What's Your Edge

Taylor Caby: Poker Blog

you're a good guy, but I'm tired of seeing your Mug everytime I look at PokerNews for live updates.  seeing as you just won an event (congrats, btw) and every poker player in the world has your face burned into their retinas, i see sponsorship dollars in your future!!  http://www.pokernews.com/live-reporting/

i'm spending the day working today, i grabbed a hotel room last night and got a good night sleep and have had some peace and quiet all day to get some stuff done.  i think i am headed back to chicago tomorrow, but i haven't totally decided.  i still have 2 roommates in the main event, and i'd like to stay and support them, but at the same time i already have a ticket and have a ton of stuff going on.  tentatively i am going to leave tomorrow afternoon, and then come back Friday night if anyone is still in the tourney.

i can't wait to get into our new office in Chicago, which I think is an absolutely perfect space for us.  it is the perfect combination of spatious but not wasteful, and nice but not too expensive.  we needed an upgrade as we were basically all working out of one small room before.  i'll have some updates on my poker playing and some thoughts about online poker in general when i get home.

gl to everyone still in the tourney,

taylor

Yeterday's tournament was one of those days where nothing good ever happened.  Every time I had a hand, someone had a better hand, everytime I made a move, someone had a huge hand.

My table was much more solid than any other Main Event table I've ever had, including last year when I was down to almost the final 1000 people near the end of Day 2 (when theoretically the average player should be much stronger than the beginning of day 1).  I'm not sure if I just got unlucky and had a bad table draw, or if the fields really are gettng that much tougher.  I think it's probably a little of both.

That being said, my table was by no means really hard, as I suspect there was 1 very good player (young euro), 2-3 solid americans who were likely online MTT grinders, and then some older guys who were mostly nitty, but except for one of them, not clueless.

I put three of my friends into the Main Event and they all are left after Day 1, so I can't be too unhappy.  One of them has 75k so he's got a great chance to do some damage.  Good luck to everyone still left in the Main Event.

Today I have a meeting at the Rio in an hour, then I'm going to check out the Gaming LIfe Expo (which is basically a ton of gambling related booths), then head home to shower/change before I head to Krantz's place for a 4th of July party.  I think we might stop by Phil Gordon's 4th of July Party too but it's kind of far away and I didn't know a ton of people there so it's probably up in the air (was a lovely party, though).

I hope all of you Americans enjoy the 4th of July.  You can expect some actual poker content (GASP) from this blog soon.  I have a few articles I want to write and I think i'll just link them up here.

honestly i dont see how taylor stakes someone like ezra galvston who plays tourneys for like once a year..... but doesn't even approach me... a kid whose sacrificed his life to play poker under taylor's stake and has profited him nearly 30,000 dollars. it really frustrates me. it's his decision i guess but it really hurts me on the inside :( i would have glady free-rolled myself for only 20% of my action. to each their own i guess. taylor is prolly saying, "well he could have easily lost under my stake!"...... well in that case i wouldn't be bitching at all about not having an oppurtunity like this..... i would feel sad/mellow/depressed. but i thought i did very well under his stake..... and in return i basically got a big fuck you!

Jul 6, 08 02:13:12

taylor,.... i could have ripped you off for THOUSANDS easily!!!!!!....... but guess what? i DIDN"T!!!!!!!...... i didn't because i'm a very honest trustworthy person. but i'm just saying i could have...... but i didn't.......... you don't respect that....... just know that in the future if you keep cash game stakes up there's going to be kids who are going to fuck you over........ believe me I've heard poker talk the past 1 years and everyone is like...... "omg how didn't you take like X amount and just say you made X amount?"........ "why would you be that honest?"........... just remember that the honesty i provided doesn't come around for everyone...... i just wanted you to know this. i was very very honest under our stake and counted our stake figures down to the very penny. i appreciate your genoristy........ but not your forward modesty........... i am sometimes a dickhead afterwards...... but want u to know that i'm a good person in general...... and i think u should feel sad about staking 3 people for main event but not even appproacing me.

I'm really sorry about the lack of updates.  I'll have some good stuff soon, I promise.  For those of you that haven't seen Andrew Wiggins Pokernews interview, it's probably the best I've ever seen.  Check it out:

First I wanted to say congrats to my friend Phil Galfond for taking home the 5k PLO w/rebuys gold bracelet.  That's a great accomplishment and it couldn't happen to a nicer guy.  When I bumped into Phil my first day in Vegas this summer we talked a bit about the tourneys we planned to play.  I remember him saying that he was playing a lot of of tourneys this summer, and that he really wanted to get a bracelet.  It's funny, because when he said that, I thought to myself, "damn, I do too."  Well, good for Phil, now he has a Gold Bracelet.

On the topic of Gold Bracelets, I really want to win one someday.  When I'm done with poker in X number of years, I'm going to have some very fond memories.  It's truly been a wild ride up to this point, but the thing is, there aren't a ton of memorable personal achievements I've had.

Since I don't play tournaments, I haven't had any very huge scores or obviously memorable times in my life.  I guess I have a few memories that come to mind:

-Winning my first 20k.  I've always been obsessed with setting money related goals.  When I was a little kid I would always have a saving goal, I don't know why.  Sometime before my freshman year of college, I told my mom my goal was to graduate college with 20k to my name.  She laughed at me and said she'd feel happy for me if I wasn't in debt when I graduated college.  When I won my first 20k sometime in early 2004, I felt on top of the world!

-Going to Aruba/Foxwoods in 2004.  I was fresh off my first summer playing poker, and everything was new and cool still.  I had just turned 21 and I was the youngest kid playing high stakes at the time (25/50).  It was such a cool feeling to just randomly be in Aruba or Connecticut playing in high stakes tourneys.

-Hedge fund game.  The first time I played in the NYC hedge fund game was really eye opening to me.  Here I was, thinking I was hot stuff for making XYZ money at the time being only 21 years old, then I realized that these guys wouldn't blink if my net worth fell out of their pocket.  I just remember wishing I could be in their shoes someday, I can still dream :)

-Launching CardRunners.  It was a great feeling when Andrew and I got the site live in August of 2005.  It was a nice day in Champaign and I remember walking back to my apartment feeling really proud.

These are some of my produst memories from poker.  I'm actually going to write a 5 year online poker anniversary post at some point this summer, but I'd love to cap off this list with a bracelet.  You see, it's nice to remember winning money or traveling places, but those are just the benefits of playing poker successfully.  It'd be nice to tell my kids someday "yeah, I played poker professionally for some time, I even won a gold bracelet!"  I'm going to play a few more events this summer for sure, so hopefully I'll run hot and win one.

Good luck,

Taylor

PS - Twitter is now setup on my phone, so my updates there will come straight into this blog.  Let me know if you think it sucks, I'll stop doing it.
