Aruba has been an awesome time so far.  I'll definitely write up a decent recap of it, but for now I'll just write up Day 1 of the tournament.

I got to my table to find out I was playing with my good friend Brian (used2bgood).  I've been playing online with Brian since 2003, and he was actually the first kid I know to make it to the 25/50nlhe games on UB when they first opened up.  He's a true grinder, I often call him Paul because he reminds me of a Paul Wasicka type.  He's also notorious for running hilariously bad at the most inopportune times, for example, in a WPT event when folded to him on the button, he shoved QQ w/30 bb's (lol) because it was the money bubble and he NEEDED to cash in the event otherwise he'd have less than $1000 to his name.  The tightest player at the table INSTA called with AA and he went out 1 out of the money.  Some old guy immediately jumped out of his seat a few tables over and screamed "OH MY GOD I MADE THE MONEY, I FOLDED DOWN TO 300 CHIPS AND I MADE THE MONEY!!!!"  I could go on about used2bgood stories but that one just came to mind for some reason.

Anywho, we were sitting across the table from each other so we basically just bs'd the whole day.  I hope someone reading this blog was at my table because they can make a comment and attest to how ridiculous the conversation was.  It was like we were playing a $5 homegame, I honestly didn't feel like I was playing seriously because everyone was just chatting and having fun.  It helped that I lost 2/3 of my stack in the first 3 levels so I really couldn't do anything but sit and wait for cards, so I could actually just BS with everyone and not worry about losing tons of EV.

An interesting hand came up after the dinner break.  There was a kid who was monking around every single time I raised.  I would estimate he raised me 80% of the times I opened from mid or late position, and he was sitting directly to my left.  I honestly think there is a chance he could see my cards.  I thought about this later as I caught a glimpse of another player's cards (I told him to make sure to cover them up), but I realized that I hadn't been covering mine so it wouldn't surprise me if this guy had gotten a peak at my hands.  I'm rambling a bit, but anyway, this guy was seriously playing pretty crazy (but well) and then the following hand came up.

Monk opens to 850 at 150-300 25 level.  Aruba has these weird chips that are different colors than the normal WPT chips.  My friend Brian thinks the raise is to 1350 chips, because it is a yellow (normally 1k but in this case 500) and then 3 blacks and 2 greens.  So he tosses out 1500 to make the call, but it actually is a min raise.  He is clearly visibly trying to call but the dealer makes the raise stand.  At this point I go "sick angle, man, way to to slowplay aces."

So the kid obviously 4-bets him to 4800 as Brian clearly didn't mean to raise and the kid also probably doesn't give anyone else credit for thinking on the level he is.  I want to be clear I'm not knocking the kid, I probably wouldn't have given anyone credit myself.  So Brian calls the 4800, leaving about 22k left in each of their stacks.  The flop comes down T high and the kid just shoves all in, Brian at this point goes "this looks so bad, i'm so sorry, i call."  Brian flips over Aces and the whole table gasps.  The kid had 55 for a random bluff and is sent to the beach.

What was so crazy about the hand was that it 1) looked like Brian was trying to angleshoot by "accidentally" minraising and 2) me, the kid who everyone knew was good friends with Brian and we had just got back from dinner break 10 minutes before was openly talking at the table saying "nice angle," which would lead everyone to believe it was less likely that it was actually happening because I truly did believe that it was an accidental raise (which it was).  So it really looked like on break or something we had talked about a way to angleshoot the table, but the kid was a very good sport about the whole thing and although he was disappointed, I think he knew we weren't trying any funny business.

So I was down to 5k when someone raised to 850 in EP and one other person called in mid position.  I look at 77 on the button and shove all in, which I'm told is "very close"  to being a shove or a fold.  I did figure I was getting called but the guy raising EP was loose so I don't think it's a horrible position to try to double or triple up in.  I obviously flop a set and I am at 11k.

7 hands later, I am in sb with JJ.  The same guy opens in MP and I really don't know what to do with this hand.  I have about 40 bb's so I could make it like 8 bb's then bet/fold or bet/call depending on the flop, I could just jam but then I am almost never getting called by worse, or I could just flat call.  I decided to flat call and the flop came T62dd..  The player bet 1k and I made it 3k, leaving myself with like 7k behind.  He INSTA shoved all in and at this point i had to call.  He had 78dd for the gutshot draw and the flush draw.  Somehow I dodged and now I was up to 22k.

