker for all of about 4 minutes.
So, basically, I'm pretty important.
I'm not sure how familiar CR members are with me, so I'm hoping to field any questions you may have. Please comment on this post with anything you'd like to know about me.
I'm looking forward to becoming part of your community. I have plans to make a video for CR and perhaps many more.
Nice to meet you.
-Phil
In less than 12 hours the 2008 WSOP begins with the $10k PLH event...
Two of my favorite memories during my time with CardRunners were my two times covering the WSOP. I had joined January 1 of 2006, consulted CR that spring, and was hired in June. I flew out in early July to Vegas to meet my new bosses and meet the entire CR team of Taylor and Andrew at the WSOP. I met them and railed some of their friends like Jsup, JohnnyDrama, and Denny Lemiuex. CR was not well known and it was too late to get a press pass, so I percevered with the general public crowds and did some basic coverage of the play of CR affiliated players. I was only there a few days, but it was very eye opening to see all the TV poker stars I had seen for years in the flesh. This was the last year of the big bashes thrown by the poker sites; I recall the UB party hosted by Phil Hellmuth and company in the Voodoo Lounge at the Rio as being particularly fun.
The following year, CardRunners had grown signficantly and I suggested that I apply for a press pass and more professionally cover all CardRunners members for the entire Main Event. While every other press team had multiple members who often worked in shifts through the press room, I relished the challenge of singlehandedly providing coverage for CR. For the 17 days of play, I was at the Rio for all but a handful of hours. The typical days at the Rio started at 11 am with play beginning at noon and ending anywhere from 2-4 am. It was quite hectic managing the massive playing floor and then running back to the freezing press room to blog and post about what I had witnessed.
What I loved most was meeting CardRunners members and pros that I had only dealt with by email or IM. I've always been a natural rooter and railer. I love supporting my friends as they pursue their dreams. The atmosphere at the WSOP is like no other time of the year. It is the only time you get ALL the known characters of poker to come out. Anyone who has done anything ever in poker is present, whether they play a ton or not. It is a very lively scene and there is much frivolity that goes on inside and outside of the Rio. People come to the WSOP at a shot at fame and money. There are great highs and many, many lows. Your character and stamina is tested in ways you never thought imagined. It sure was for me, standing, walking, and reporting for those long hours each day while dealing with my painful sciatic condition. It is the time of the everyman, because everyone thinks they have a shot.
While there are many stories I could retell, I mostly just worked my tail off those 3 weeks and left the partying to others. I was there to work. I met a lot of great people and was able to watch one CR member, Lee Childs, make it all the way to the final table. I got to know Lee Childs, Robin Bergen and Sergio Rodriguez (the last 3 CR standing) pretty well during those two plus weeks, meeting their families and railing together many hours. I helped Lee get representation and sponsorships for the final table, as well as getting a CR patch on him.
This year, I will probably only fly in for a few days around the Main Event to see some friends. I need to prioritize continued progress on the site development so it can launch as soon after the series is over as possible. But I can already sense the enthusiasm and anticipation for what might happen this year at the WSOP. What dreams will be made? Good luck to those that enter. I hope that with the much larger CR team in Vegas this year they can provide some compelling coverage to follow.
So my boss was nice enough to offer me a personal leave of absence for travelling and wsop. Pretty sure I am going to have to take him up on it since I'm actually really loving it out here lately and am not sure I want to jet quite yet!
Poker has been pretty blah lately and I've been losing my ass!!!!!!!!!!! Hopefully I can start running good and get a nice confidence boost back before leaving for Vegas.
Nothing much else really going on in my world except for doing a lot of laundry and wondering why I don't pay like $80 a month for a housecleaner!!!!!!!!!!!!! Actually, I'm going to look into that right now.
Hope everyone is running hot and gl to all the CR guys at WSOP!!!
Peace,

I think this is the expected date that I can plan on winning a 60/40 coin flip in a tournament.
I'm out after only a little more than 2 hours of play.
Absolutely terrible.
I'm undeniably dissapointed in this years live WSOP tournament results thus far....
Will let you guys know what I am playing in next as soon as I decide.

ARE YOU PLAYING WELL AND HAVING BAD LUCK IF SO KEEP TRYING IF YOUR PLAYING BAD COME HOME LOVE DAD
I decided to play in the Senior's event at the WSOP. You have to be 50 to enter. [1] A couple of people have been kind enough to tell me that they did think I was old enough to play. Unfortunately, the structure is obscenely fast (2K starting stack, 25/50 blinds). So I'll have to get lucky quickly to survive any length of time. But I haven't played a WSOP event in something like 14-15 years, so it'll be fun to do.
Think thoughts about me flopping sets.
Regards, Lee
[1] Like the ladies' event, it's not at all clear that Harrah's/WSOP has the legal footing to limit entry in the events. But they did turn away a couple of guys from entering the ladies' event, so apparently they thought they had the legal footing, or they thought that the turned-away players wouldn't press the issue.

Wait, this is the seniors, so set mining 40x is fine. Oh, and good luck.
I already put in one session of 1k hands today and finished up about 1 BI in 50NL. Not that many interesting hands so far, I will put in another session later and post some hands then.
I also decided to try the WSOP qualifiers on stars. They have these 6 step SnGs for all the EPT events and now they use them for the WSOP as well. I took 500FPP and played step 1 and:
Dear Swoop_007,
You finished the tournament in 1st place.
You have won an admission ticket to 'WSOP Step 2'. This ticket allows you
to participate only in a tournament of this type. Tickets are not redeemable
for cash or Tournament Dollars (T$); if you register and then unregister from
the tournament, your ticket will be returned.
Woohoo, 1 down 5 to go. The play was really bad, I ran my stack up to 4000 when I held QQ on a 9 7 J flop and the other guy shoved. I called and he showed me 22. He doesnt suck out on me and I´m practically through to round 2.
I am excited about how far I can extend this. By step 3 I will have reached the limits I usually played when I was playing MTTs and SnGs only so the play will definitely get better.
l8er,
KK
So today I had some time to finally get some hands in, went very well although I did stay up all night and all day so I could go to sleep in the evening and wake up early in the morning like 4am, rather then sleep all day and be up all night.
After todays session Im def on track to make this months goal, the Nl50 hands were played because FTP caught my rakeback account, so while I had my funds frozen I had a friend transfer me a few hundred bucks so I could keep busy the 2 days I was waiting to receive my bankroll back. Anyways turns out I might have a prop bet with a friend, he thinks I cannot make 10k in a 31 day period playing Nl50 Heads up only, I think I can and Im getting 2:1 On my money, will see if he actually go's through with it.
Anyways here's a screenshot of my Stats this month + a few hands, Def Unsustainable but lifetime at 1/2 Im a 22/100 Winner.

Not me unfortunatley, but congrats to tightagressive from pokerforums.org for his victory at the Sunday Million. I know his posting there has helped my game a lot, and it's amazing to see him take down this huge event for a $120K prize. I'm sure we'll see him taking on the best for a bracelet next year when he's old enough to play the WSOP.