For the last two levels I got no cards whatsoever.  None.  I just really played patiently and hung around, so I'll take it.  I have about 22k goign into day 2, the average is 27k.  I'm pretty happy with how things went, all things considered.  I'll blog ya later, gonna go lay on the beach.

I didn't get a chance to update my blog from last weekend's trip to NYC and random Chicago stuff.  I am actually in the airport again and I have some spare time so I'll try to make a little update on stuff.

Last week I was in New York for two nights.  I got a chance to hang out with Gaucho and a co-worker of his plus some of his friends.  We had a nice dinner at Wolfgang's in Tribeca, which is basically exactly like Peter Lugar's for any of you that have been there.  The guy who started Wolfgang's used to work at Lugar's and you can tell everything is almost exactly the same - the menus even look the same.  I am not too much of a foodie when it comes to steak places because I am not the biggest steak afficianado out there.  That said, the steak was very good and I am glad I had it.  Unfortunately, I continue to run dry ice cold (yeah, i said that) at credit card roulette and I lost yet again.  I would estimate I am down $8000 in credit card rouletting over the past 6 months, probably about $6500 lower than my expectation.  Thanks CC roulette Gods.

I got a chance to play in a poker game last Friday night.  It's a private game that goes every so often, just a really friendly game with some pretty well-to-do people.  I'm not going to go into too much detail about it, only because it's a private game.  I'll definitely write up some interesting hands at times but that's about it.  Last week didn't go so hot for me unfortunately, it definitely took me some adjusting to get used to how the game plays and I think I've got that part down for next time (tonight).  I'm going to play in the game, get a couple hours of sleep, then meet up with Stinger and Wiggins who have a layover at JFK to go to Aruba.  The three of us will head there with some friends for the next 6 days.  It will just be a chance to relax, hit the beach, and have some good fun with some of my good friends.  I don't think I'll play too much poker there, if any.

I also wanted to mention one thing I don't get a chance to talk about too much on here.  I think one of my favorite things about my job is that I can meet new people in almost any city in the world at any given time.  In my last blog, I mentioned that I was in NYC and that people should PM me if they wanted to meet up.  Kevin and Chris, two long time CR members whom I had never met PM'd me and we grabbed lunch with another one of my friends.  At first glance, this might seem pretty weird or awkward; four guys who had never met before getting lunch.  But it really is cool to be able to meet other people from different parts of the world that have some common interests.  I suppose I'll say this until one day I wind up chopped up in a meat locker by some creep I meet on the internet, but until then, I've got all my limbs in tact and I'm feeling fine.  People that aren't heavily entrenched in the online poker community, or any online community for that matter, probably don't understand this phenomenon, but I've met some of my absolute best friends on the internet, guys I'll be friends with for the rest of my life.

So, on that note, if anyone happens to be in Aruba this week for the UB tournament, or happens to live in Aruba, feel free to PM me and we can grab drinks at the bar at our hotel.  I actually saw a post on 2p2 this week from some guy I had met in Aruba 3 years ago.  I honestly can't remember meeting him, I think I was a bit buzzed that whole week, but apparently we talked about CardRunners and over three years later he finally signed up.  Pretty crazy, but I've definitely learned that you might as well put yourself out there and meet as many people as possible.  You never know what will come of it and if nothing else it makes life a bit more interesting.

Anyway, I hope you guys have a nice weekend.  Hopefully I run good tonight!

Taylor

PS - I'm going to make a video or two with Stinger in Aruba.  If you have suggestions please leave them here.

PPS - If you live in the DC area I just did a radio interview with 106.7 WJFK for a new show called "Mediocre Poker," which is hosted by the guys who do the normal morning show on that channel.  They tell me they are "poker geeky" and are actually CR members too, so they invited me to come on and chat with them.  I think it was actually a pretty funny interview, even though most of the people reading this blog have probably already heard about all of the stuff we talked about.  So I guess if you love/hate me you should check that out this weekend, it airs Sunday at 6pm ET.

Just wanted to say Tay it was definitely a pleasure meeting you and just shooting the shit for a few hours in NYC... I was actually talking to a buddy of mine, told him that I met up with you for lunch last weekend and he said, "he just met you guys out of the blue? If I were him, I would have brought security." But, glad it worked out ;).

I decided to take a quick trip to New York for Th/Friday nights.  I just got in a few minutes ago and got settled in at my hotel room.  Normally I just crash on Gaucho/Ezra's couch but since I got in during the afternoon and Gaucho works fairly late I figured I'd get a room and just relax .  I got a bit of work done and now am just waiting to meet him and some friends at dinner.  Apparently Cole and his gf are in NY too at the yankees game tonight.  Hopefully we'll all get to meet up afterwords but I have no idea when they are going back (his gf has work tomorrow).

I came out here to play in a poker game friday night.  Basically some friends and friends of friends in the finance industry play a pretty high stakes game once a month or so.  They needed an extra guy this month and since I wasn't doing anything exciting Friday night in Chicago I said I'd come out of the game.  I think the game will be fairly high stakes, probably 20k buy-in with 25-50 blinds, but I think it escalates as people lose some and re-buy.  Hopefully I can have a good night at the tables, but I am mostly interested in hearing what these guys have to say about the brewing financial crisis.  I've been following the news pretty closely lately and it definitely doesn't look good.  We'll see what happens, but hopefully I can learn a thing or two tomorrow night while having a good time.  It's funny, in my experiences playing with these guys before they have always been extremely respectful and seemingly genuinely interested in having me around.  Obviously to them it'd be easy to treat me like the no name twentysomething poker player that I am, but I've always been pleasantly surprised how most ultra successful people have a lot of respect for other talented people, even if my talents are seemingly insignificant to someone in their position.  Just writing about this game really has me hoping that I can be in a similar position to them sometime in the future.

Anyway, shoot me a PM or something if there's anything cool going on in NYC later tonight or tomorrow afternoon (I'm in tribeca).  I'm booked from now until the late evening, and then tomorrow evening all night long.  I'll be flying home at 7am Sat morning after the game is over.  If I have time I will make an update with some interesting hands that I played.  Saturday afternoon in Chicago I will catch up on sleep, then go out for my roommates birthday at night.  Sunday morning at 8am, 7 friends and I are tailgating at the Bears game, then hopefully watching us beat the Bucs before I head home and probably die of sleep deprivation.  Note to self: stop abusing body.

September 15, 2008

I wanted to quickly make a short post about a poker charity tournament being held in the Chicagoland Area.   There’s a $250 charity tournament for a WSOP seat being held in Palatine, IL, on Oct. 4th.  The proceeds from the tournament benefit Clearbrook, a non-profit organization devoted to enhancing the lives of children and adults with developmental disabilities.  I know they need quite a few more people to sign up to get to the 200 person goal, so if you are interested in playing a (soft!) poker tourney with a chance to go to Las Vegas for the WSOP, you might check this out.

For more info on the tourney: https://secure.digital-community.com/english/clearbrook.org/events/event_calendar_secure.html?req=calendar/event&eventUniqID=11220-0--

For more info on the Charity: www.clearbrook.org

I might as well provide a little life info here for those of you that have bothered to read this far.  I'm really loving the weekends lately.  It's so nice to have the NFL on Sunday's; immersing myself in fantasy football and low stakes sports betting for 8 hours on Sunday is the best way to deconnect myself from work and the internet.  Over the past year or so, I've done an atrocious job seperating my personal time from work time; it all just seems to blend together.  I always have email access, I'm on my computer for probably 10+ hours per day, and I'm generally always thinking about CardRunners, poker, or both.  I'm making a conscious decision to try to change all of that, as I think I'm going to burn myself out if I don't ever take any time for myself.

So with that new Sunday motto, I set out to watch the Bears, followed by a few more NFL games and Entourage.  Amazingly enough, even though the Bears blew a 17-3 lead soley because of penalties and poorly timed fumbles, it felt great to spend the afternoon with friends watching the game.  Two of my roommates and a few of my other friends got tickets to go see the Cubs play the Brewers in Milwaukee, and a couple people offered me tickets to the game, but I figured I'd rather sit around and watch football for the day instead.  Big, big mistake, Carlos Zambrano threw a no-hitter, the first for the Cubs since 1972.  I'd estimate I've watched most or all of 50+ Cubs games per year since I was 7 years old.  We're talking about something like 1000 Cubs games, probably more actually as when I was a kid I would watch literally almost every game.  I've seen Cubs pitchers take no-hitters into the 6th and 7th innings a few times, and Zambrano has actually gone into the 8th and I THINK the 9th before.  It sucks to not only have not watched this game because I was watching football and Entourage, but I probably would have gone had I not specifically planned on doing nothing all Sunday.  Sigh, it's still a great feat and I'm happy for Z.

Take it easy,
Taylor

D'oh!

Oh man. To see somebody throw a no-hitter. Ouch.

You know, Taylor, look at it this way (through the lens of chaos)... if you'd been there, he might not have thrown the no-hitter. By staying home, you prevented the butterfly alighting on a different flower, and a little gust of wind would have come up and caused a squib grounder to slip through the infield. In the 8th inning.

Well done on preserving the no-hitter for everybody else.

Taylor I almost feel bad for you man. But then I remember the fact that youdon't give a crap about anyone butyour self and your donkey friends. I am very disappointed in you man. I remember talking to you in 2005 before you "made it"

I can understand why you would want to be quiet for the last month but I think that BT and Cardrunners owes something back to the "community"

When you guys first came out with that bullcrap about having separate accounts for videos I was one of the first to question it. You guys claimed that .edu was going to clarify it for people but I don't think you guys were totally clean about that.

BT is prime example.........LOL at ur charity freeroll. I will not donate.

September 09, 2008
Hi

So I recently took a bit of a hiatus from blogging. I can’t promise it won’t happen again, but I can promise that when I am blogging it will be fairly interesting or at least arguably well written. As an aside, it’s become painfully clear that hours and hours spent talking on Gchat/AIM have ruined my punctuation and grammar skills. So I guess what I mean by well written is that I hope both my content and writing style is entertaining, even if there are some other obvious glaring weaknesses in my formatting.

I’ll post a blog talking a little bit about why I didn’t write for so long, but I really don’t want to get into that yet. It’s going to take some time to organize my thoughts, and I’d rather just get back into making some regular life updates for now.

Let’s see, where do I start. I’ve moved into a new house in Chicago. I’m living with four roommates in a 6 bedroom house in Lincoln Park. It’s a really great setup for me, we have an office which I don’t use, and I luckily have the master bedroom. My closet is about the same size as many bedrooms in Chicago, and my room is probably the same size as the four rooms I lived in the past six years, all put together. I’ve never had a nice bedroom before and I’m really liking it, even though I’m not fully unpacked yet. I’ve got a nice bathroom to myself, with a rain shower and a hot tub which I will probably never use. The house itself is very modest, it’s old, and except for my bedroom, very cramped. I like it a lot though and the location couldn’t be better for me, about an 8 minute walk from my office.

It’s been a real pain in the ass moving all of my stuff halfway across the city. I had to grease the moving guys to move my kegerator with a full keg inside (I feel really bad about this in hindsight, man that must have been heavy), and it took literally 2-3 days of packing/unpacking to get things finalized. What I have realized is how foolish it is to accumulate useless stuff. There are so many possessions that I have piled up over the past few years – clothes I don’t wear, shoes, memorabilia, and more crap that is so worthless I can’t even classify it. I’ve made a decided effort to not accumulate more tangible items than I need. I’ve done very well over the past year, but before that I was pretty terrible. I’d always buy a DVD just because I thought I might want to watch it someday, ditto with video games that I haven’t even opened. It’s just stupid, and not to mention, a huge waste of money. I guess I realized that I’d much rather spend my money on travel, eating out, sporting events, and other life experiences that I’ll enjoy much more than some $250 sweater that I wore twice and then ruined with some hot sauce from a burrito I ate at 4am. I’m not exactly sure where I’m going with this, but I just like living a simple life where I don’t have to be tied down by all the useless crap I own. If there was a way I could realistically get rid of my car, I think I would do it. Maybe I will sell it or give it away to family if I think I can actually get away without a car.

We decided to end the summer with a party at our new house. What a great idea that was. My roommates put the whole thing together and I basically just told a couple friends and they got the word out. It was a little disappointing because a few of our friends already had parties/events planned that weekend so some people I would have liked to be there couldn’t make it, but that actually might have been for the better. I’d estimate our downstairs has something like 1000 sq feet of space, and we had very damn near close to 100 people packed in it at one point. This was because our neighbors called the police around midnight because our backyard (which is not very big) was completely filled with people and there was music that was pretty loud. I was a little disappointed in my neighbors because we have been living there for 2 months now (my roommates moved in while I was in Las Vegas in July) and we have barely made a peep late at night. All they would have had to do was come over and tell us to come inside at midnight (reasonable on a Saturday night) and we would have happily obliged. Instead, the head of the neighborhood association came over and said “Will you guys please move inside? Also, I have to call the police either way, this is my duty.” WTF? I mean, we weren’t breaking any laws, everyone was 21, and we said we would go inside. Apparently the police came in the backyard and in the house, but honestly it was so packed in there that I never even saw them. Overall, the night was a ton of fun until the end, when I think everybody had a bit too much to drink. Fortunately we have awesome friends who are respectful and don’t steal things, so although everyone was hurting the next morning, our place was surprisingly in tact and nothing of note was missing.

The next morning, I got bagels for our apartment and prepared to watch football for most of the day with my friends who decided to stay over for the afternoon. Right before the first kickoff, a family from the neighborhood came over to scold us. Since I was the only person living in the house at the time, I had to take the wrath. Honestly, she was very polite in what she said, but I really disagree with what she did say. She brought her husband and young child over, and said “I want to show you the family that you kept up all of last night.” I felt very bad looking at their young child, but I was a little surprised that they didn’t at least tell us to come keep it down. As I said, immediately after we were told to keep it quiet we went inside and turned off any music that could be heard outside, which I feel is pretty responsible way to have a party. She went on to say that there is no way we should be having that many people in our house, and this is a family neighborhood, not a college neighborhood. I wasn’t going to argue whether or not we lived in a college neighborhood or not (Depaul is 4 blocks away, and there is a bar 100 feet from our house), but I really don’t know how someone could think that they can tell us how many people we can have in our house. I was very polite to her because she politely said all of this to me, but I really don’t agree with this situation. There have been countless times before where neighbors of mine have had parties late into the night, I think it’s just something you should expect when you live in a big city in a popular area. I think I’m just writing this down now so that someday when I have a family and am pissed off that some punk ass college kids like myself are having a party, I can look back at this and realize how old I have become. Sorry for that.

I’ve been telling people in Chicago for the past two weeks that the Bears are going to surprise people. This is unlike me as I am typically not a “homer” and am generally pretty pessimistic about the Bears and Cubs, in particular. I did not expect us to beat the Colts on the road, much less blow them out, but hey, I’ll take it. I’m excited because our next few games are very winnable. I’m going to the home opener in two weeks with some friends, and then it’s off to Aruba for 5 days. I’ve been to Aruba five years straight now, and I think there’s a very strong chance this is the last year I go. One of my good friends, Mike, decided to quit being a professional player and get a job, so he can’t go. I feel like over the next year some more of my friends will lose that desire as well, and we’ll probably have a smaller and smaller group to go on some of these poker excursions. It’s been a wonderful ride, and it’s certainly not over yet for me, but I’m realistic in that some of my best times in the poker world may be behind me. Who am I to complain though, I’m having a great time and am lucky to be in the position I am in.

I’ll try to be updating a bit more regularly now, this felt good to write!

Bonus: party pictures!

Early on in the party, some of the girls outside (my best girl friends from high school here):

Just so beaumont never forgets this.  VERY long story.  I'll tell it sometime, maybe.  At least it was late and many of the people had cleared out.

Priceless face by Marisa here, what a good time she was having at mostly my expense!  Melissa looks bored.

Crap!

I don't usually comment but I couldn't agree more with this.."I’m not exactly sure where I’m going with this, but I just like living a simple life where I don’t have to be tied down by all the useless crap I own."

I just graduated college and moved to LA and now decided to move to NYC and I wish I didn't have so much crap it's unreal. All the "baller" crap like 40" TVs that IU got in college are causing me a serious headache now.

ftp bots...

to FTP red pros and FTP!

what are you guys doing with the bots issue at FTP? a friend of mine d/led a bot from
">www.bonusbots.com and showed me how it works. tho he tried it only at the play money tables i am sure there are a lot of people using it at the real money tables. and the thing is most people might use it and just switch it to "super tight" mode and just get rake back monthly.

i think you are not doing everything you can on this issue as these bot makers seem to have FTP as their primary target. and also i think pokerstars is doing a good job catching bots as bonusbots and icmbots seem to stay away from that site.

please do something on this issue. thanks.

Taylor, that party looked like a lot of fun. I think you will really enjoy Lincoln Park. I just moved from Clark and Armitage to Ohio street and although downtown living is very cool, the whole feel of Lincoln Park cannot be beat. Greatest two years of my life.

Cheers and good luck!

Amazon.com recommends "FLIP: How to Find, Fix, and Sell Houses for Profit" and more.

I'm not so sure about that, Amazon.  I guess this is a welcome recommendation over the usual "Amazon.com recommends Crushing Limit Hold'em," or whatever random emails I usually get.

Today I came into the office late because there was a repair guy at my house this morning.  I am moving out soon so all of the little things that we’ve been avoiding fixing for months are getting fixed up.   I suppose it’s a subtle brag that I can come in late if I have something I need to fix at the house, but that’s not the best part of my job.  I walked into the office and Lee, Kevin, Andrew, and Caroline were working at their desks.  After getting a glass of water and returning towards my office, I noticed upon closer inspection that Lee and Andrew were both gambling on the internet, and Kevin was watching gambling related videos.  It’s pretty awesome that at this job you can be gambling at work and not only is it not frowned upon, it’s actually encouraged.  I proceeded to say this aloud, walk over to Andrew’s desk and critique how he played a HU PLO hand, then walk over to my office to get to work.   I probably should stop being so emo in general, life isn’t bad.

gambling at work would be my dream. instead, all i can do at work is sneak on cardrunners all day and post in the forums/read blogs. can't even watch the vids. so sad.

i got a couple of quick 150 hand plo sessions in before when my managers weren't around. but yeah mostly my day of constantly surfing cardrunners and 2p2, with my left hand permanently on the alt+tab combo on my keyboard ready to switch over to a spreadsheet whenever i hear foot steps approaching. god damn.

i had to alt+tab like 8 times while typing up this response. god daaaaamn ppl go do work and stop walking around my desk.

It looks like Bennigans is closing its doors, after filing for bankruptcy today.  It’s funny; I’ve always loved that damn monte cristo sandwich, even though I haven’t found the time to go there in over 5 years.

http://money.cnn.com/2008/07/29/news/companies/ben...

For those of you that don’t know, the monte cristo is ham, turkey, swiss, and some sweet sauce served in fried bread and topped with powdered sugar.  It’s a walking heart attack, but it’s like eating breakfast lunch and dinner at the same time, and I’m not just talking about the amount of calories you’ll consume.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monte_Cristo_sandwich...

I was just thinking the other day about how things change in the restaurant industry, and in business in general.  For example, it’s no shock to me that Bennigans is struggling.  There are an abundance of middle tier restaurants these days.  10 years ago it seemed like if you wanted to go to a middle tier restaurant you pretty much just went to Applebees, TGI Friday’s, or something of the like.  Now there are a lot more restaurants that are slightly pricier, but at least appear to have fresher food and a much better ambiance.  Examples of these places would be California Pizza Kitchen or PF Chang’s.  It seems these places have basically are just modernized versions of the aforementioned places, but they capitalize on the fact that Americans are generally willing to overextend themselves at any chance they get., particularly if it’s seen as “superior” status-wise amongst their peers.   In this vein, it helps that places like Bennigans and TGI Friday’s seem to have a stigma of being old, boring, cheap, and unhealthy, when the new places are just as unhealthy and cost more, but people perceive them as superior in all categories.  For some reason Americans usually label inexpensive things “cheap,” which has a negative connotation.

I do predict that we are going to see these mid-tier restaurants (both old and new) struggle in the near future and people are eventually going to realize that cheap doesn’t necessarily mean bad.  That’s a pretty obvious statement to make I guess, as it’s no secret that with a poor economy what I just stated is likely to happen, but I guess the real point I wanted to make is that I hope that the people of our country do actually realize that cheap doesn’t mean bad, and that people stop looking at debt as a necessary evil for everything in life.  You don’t NEED 3 credit cards at 22 years old, you WANT them so you can buy the designer clothes or the fancier house or car.  Sorry for that rant.

Anyway, I think I’ll be making a monte cristo sandwich sometime soon.  Who is with me?

July 22, 2008

I’m back, baby, trying to get into the blog of things again.  My blog has been hovering between mediocre and completely unreadable over the past 4-6 months.  In actuality, I’m a decent writer with some mildly entertaining things to say, but when I force myself to write even if I’m not feeling it…well, I already said what happens then.  I’m just going to blog about some random happenings, including a lot of things I heard and saw in Las Vegas this summer.  I don’t really know how this will turn out but there should be some interesting tidbits to follow.

Funny lines from Vegas:

“You’ll be broker than piss on a plate if you play like that!” - A southern gentleman I played with in the $2500 6max event, after someone talked about some mildly bad play someone else made, probably akin to overplaying Ace Queen in a 6max NLHE game (not the biggest error in the world).  I love hearing phrases like these from southern guys, they tend to be huge exaggerators (which I find funny in and of itself) and the enthusiasm with which they say them is amusing.

“He went through [his chips] like grits through a goose!” – The same gentleman talking about a young kid who went broke when I set over setted him on the first hand of the tournament.

“I won’t eat a Salmon but I like to see it on the menu” – My roommate Joe, after complaining about the lack of choices on the menu at the restaurant we are at.  My response: “First of all, that’s a ridiculous thing to say if you don’t even like fish.  Second of all, Salmon is on the menu, it’s the last dish at the bottom.”  We all proceed to burst out laughing.

Guy on plane, after reminiscing to his friend about some crazy Vegas story that he didn’t want his friends back home to hear about:  “Yeah, but good thing what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas.”
Friend: “No it doesn’t, people actually always talk about what happens in Vegas.”  Guy:  Yeah, you’re right.  So what, that was awesome!”

Overall Vegas Impression:  There were a lot more Europeans this year than I ever noticed before.  Both playing poker and gambling at the casinos, the Europeans disregard for the value of the American Dollar was very apparent to me.  Good for them though, if I could go to Europe for at least  a 40% discount, I’d go a few times per year.  Hopefully we’ll (America) be back someday, but I’m starting to doubt that.

Ruined Dreams:  Gus Hansen ruined my dreams of running off to an island somewhere for the indefinite future.  I staked some of my friends for the Main Event, with 2 of them making the money and one getting very deep.  With 219 people left and Day 4 or 5 almost over, My friend has 600k in chips with 550 an average stack.   I can’t remember what the exact blinds were here but Gus opened in late position and called a 3bet to 90k+ (like 15% of effective stacks) with the good old ATo.  The flop obviously comes down AT9 and my friend busts with his AQ.  There’s really not a whole lot he can do there, there’s almost no way he could have played that hand and not gone broke, given how big the blinds are and how Gus will put the money in with any Ace.

Overall I made money on the Main Event, but barely.  I played three other tournaments and took brutal beats in two of them.  Just one time I want to win a big tourney or have someone I stake win one.  That would be awesome.  I say this every year, but I think next year I’m going to play more tournaments.  I want to go really deep in a poker tournament before my poker career is all said and done.  I’m not going to be grinding the WSOP events when I have a family some day, so I better get cracking over the rest of my 20’s.

My friend is XYZ, he’s awesome at poker:  So I went to the Jimmy Buffet concert in Alpine Valley, Wisconsin this past weekend with some of my friends.  A group of 60 of us rented a “party bus” which drove us there from my roommate’s lake house.  It was quite a site to see, as another 20 people or so met us at the concert.  I didn’t know a lot of the people in the group because it is mostly my roommate’s friends from high school, but I knew enough people and met others which made it fun.

About four hours into the tailgate, I received the obligatory “Hey, so you play poker?” question from some kid.  I responded with “yes, I play some poker.”  He goes on to tell me about his friend JBmantis who I think is actually GBmantis who I think is a tournament player who I remember from posting at PocketFives.  Anyway, apparently this kid is so good that he won $50k one day and $60k the next week!!  I told him that I thought his friend must be a good player because that is very tough to do, and thought we’d move the conversation on to something else.  Well, it didn’t quite work out that way because he started asking me about my poker playing.  I sort of brushed it aside and I don’t even really remember what I said, so he starts to tell me: “my friend is actually sponsored by PartyPoker and FullTiltPoker.”  At this point I said: “that’s actually not possible, because ignoring the fact that PartyPoker doesn’t take US customers and certainly won’t sponsor US-only internet players, FTP and Party are not going to sponsor the same kid, it just wouldn’t make sense.  He told me that it was in fact true, that his friend was just that good.   I tried to be as polite as possible because there’s no reason to get into a dick waving contest, especially at a Jimmy Buffet concert of all places.  The truth of the matter is, his friend is good, and is probably in the top .01% of all people that have played online poker.   It’s just funny that he happened to run into probably the only guy at the whole concert who wouldn’t be floored by a 50 or 60k win.

Anyway, I’m in the process of moving out of my condo.  I’m moving to Lincoln Park to live with 3 of my college friends plus 1 random friend of a friend.  I think it should be a lot of fun and as soon as I finalize renting my current place out I will move my stuff over.  I’m looking to get a new mattress and I’m probably going to go with a Tempurpedic or the “Dream Bed” from some hotel that I’ve heard good things about.  If anyone has input, or even better, a place in Chicago where I can get this bed that would be great.  I’m not looking to pay full price, or even really close to it, as all of the research I’ve done tells me that you generally can haggle the hell out of the mattress places.  So if you own a mattress place or know someone that does, we can cut the crap and just give me the best price and I’ll give you my business and a shout in my blog when your awesome mattress inevitably improves my sleep!

Good luck,
Taylor

ironic, i do have a very good friend that owns a mattress factory. in fact, if youve ever bought a futon, chances are they made it. im not sure if they deal direct to chicago. mattress discounts are worthless unless the factory is within driving distance. youd prob end up losing \$ on the shipping otherwise. if you can find one of their mattresses online id HIGHLY recommend it.

Hey taylor, i always read your blog, but I have one request.. Can u stop mentioning how like \$50k or whatever means nothing to you? You seem like a really cool down to earth guy, but stuff like this distances you from your readers.. But, if you wanna ship me \$50k, I have no problem with that :) .

southerndog

Jul 24, 08 08:55:54

50k does mean a lot to me

i wrote here that i wouldn't be floored by a poker win of 50 or 60k. i think most people in society would think that is just shocking. i am well aware of how much money it is (look at me on here trying to get a discount on a 2k matress....), it's just not an amount that would totally awe me as far as poker winnings go. the truth is i have been playing high stakes poker for 3+ years now so i'm just a little immune to some of the numbers people toss around.

if he had walked up and said he won 500k in one day then 600k the next day....i'd be a little floored, thats for sure!

I'm back in Chicago and it feels nice.  What doesn't feel nice is being up this early.  I'm heading into the office to get back to work.  It's very hard to get on a routine in Vegas, so I'm happy that I should be able to be on a good one now.

I just wanted to say a quick good luck to my friends that are still in the Main Event.  If my roommate Joe or Bruce gets deep today/tomorrow, I'll likely fly back out to sweat them.  Props to my other roommate Drama for cashing, it was particularly impressive because I don't think his stack was ever over 60 or 70k, and he lost a 100k pot with KK vs 109o all in preflop.

GL to: Joe, Bruce, David, Kara, Justin, Phil, Leo, anyone else i'm forgetting just glancing at the list of ppl still in.  I sure hope i get to go back out to Vegas to sweat someone really deep!
